Hi, I’m Annie and I’ve studied at the Manchester School of Architecture since undergrad.
I am currently in USE and enjoy the creativity that this Atelier encourages.
I spent 2 years in practice before returning to my Masters which helped build my communication skills and confidence using programs such as Revit.
I have a keen interest in Modernist Architecture and enjoy a bit of printmaking when I’m not studying.

Activities and Skills

The creative aspect of our project will give the opportunity to the students to develop and present design ideas to the team and our collaborator. This will allow them to evolve their collaborative, technical and personal skills.

Specifically, the development of knowledge of digital software such as these of Adobe suite, AutoCAD and Revit will help the team to create an exciting design proposal, based on coherent research and that will be presented in a good manner. This will be achieved through small workshops that will be organized in the future and that will assist the students to acquire more knowledge on how to use the above software.

In this project we will focus on developing research skills, graphic design, mapping exercise and utilising design software including the use of QR code. By imagining new possibilities around Albert Square and Manchester Town Hall, we will adopt strategies for research and representation by using mixed media to convey spatial arrangement, connect physical and digital infrastructure and enhance visitors’ experience. There will be series of workshops conducted by our dedicated team members to ensure everyone is catered and looked after as a team. We appreciate knowledge and skills exchange and believe everyone has something to contribute!

Social value is a key driver within this community based project. The objectives for our event aim to design a potting shed which can be universal and used in many similar parks to Beech Field Road across the country. The shed should act as a public intervention which provides shelter, growing space, uses passive strategies, and most importantly provides social engagement.

This project is a wonderful opportunity to explore new and exciting ways to engage passers by as well as the existing community. The Friends of Beech Field road are excited about the prospect of receiving a proposal for the new potting shed which they would be proud to own in their park.

Elliot Flynn

Hey, I’m Elliot. I’m a 5th year student at Manchester School of Architecture – where I also studied for my BA. I’m currently in USE, designing with a focus on the stories that buildings tell during their lifetime – investigating in particular how architects can design with respect for a building’s past, and do so sustainably. I love drawing and have worked as illustrator for several small publications; I feel the utility of hand-drawing is unparalleled in the industry and I can’t wait to share this idea with a wider network of students.

ACTIVITIES:

The two week project will be split into two main acitivites, in the first week the participants will focus on research and design of the shed. There will be four groups focusing on different aspects of the shed and its functionality, these will rotate each day so everyone will have the opportunity to partake in each group. After finalising these ideas, in the second week the participants with focus on model making and experimentation with materiality, including some detailing. At the end, we will collate and produce a guide for a potting shed containing all the work produced.

SKILLS:

Model making, producing technical details, hand drawing, building design, researching, site analysis and community work.

ownHaus Skills

In the view of evolving ideas together, we aim to grow our knowledge along with our group peers. The emerging ownHaus concept will evolve from a wide range of competencies and will help you acquire collaborative, technical and personal development skills such as:

Design Expression

Developing a design concept involves good technical competencies and within our group you will take your 2D & 3D modelling skills to the next level. You will employ a range of technical software in finding architectural solutions with the help of models and drawings, acquiring knowledge and confidence using AutoCAD and Sketchup.

Researching and Critical Thinking

Carrying out group work will enable your awareness within the real-estate industry and develop your analysing, conceptualising and synthesizing skills. Undertaking project studies will enrich your research management and deepen your understanding of the multidisciplinary subjects you will get involved with, expanding both your personal and professional development.

Presentation and Communication

Our project will evolve your graphic skills with regards to collaging, presenting and creating infographics in communicating your ideas efficiently. Graphic communication programs such as Adobe Creative Suite help you express your vision and contribute towards achieving your creative potential. Co-operation is also key, therefore you will most likely become more receptive to feedback and work more proactively within a group.

Creativity

Whilst working in this team, we aim to boost your creativity levels through informal talks and sharing culture. Through sharing new-found knowledge and skills with colleagues, we aim to create an open environment to help you generate new ideas. Peer-to-peer feedback is key as it will bring new perspectives to yet another inspiring mind.

Social agenda?

We want to unite the local community and eliminate social segregation through the use of food.

Our primary aim is to design a community food hub and activities centre for residents of Hulme and Moss side to provide covid safe interactions.

What will you do?

During the MSA live event you will help us to build a virtual community forum where members of the Work House Project and the community of Hulme and Moss Side will come together to learn more about food. You will have the opportunity to partake in live events such as cooking skills, talks from external collaborators and conversations with members of the community.

A ‘self build project’ the end goal is to design a food and activities hub. Working closely with this diverse community-the design of the hub will be tailored to benefit the needs identified through social mapping and collaboration exercises.

Activities & Skills:
Our key objective is to develop a series of concept designs. These concept designs will be of mobile pod structures that aim to catch the imagination & creativity of the children. The pods should be interactive and facilitate all ages as they will be used by the whole community.

Through an online workshop environment, we will invite undergraduate students to join us and work together in small groups. In our group, students will learn essential skills that will benefit and further their studies.
We will start off by brainstorming ideas for the design of the pods followed by an activity where we will attempt to think in the mind of a child: how they interact with space and materials. We will then start to develop, design & test concepts for the pods and create various diagrams and collages.

To achieve this, various computer software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, InDesign and Photoshop will be employed (a series of workshops for the students to learn how to use the above mentioned software will be provided). Furthermore, Handmade models and sketches will also be encouraged to produce a series of mix media ideas and concepts.

Social Value:
The community is at the heart of this project! TASC explores how children interact with the built environment through play. By designing a mobile pod that facilitates play and activities, this project enables a space that encourages engagement and learning for both children and larger communities. As a team, we will explore the mind of a child and propose concept designs for the pod, which could potentially be developed and built in the future. We aim to design a pod that will inspire children to explore, learn, and engage with the world around them.

This live project will also enable the BA and MLA students to learn how to design for play and create spaces that engage children. They will also upskill by attending various workshops contributing to their future progression in architecture.

With the significant social and industrial importance of the site, the Tetley has been acting as a cultural hub for exploration and social interaction. Over 120,000 people visit the Tetley every year and we strongly believe every person deserves to explore their cultural potential and has access to creative learning regardless of their background and generation.

Rethinking the use of space of the Tetley’s ground floor means enhancing and creating a more flexible, creative and contemporary environment, for the community to experience art, culture and the brewery history of the Tetley. Better spatial quality and arrangement of the ground floor provides opportunities to support more emerging artists, a platform for holding a variety of free exhibitions, family art workshops and local events.

This project also aims at increasing the revenue that goes to the charity, Project Space Leeds by incorporating the bar, restaurant and shop area and by creating a sociable place of leisure and relaxation that improve the quality of life of the community.

We will rely on sketching, physical model making and digital design to aid us throughout the design process. We will also look to improve skills in analytical research, presentation, use of the Adobe package (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), and 3D Software (Sketchup, Revit, Rhino).

The core agenda of our project is to create a network of MSA alumni facilitating discussions and a sense of community.

We aim to organize workshops to develop and learn skills to prepare ourselves for a post-academic adventure while creating opportunities to connect to various esteemed alumni of the school.

Workshops on Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator, as well as soft skills like networking, communication and public speaking will be held. Presentations will be conducted to learn how to present ourselves in the digital as well as the real world.

Grizedale Arts are an arts organisation based in the Lake District who believe in using art as a catalyst for social change. They work with artists from many different backgrounds, and host artist residents from all over the world, as well as connecting with the villages on their doorstep.

They plan to return the historic Farmer’s Arms on the edge of the Lake District National Park to its place at the heart of the community. They have previously restored Lawson Park, Low Parkamoor, and the Coniston Institute, so they have successfully completed community focussed building projects before.

In response to local concern and in collaboration with them, Grizedale Arts is leading the initiative to transform the inn to a hybrid community hub. Offering open access to the arts and new routes to collaborative thinking and exchange, an inclusive offer will reinvigorate its heritage as a gateway between the local communities and the wider world. With creative thinking and opportunities for learning/participation underpinning how the experience is delivered, it will be a place to learn from each other, to develop solutions to shared concerns and to grow and fulfil new ambitions.

Activities and Skills: The two weeks will be divided between skill building, fostering social connections, and digging into the oftentimes unspoken value of architectural heritage. Our aim is to create an environment that will facilitate learning through hands-on work with different softwares where the starting point is each team-member’s skills and experience.

The first week will focus on creating content for the final product (an online exhibition) by working with Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, 3D modelling software – such as Sketchup and Rhino- and open-source video creation software. We will offer insights into the best uses for each program (photo-editing, layout design, 3D modelling or vectorial work) and tips and tricks to improve workflows that we’ve learnt over the years. There will be two guest talks: one focusing on website design and online exhibition curation, while the other – offered by our collaborators – will offer an overview of the value and history of post-war industrial architecture– specifically, power stations and coal mines.

The second week will be mainly dedicated to building the online exhibition and making it an interactive and engaging experience for future users. At this point, the historical significance that has shaped this project and its wider social value will become ever more evident. The final site will be a platform for school children to learn through interactive experiences about the legacy of these architectures. There is potential for a “virtual school trip”, where the success of the project will be visible through its live-testing and reception by school children and their teachers.

Activities and Skills in the project:
Our project will outline an in-depth process for app design. Students will learn how a storyboard works and learn the types of graphics that can be used within them. We will then go into how this finished design will be made into a working app through coding practices by developers.

People joining our group can expect talks from leading members of Lifeshare and affiliated organisations through the Manchester Digital Collective. The Manchester Digital Collective encompasses a range of professionals, from artists to musicians who all contribute to Lifeshare’s goals in one way or another.

Throughout the project students will be making heavy use of programs that develop graphics such as photoshop and illustrator. Whilst it is not required that students come to this project as experts in these software programmes, it would be beneficial if students had at least a basic understanding of the interface; some of the tools that can be used within them and what they can be used to produce.

MSA Connect has very defined social ethos. As the university is praised for its reputation, for the variety, vitality and achievements of its students, reflected in appraisals by professional institutions, prizes gained externally and successes of its alumni, we are aiming to develop a project that has its foundations on community, networking, inclusion and opportunity. With this values, going forward we want to establish a place for networking between students, alumni and their connections.
