Group 09 Ca[re] :generation

We will be exploring the possibility of the re-use of existing buildings into a ‘care hotel’ model. This will involve initially developing a 'standard concept model' in terms of programme arrangement, to be adapted to meet the constraints of specific sites. These will include a range of existing building types including residential, commercial and retail. Suggested sites include: Stretford Shopping Mall, Owens Park Tower and the site of the former BBC building on Oxford Road as a new-build option. // Download Poster

Here are the rooms we will be working in from Monday onward.

Be sure to refer to this as we are in a different room every day!

Today we were briefed by architects at Pozzoni.

They gave us an overview of their research into care hotels. We were shown 3 examples of built projects they have visited in the Netherlands giving us an insight into what a care hotel is.

This is a great foundation for our research over the coming weeks!

We recommend downloading the 'get me there' app for purchasing tickets to and from Altrincham.

This should speed up our journeys to the Pozzoni office!

Wait until the day of travel before you buy your tickets. We will need to buy a return ticket from St Peters Square to Altrincham.

The app is free and available for Apple and Android.

It's optional, so if you want to stick to good old fashioned paper tickets, that's not a problem!

Reconsidering Intergenerational Living

Many current care hotel schemes incorporate an element of intergenerational living. Children’s nursery spaces are integrated within this care hotel in the Netherlands (pictured).

During the events weeks we will be looking at innovative ways to design spaces for intergenerational living within the buildings we have chosen in and around Manchester as sites for re-use.

More details about the sites to follow.

What exactly is a ‘care hotel’?

During the events weeks we will be taking inspiration from care hotels currently operating in the Netherlands (pictured) to produce concept models for future UK based care hotels.

Follow the link below to find out more about care hotels and how they could be beneficial to the future of UK healthcare.

Over the course of the events weeks, the Ca[re]:Generation student team will have the opportunity to collaborate with Pozzoni – a multidisciplinary architectural practice based in Altrincham, just outside Manchester.

We will be working closely with associates at the practice to develop new concept models for intergenerational living and in particular the ‘care hotel’ model, using research conducted by Pozzoni in the Netherlands. This is an exciting opportunity to be directly involved with the development of a concept design for new care facilities with the aim being to eventually introduce the ‘care hotel’ model to the UK.

During the events weeks, we will be splitting our time between developing concept drawings and models at MSA and participating in design reviews, presentations and an exhibition at Pozzoni’s office in Altrincham.

More details to follow soon!
