Group 02 The Sir Samuel Kelly Project

The Sir Samuel Kelly Project is a ‘live project’ aiming to align the design and building process for a new boat shelter with active research workshops involving ESALA and Queens University Belfast. This joint collaboration from both institutions aims to continue the historical significance of the Sir Samuel Kelly. The new shelter aims not only to reduce the corrosive processes of weathering that threaten the boat’s future, but they also aim to create a new public interpretation space for the town to raise the profile of the longer term project and display the wider maritime heritage of Donaghadee. // Download Poster

The structure design team and ship rack design team have been working hand-in-hand for a 1:50 model of the lifeboat exhibition space. See how nice the boat sits within the space! We can't wait to see how the design could extend to the external open space.

Day 4 : develop the design
Work as a big group in the morning to discuss and share ideas. In the afternoon, each small groups continue to develop the design for facade, structure, site model, presentation and ship rack model.

After reviewing with the architects, we got a selected design for boat supporting rack to be pushed forward! The sinuous wave form allows the boat to sit elegantly within the structure and retains a sense of composure and balance. Well done Kilian for the exciting proposal! We can't wait to see the final model *applause*

Research on materials
The group are divided in to two. One works on the Skin of the shelter and the other work on the Structure. At the end of the day they will share the information among the member of the group and develop to the design on the next day.

We are making a competition among the 1st and 2nd years students to design the ship supporting rack in pairs/individual. There are a lot of interesting ideas coming out. The best design will be chosen to be further developed.

First Skype meeting with our collaborator Michael Collins this week! We're very happy to have grab hold of a clear brief from the architect and got loads of inspirations for the event arrangement. The team is now working hard on the programme planning. Details will be posted shortly. Stay tuned!
