Discussion with Ross and Lisa @ Life Leisure

31/01/24. After the site visit, we sat down with Ross and Lisa in the Life Leisure Centre to discuss their goals and aspirations for the project. A fun fact about this Leisure Centre is that since the moment it opened it has had an “abnormal” behaviour because it is always used by different members of the community. During the discussion we all concluded that the objective of this project is simple, we need to encourage the community to be more active and our job is to come up with ways to do so. We discussed the audio walks and how that could happen, and we came up with the idea of maybe creating a point system to encourage people to make the walks. The site visit and this meeting gave us a starting point for the project, we can now start actively thinking about the possibilities for Brinnington.

First Site Visit

On the 31st of January, the BAM! team went to Brinnington for our first site visit. We were taken around by the amazing client representatives Ross and Lisa, seeing what the potential threats and opportunities for an intervention. Brinnington had an incredible history and a tight-knit community, where their opinions and needs helped shape the direction of our project.

Through the walk, we spoke about many aspects that could lead to an intervention including signage, fitness and health, digital identity and access to green spaces.

I'm from Belfast and have spent the past 2 years working in Manchester for TODD Architects. I studied my undergrad back home at Queen's University Belfast but decided to move across the water to try something new.

I'm an MArch student and part of the Flux atelier which investigates how play can re-imagine our cities. It's been really interesting to explore different elements of play with some experimental lab work and free thinking. Hopefully some of it can translate into the conceptual stages for Stitching Nelsons Spirit!

I am from China. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Architecture (RIBA Part 1) at the University of Bath, followed by work experience as an architectural assistant. I am currently pursuing a Master of Architecture degree at the MSA as a member of the CPU Atelier.

I am proficient in AutoCAD, Rhino & Grasshopper, Sketchup, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and rendering software like Vray and Enscape. It is my first time working on an urban redevelopment project that involves cultural heritage. I am excited to work with my teammates and to see the final outcome of our collaborative efforts.

Hello, I’m Zahra!

My journey into design and architecture started with two years of interior design in my home country ‘Saudi Arabia’, followed by a foundation year and first year of architecture at Dublin School of Architecture in Ireland, and finally completing my RIBA Part 1 in architecture at the Manchester School of Architecture.

After graduating, I worked as a part 1 architectural assistant at a small-scale practice based in London where I was very lucky to be part of an ambitious team and engage in many heritage and community-related projects that match my interests in architecture.

I am excited about being part of a project that is in ‘the City of Culture’ Bradford and engaging in the Bradford Culture Connection project, as well as having the opportunity to participate in making a positive change in Bradford’s community.

As a graduate of CTY at BA level, I have long had an interest in heritage. I believe that high quality existing buildings are the biggest asset to interventions in any built environment.

Site Visit

Our team had the opportunity to visit the project site situated in the bustling city center of Manchester, right at the Manchester Town Hall. The architectural marvel of the town hall captivated our entire group. As we explored the area allocated for our live project, Anthony, along with another member of the city council, guided us through the space. Their insights not only enhanced our understanding of the location but also enriched our experience with a comprehensive tour of the entire town hall. It was truly a remarkable opportunity for us to explore the historic Town Hall and delve into its detailed history.

I am from India. I hold a bachelor's degree in Architecture from the University of Pune. Following my undergraduate studies, I gained valuable experience as an architecture design intern and later as a self-practicing architect, completing several residential projects. I am pursuing an MA in Architecture + Adaptive Reuse as my master's course. This enriching experience has allowed me to investigate strategies for adaptive reuse - strategies that are not applied as a reaction to current conditions but in anticipation of future changes. Our First Team Meeting:

Our team had first meeting on 5th February, which served as an icebreaker to get to know each other better. During the session, we engaged in lively conversations and shared our individual ideas for designing the required Townhall function on the site. We brainstormed, created rough sketches on paper, and outlined the initial concept for our poster.

As the meeting wrapped up, we assigned specific roles to us and established a general work plan for the upcoming weeks, outlining timelines for each task and identifying weekly deliverables.

Born and raised in North Wales, my journey has led me to the city of Manchester, where I'm doing Master of Architecture. My toolkit includes a foundation in SketchUp, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, and a collection of render engines. I try to complement this by growing my expertise in Rhino and Grasshopper. My passion for architecture has been fuelled by travels through Europe and Southeast Asia, where I've absorbed and witnessed a range of design philosophies and construction techniques.

I enjoy connecting with people at industry events, always eager to exchange ideas and expand my architectural knowledge. I also currently lead the MSSA Architecture Football Society, some of you may have met me there.

After working as an Architectural Assistant for Donald Insall Associates in London, I have returned to Continuity in Architecture. I have a good understanding of the architectural concepts of reinvention and cultural heritage from my year in London. However, I want to emphasize how Bradford's Cultural Connection project is artistic and creative. What's Next for Our Project:

After our informing meeting with Sue Mackay, we're all exited for the next steps in our journey. We are planning to visit the centre very soon. This visit isn't just a chance to see the space; it's an opportunity to dive deeper into our project. We plan to capture every moment, from videos and photos to sketches, ensuring we have a rich collection of materials to share during the action weeks.

We’re also fine-tuning the schedule for our action weeks. We're putting together a lineup of activities, workshops, and brainstorming sessions designed to maximize our productivity and creativity. And, of course, we're buzzing with excitement at the thought of meeting our full group in person. The chance to collaborate, share ideas, and embark on this creative journey together is what we've been looking forward to.

We can't wait to start this creative adventure with everyone, bringing our ideas to life and making a meaningful contribution to the Florence Arts Centre. Let's make these two weeks unforgettable!

Meeting 3:

In our third meeting, we had the wonderful opportunity to meet with Sue Mackay, the director of the centre, in person for the first time. This meeting was a significant milestone for our project, as it allowed us to connect directly with the heart of the gallery. Sue presented an insightful overview of the gallery, introducing its core values, history, and the impact she hopes our project will have. Her presentation was not only informative but also truly inspiring, setting a clear vision for what we are working towards.

Following Sue's introduction, we had the chance to share our ideas and the progress we've made so far. This exchange was incredibly beneficial, as it provided us with direct feedback from the very person who knows the gallery inside and out.

On the 5th of February we met Sam Sin and Amanda Aitken at Gorton Central to visit the site. Amanda Aitken is our new contact for the project, and we were excited to meet her for the first time. We took a walk around the garden while talking to our collaborators about their aspirations for the space, its accessibility and how to improve the experience of the community members while using the proposed spaces. It became clear to us that multiple areas need improvement, and we will have to work on multiple sections in this project: a patio, a multi-purpose room, the garden area and the Yellow Brick Road.
The meeting went by very fast while exchanging ideas and we cannot wait to be back in spring with a full team!

It was a pleasure to meet Sam Sin on the 6th of December at Manchester Technology Centre to talk more about Gorton and its community.
HMHC operates a community center (Gorton Central) alongside an award-winning community garden in Gorton and Abbey, East Manchester. Their focus lies within the underprivileged neighborhoods, aiming to improve health outcomes for local residents. The team aims to expand participation in well-being activities within the currently fenced community garden, enhancing its accessibility and utilization for a wider audience. Additionally, they plan to adopt a section of the 'Yellow Brick Road' (YBR), transforming it into a safer and more enjoyable space while preserving its historical significance as a former canal. Manchester City Council's scheduled safety improvements for the YBR prompt community involvement in maintenance efforts, with HMHC committing to oversee the nearest section to the community center and seeking innovative ways to develop it further.

I received my Part 1 (Bachelor's in Architecture) from Pune, India. I've also taken a couple online courses on Sustainable Design and Bio-Integrated Design. I've also worked with Amit Bhatt Architects, a well-known architecture practice in Pune, and The Design Gesture, an architectural writing firm. The group had a meeting on the 15 of February to discuss the design concept and the required outputs. In this meeting we discussed the site visit we had last week and started drawing some initial sketches, we had a talk about the materials we are thinking of using, we also considered reflecting the historical aspect of textile industry in Nelson on our design and we have an idea on how to incorporate that in the design, which will be taken further throughout the design process.

Meeting 2:

One of the highlights of our second meeting was the brainstorming session for our project poster. We discussed various concepts that could capture the essence of our project, aiming to communicate our vision clearly and attractively. Ideas ranged from incorporating elements of the mine’s industrial heritage to showcasing the potential transformations we envision for the entrance space.

Each of us came back supplied with new information and ideas sparked by our individual explorations and reflections since our first meeting. Whether it was sustainable material options, or community engagement strategies, it was helpful to share these findings with each other.

Given the delay in our site visit, we chose to move forward, by using the information already at our disposal. We worked on how to structure our action weeks to truly reflect the spirit of the art gallery, ensuring maximal creative freedom for everyone involved.

I am an architecture master's student [SKN atelier] who studied their undergraduate course at the University of Bath.

During my two years out and university placement year I have accumulated experience on projects of various scales. Most recently, I have been a Part 1 Architectural Assistant at Leslie Jones in London. This included working on the Birmingham HS2 project and Pittsburgh Airport.

I have also had experience as a Junior Interior Designer at Perkins&Will, as well as mixed-used architecture work here and there for care homes, commercial and residential projects.

Meeting 1:

It was great to kick off our project with the first meeting where we all got to introduce ourselves and dive into our aspirations and plans for the Florence Arts Centre project.

We all shared a bit about why we’re drawn to this project, and it was inspiring to hear the range of interests across the group. We discussed how we’ll share the workload, seeking to support tasks with our individual skills and interests for maximum efficiency and enjoyment.

Our immediate next step is to start exploring ideas we discussed further and looking for ways of possible site visit, as the location of our site is a bit far from Manchester. Each of us delved into our assigned areas, gathering information and inspiration to share at our next meeting, to help us refine our concepts.

Client and Site Overview:

Located in the heart of West Cumbria, the Florence Arts Centre is a keystone of cultural and artistic effort, standing nearby to the historic Florence Mine. As a Grade II Listed site recognized by Historic England, the mine is celebrated as one of the nation’s most whole examples of an iron mining pit head, capturing a valuable history of England's industrial past. The closure of Florence Mine echoes extensive historical changes in mining and steel production, marking an evolution from industrial powerhouse to cultural space.

Today, the Arts Centre blossoms as a radiant hub for creativity and community engagement, housing a gallery, performance spaces, and artist studios. The Centre not only supports local artists through its commitment to sustainable creative practices but also actively involves the community through workshops and educational programs. Unique to this site, two full-time paint makers utilize the historically mined iron ore to create paints, pastels, and inks, intertwining the legacy of the mine with contemporary artistic practice.

The Trafford Music Service provides opportunity for children across Trafford to learn how to play music, whether that be orchestral or popular. The Service teaches more than 1000 children, with 400 more on the waiting list. That, as well as 1000’s of instruments, means the Service is starting to outgrow its home.

The Service is excited to work with the MSA to develop a scheme that can support their success. This LIVE group will have the opportunity to visit the home of the Service, the Claremont Centre, and work collaboratively to create a scheme for practice and storage spaces, while developing skills through physical model-making and digital software.

In preparation to the live project, we have been to visit the site and the client to better understand the spaces we will be working in. You will get to visit these spaces as previously mentioned but this is just a preview to some of the spaces you will be designing!

ARCHITECTURAL JOURNEY: My passion for architecture was kindled in the vibrant city of Chengdu, where I was born. This passion led me to Hunan University of Science and Technology for my undergraduate studies, where I immersed myself in the world of architectural design and theory. My academic pursuits continued at Sheffield Hallam University, where I earned my Bachelor of Architecture degree. Currently, I am enriching my expertise at the Manchester School of Architecture, working towards a Master of Architecture degree with an expected graduation date of August 2025.

ACADEMIC ENDEAVORS: As a member of the Complexity, Planning & Urbanism(CPU) atelier group, my focus has been on harnessing computer algorithms to generate spatial logic, aiming for the most efficient architectural solutions. My studio project revolves around the new Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) building, where my goal is to create an architectural space that fosters limitless communication possibilities. My dissertation probes into the question of whether capitalism has commandeered architectural modernism and styles, suggesting that architecture may serve the market interests of capitalists rather than the needs of its users.

PART 1 EXPERIENCE: The transition between my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees was marked by a significant opportunity to delve into practical experience. I participated in the 4th Architecture Festival at Hunan University of Science and Technology, where I showcased my ability to conceptualize and materialize ideas through my pavilion model submission. This experience was pivotal in refining my design skills and understanding of architectural nuances.

SPARE TIME: My spare time is filled with a passion for architectural design and exploration. I am proficient in using modeling software such as Rhino and Grasshopper, which not only enhances my design capabilities but also allows me to realize more precise and innovative architectural concepts. At the same time, I enrich my portfolio using graphic design software like Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, creating visually compelling design presentations. Beyond honing technical skills, I enjoy exploring new places, experimenting with new recipes, and capturing life’s beautiful moments through photography. I am a movie buff, always looking forward to the next good film, and nothing is more precious than quality time spent with family and friends.

Hey there!

I am Raagav from the down south of India. Pursuing my first year in Master of Architecture with Continuity atelier. I completed my Undergrad from Manipal School of Architecture, India.

My design approach deals with contemporary style of architecture with a modern brutalist touch that concentrates on lighting and functionalities. I'm also into conservation where I unequivocally believe that history propels originators like me to design something new for society and convenient to the community.

Stepping a bit away from Architecture, I enjoy cooking which makes me refresh and shoves me aside from the routine work and stress. Adding on to that sometimes I love clicking pictures, sketching and to jot down few words that are skeptically euphonic.

I am really counting my days to have maximum fun on the workshop with the children and to guide and learn what’s on the minds of the little future architects that’s going to emerge in real as models and drawings.

PART 1 EXPERIECE: In my first year of practice, I analyzed and studied a piece of public land in Sheffield together with my team members. In order to meet the needs of customers, I committed to transforming an abandoned house. Currently I hope to give it the function of a tea room, so as to make it full of vitality again and drive the surrounding economy.

ARCHITECTURAL INTERESTS: At the moment most of my interests join forces with my university projects, for my studio project I'm exploring the intersection of feminism and architecture, aiming to design spaces that meet community needs through an inclusive lens. I am also writing my dissertation, which delves into the influence of freedom and media on architecture in my country, Azerbaijan.

PART 1 EXPERIENCE: Between my Bachelor's and Master's, I snagged an amazing chance to work at one of the biggest architectural firms in my hometown Baku, Azerbaijan. I got to work on some important projects, including designing the headquarters for a major government organization in my country. Besides the big projects, I also got my hands on smaller ones, which was great for picking up a mix of skills.

SPARE TIME: In my spare time, I'm all about exploring new places, experimenting in cooking up some new recipes, and capturing moments through photography. I'm a big movie fan, always up for a good film, and nothing beats quality time with my loved ones.

Architectural Interests:
For me, architecture is about the experience of space. How do we interact with the spaces we inhabit? How does it make us feel? What emotions does it evoke? Can we design to accommodate for certain sensory interactions?
I am passionate about understanding space through phenomenology and sensory patterns, which I am currently exploring through my dissertation on how we, as students, adapt our temporary environments to call them a 'home'. It is the connection we make and maintain with our space that is truly fascinating to me and my future work will reflect on, and explore, the intimacies of design.

Part 1 Experience:
I worked at a medium sized practice with a focus on delivering sustainable and experiential architecture. I was able to bring my creative input to the practice, developing handmade 3D concept models and implementing my Photoshop and sketching capabilities to win competitions!

Spare Time:
Besides twirling the moustache, I enjoy film photography, hiking or running in rain or shine, indulging myself in coffee and pastries and when I have the time, I enjoy sketching and working on large art pieces.

Apart from my academics, I've always liked indulging myself in travelling, sketching, and watching anime. Traveling allows me to discover new things and inspires me, which enhances my creativity. Also, I love to meet new people and experience new fashion, food and smells at local retail shops and markets.

Hi Guys, I’m Jemy from the CPU Atelier!

After graduating B.Arch. from India, I worked as an architectural assistant in a construction firm in Saudi for more than two years. The world has seemed strikingly different since I fell in love with architecture. I believe, admiring architecture is indisputably divergent from being enamoured of it. When building an aesthetically and functionally significant design, one is transforming an individual's visualization into reality, which is enormous. I am interested in how we can combine the cinematic world with architecture and especially all things stage/set design. Before coming to Manchester for my masters I studied in Ukraine, Lithuania and Italy, after graduation I also worked in Switzerland. I find it fascinating how many different approaches exist in architecture, and how it can transform spaces and life of people by itself. Being an architect to me means having this ability to change and shape lives in the material world which we build. Working with our collaborators in the Height Public Hall is a great opportunity to see how the space can unite people, create new ties and transform the community.

Our first visit to Alder Grange School!

On 26/02 Monday, our team visited Alder Grange to showcase the different roles involved in running projects by presenting one project from our year out in practice.

This included an insight to the variety of roles architecture can involve such as a structural consultant, MEP consultant, landscape architect, interior designer, furniture designer and so on. This helped them in realising the abundance of opportunities that the construction industry has to offer.

Here's hoping we inspired few young minds!
