Second day of events and we have just finished the first part of our tour around Manchester! Starting from the university campus, we via Oxford Road to Castlefield, past the canals and lock where the only detached house in Manchester is still standing. In the background the Beetham tower signals Manchester's changing urban landscape, which is something we want to explore further as a topic for the installation. We also walked past places such as Granada Studios and the old roman ruins of Mancunium. Along the way we observed changes within the urban fabric, and also the weather with everything from snow to sunshine!

Overall, Day 1 of Group 08 went well!
Posted 21 Mar 2017 02:19
Some of the group members presenting their personal interpretations based on the combined sketches during Sketch Jam!
Posted 21 Mar 2017 02:17
One of the challenge was to draw portraiture of some of the group members by applying the technique of blind contour drawing. This was done by one single continuous line (without lifting up the pen) and also without looking at the drawing! It was more challenging when we were given less than a minute to create a portrait!

Facts about blind contour drawing:
First, it improves hand-eye coordination. Hand-eye coordination is important in drawing for obvious reasons. Secondly, blind contour line drawing forces you to look at the object that you are drawing. Perhaps most importantly, it helps the artist to understand that representational drawing is all about observation. Without keen observation skills, the representational artist is lost.

Don't worry if you had similar silly sketches like this. Looking at what I have.. It seem absurd, right? All I can say is, practice makes perfect!
Posted 21 Mar 2017 01:16
Basic sketching demonstration and tutorials by our group member Raden. From simple line strokes to contour drawing, all to emphasize the idea of proper hand-eye coordination while sketching. More update to come!

Today we have analysed our proposed site for the interactive model in Strangeways, North Manchester. We have identified the interactive zone (hatch) & series of plots (yellow) to be designed and modelled individually to suit our future scenario. This approach allows all of the participants to work towards the final model collectively.
Posted 20 Mar 2017 20:00
In our event we propose to create an interactive 3D model of North Manchester. Based on our current ecological urbanism research in CPU atelier we create a speculative future scenario where natural environment has taken over the built form. We will explore this concept through our interactive model. Today we did a precedent study on similar post-apocalypitic environments.

Sketches of the day!
A compilation of students' sketches done for the ice breaking session.

So why is sketching so important?
- It is an initial way to spark creativity. Interesting concepts of design work always come from little sketches!
- It is an effective visual communication tool. Through rough sketches or just showing up your sketchbook, you can easily describe what you do and your creative process to your tutors or your future clients!
- It records time and place. Diary does not have to be written, it could be drawn!
