Events 2017

Everyone's designs are really starting to progress. Stalls are in mass production in preparation for Fridays show.

Today we have made a good start with assembling the installation on site, whilst some of us continued preparing origami modules in the studio.

Day 7:
During the afternoon, whilst half of the team were constructing, the other half were developing InDesign software skills, with mentors aiding with portfolio layout. The stencil of England '66 player, Geoff Hurst was printed and cut to use as a stencil tomorrow when jigsawing the boards.

The first framing module worked out perfectly as planned and tested, with L joints meeting nicely..two more frame modules to go!

Spare material was used to make temporary benches whilst joints within the timber joists were cut to shape. Everyone got involved and showed good teamwork while breaking a sweat to get all the larger framing pieces cut

Day 7:
Construction commenced as the sun shined! The team began the day in the courtyard measuring and cutting out structural framework using handsaws, chisels, and sand paper. Concentration faces all around..

Andrea sat on the end result of today's work. The first stool is almost ready, we'll get started on the next one in the morning!

Michael and Viktoria are working hard on their superb hammock chair. The white oak is proving tough to work with, being a hard wood, but we're getting there with it!

We chose what we thought would be a simplistic elegant design for the stool. It turns out it's quite complicated, the joint is called a tripod burr and is a bit of a puzzle. Here's a maquette we made to help keep track of where to cut on the real deal.

In afternoon we discussed about the initial ideas for exhibition and then split in 4 groups for working. Each group was assigned four different activities- Invitation poster, Video making, Introductory blog, designing the exhibition.

We went to the exhibition venue SpacePortX. We did site survey and measured the exhibition area for designing the layout for exhibition.

Day 7

Assembling today! almost finish the first 1:10 prototype wikihouse model.

Going back in time. The students presented their projects in front of Gareth and got some feedback on the buildability and the client's preferences. It was a success.

Calm before the storm in B15 this morning. Lots of furniture to be made today with two events groups filling it out.

Day 6: Started the day with an induction to use the courtyard. Everyone needs to remember to bring steel toe capped boots, gloves and eye protection to use the courtyard.

Day 5: Using the materials from we received from Emerge yesterday, we are testing design ideas. Great to see we are finally starting construction!

The group worked hard all day Monday to create half the origamis needed for the installation. We played around with scale of the components which varied from A4 (paper) sizes up to A1.

The origamis were designed so it was possible to easily attach them together to create variation of forms. After experimentation it was decided that the optimum shape required 3 origamis per cluster.

Being the coordinator of the event didn’t stop us from participating in most of the sketching activities!

Day 04 was another outdoor urban sketching session within Manchester city. The sketching sessions took place at Manchester Central Library, Albert Square and also the Manchester City Council Building.

They were given approximately 45 minutes to stop and sketch within the particular areas. When the given time has ended, group members gathered and walked together to the next point.

At the end of each session, everyone will gathered all lay down all the drawings together for a quick show and tell and photo-taking.

Group member enjoyed sketching outdoor while some others chose to sketch the interiors of Manchester Central Library.

One of the group members, Hamish, creates a model consisting of lollipop sticks to envisage a triangular base for foldable easels.

The group split into three larger groups as they find out there will be a competition and judging panel of Mustard Tree and OMI Architects on the second friday of the Events period.

The group chats as they finish for the day following a long discussion about each of their design ideas and the next stage of developing these further by rearranging everybody into three larger groups.

The group were split into pairs and asked to work through the ideas that they had, whilst also encouraging them to draw and illustrate these thoughts in their own style.

Day 6:

The team worked very hard in the afternoon to resolve technical and physical issues that were identified earlier on in the day. Following a lot of sketching, modelling and problem solving the final solution and plan for tomorrow’s workshop day was discussed with the whole group.

The group are taken to see a number of creative's sheds and studios and also the one in which our collaborator, Graham, works.

Day 6:
At this morning’s session Sofia presented her MArch Portfolio to the first and second year students in order to share some tips on portfolio layout techniques and presentation skills.

Day 6:
Following Friday’s presentations at which a final design was decided on, at todays morning session our guest tutor Colin advised on how to best construct the Relive’66 Pavilion.

In the afternoon of the first day Melody and Julie inspect the store's collection of items.

11am, Day One... The project is outlined and brief is presented to the students, informing them they will be visiting Mustard Tree later in the afternoon.

We listened carefully to our collaborators, Ralph Cappers, feedback last week and have worked hard today in the workshop to progress our designs. As always, we're hitting a few obstacles along the way but that's the creative process!

Some really interesting and exciting designs have emerged from last weeks design process - here is the concept model from the 'Tension' group.

While the groups worked on MIF, some of us sawed and filed threaded rods, ready for the Threshold Festival structure.

To recap from today, great effort getting the bar finished - it looks ace! For tomorrow, meet at 10am in CH713 as agreed this afternoon and we can begin printing the artwork and decorating the bar. Please bring any paints, paintbrushes, spray paint, wire, pegs, clips etc. you have knocking around to jazz up the bar :) We need to get the painting done in the morning so that it will dry in time to head over to the Salutation at 4ish. Desining the bench, precedent

Here are a few sketches of our thought process for the construction of the installation. We are hoping to create some simple joints to join the pieces together.

Later, we split the team up into half and tried to mock the different phases of the installation. This gave us indication on how large the spaces we create are going to be and idea on the joints we need to construct it.

In the afternoon, we received delivery for our timber for the installation.

We had a relaxed Monday morning with the team finishing off a few of their drawing that they did not manage to complete last week, giving them a chance to re-fresh their memories.
