Group 13 Urban Greening
Working in partnership with Bruntwood, this ‘Events 2018’ project intends to re-imagine the relationships that exist between the urban landscape, architecture and nature.
Urban Greening challenges you to respond to the complexities of a live feasibility brief using your skills as designers to consider and apply how we can use vegetation and landscaping around existing buildings to create engaging urban environments. // Download Poster

Detroit's Urban Farms have also been examined by students. Residents of Detroit adopted such schemes to rehabilitate depleted landscapes and create self-reliant communities. Again, basic principles of this approach have been applicable to Urban Greening proposals in Manchester.

The High Line in New York is an example Urban Greening students have looked at for inspiration for their own designs. It presents a unique approach to incorporating vegetation into a dense but disused urban space.

Finishing the day off with tutorials in small groups. There has been a lot of discussing today and groups are really progressing in refining their ideas. Great to see a mix of approaches from modelling, painting, sketching and rendering and thinking about how this work will be presented to the clients.

Above is the current two week programme for the event.
The schedule comprises of a site visit, design charrettes, as well as opportunities to test designs in a variety of mediums such as by hand and via a series of models. The proposals can also be developed in two and three dimensional form in order to create a coherent and fluid response to the brief.
The final day will consist of presenting the finalised designs for Alberton House. Colleagues from the collaborator Bruntwood will be present at this event, providing a valuable opportunity for students to liaise with and gain feedback from the client of the live-project.

We're now developing a detailed schedule of our 2 weeks and starting to come up with the competition teams we'll be dividing into during those weeks!
