#ARTONTHESLY
At ART X PARADISE, we cherish collaborative work and admire actions that support artists. One of our first year members has organised an event called Art
on the Sly. Here all art is welcome, nothing will be rejected. Their mission is to create a night of appreciation, pride and community. They are working with Love C.O.P’s who host and co-produce inclusive, community-centred events.
Art on the Sly will be held on Friday 16th March at 10pm with the location yet to be announced. Check their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/185963142013370/
During the Art X PARADISE events programme, we aim to focus on collaborative working environments, community engagement and social support of creativity. Perhaps Art on the Sly could inspire your designs and intentions for the site that we will be working with during your events programme?
Paradise Works want to see design interventions which promote social engagement that could kick-start development of the site and be welcoming to the community.

#WORKSHOPS
Throughout the Events programme, we will each be hosting a workshop aimed at introducing creativity. We are currently discussing the prospect of providing you with workshops that vary in materiality and focus on craft. The concept of making and testing techniques is something we encourage. We are excited to see your artist talents and hopefully these will inspire your designs.
As well as sending you over a programme by email and facebook, a brief outline of what we are planning will be posted on here in the next few weeks. Keep a look out !

#DONATE
In order for our project to be successful, we must raise £100 in order to rent the gallery space at Paradise Works in which the final workshop will take place.
Renting
this space will provide students with the invaluable opportunity to engage with such an exciting organisation, as well as constructing parts of their intervention on or near the site.
Over the next few weeks, we will be asking local artists and architects to support the relationship between the two by donating, as well as organising a variety of fundraising events.
To donate, please visit:

Thanks!

#PICTORIALSPACE
Jo is currently undertaking a Practice based PhD at the University of Leeds which examines Painting and Materiality. She previously studied Fine Art at the University of West of England and completed her MFA at Manchester School of Art.
Her practice is concerned with hybridised forms of painting that have resonance within the phenomenological ambitions of Minimalism. She considers how the compositional and material components of painting affect the experiential basis of the viewer, not what the painting means but what it does. Her observations become translated through the construction of three-dimensional pictorial compositions ‘in between’ the space of painting and architecture.
The practice aims to provoke an artistic reorientation towards painting that engages the sensorial and brings painting back into a materialist dialogue with real things in the world. She creates a re-evaluation of a painting’s relationship with space, where painting is matter and space, real and physical; allowing the viewer to establish a dual physical and optical relationship to the work.

#TIPPINGTHESCALES
Today we visited the new exhibition at Paradise Works called Tipping the Scales presented by Kieran Leach and Precious Innes under the moniker Show.me.up.
The exhibition features UK based artists who are all are varying stages of their careers and has an emphasis on sculptural work. The piece shown above is called 'The grant or failure to grant such approval or the making of or failure to make such objection or any such inspection of or failure to inspect' by Precious Innes.
The exhibition is open from 1-5pm on weekends or by appointment until the 31st of March and is definitely worth a visit!

#FOUNDOBJECTS
Lucy Harvey is the co-director of Paradise Works and works in the studio herself as an artist. Within her work she uses found objects, materials and process to explore
the documentation of the human condition and explores the ideas of how we, as humans create meaning within our lives.
Often her research led work culminates as sculptures and installations but she also creates public activities such as talks and tours. Her use of found objects could be interesting to pull inspiration from when undertaking your own design!
If you want to take a closer look a Lucy Harvey’s work you can either visit her profile on the Paradise Works website or visit https://lucyelsieharvey.com/

#REUSE
Driven by materiality, contemporary artist Precious Innes often uses throwaway and ad hoc substances to create pieces that question her medium's original function. To do this, Precious uses different techniques and magnitude of manipulation, which alter her materials' structure.
Precious says, 'Exploring a material's structure is vital to the playful process of my work; often using gravity as a means to push the object, forcing the object to react in a way that it may become free standing.'
Furthermore, Precious chooses to work with a mixture of objects that are relatable to the everyday, as well as those that are in a pure or raw state, such as plaster or expanding foam.
Personally, I enjoy Precious' work due to her use of readily available materials - something that we are encouraging during this year's events programme.

#ARTISTICINSPO
During the Events week we will ask you to select an artist, who is working at Paradise Works, to base your work on. Your initial design proposals should
aim to derive from artistic inspiration and illustrate topics which are highlighted by one of the artists. Established in April 2017, Paradise Works is currently home to 28 proactive, intergenerational, contemporary artists; working across sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, design, film, audio, performance, photography & curation.
Over the course of this week we will be posting a few profiles to give you a flavour of the expanse and range of all the artists to choose from.
If you want to see the full list of artists working at Paradise Works, have a peek at their website here: https://www.paradise-works.com/artists/

Meet Kassi!
#JOINTHETEAM
'Hey guys! My name is Kassandra, I'm half-Cypriot and half-German and just moved to the UK for my Postgrad. I did my undergrad in Germany and spent my year out volunteering in the US and Ecuador and worked for six months in the Austrian office 'Alleswirdgut' - which literally translated means 'Everything is going to be all right' - in Vienna. I joined QED and enjoy participating in competitions and assessing the environmental impacts of our built environment. I am extremely excited and very curious to get to see the outcomes of our Events-week, explore art in the context of public interventions, to meet you all and have a great time.'

Meet Shiv!
#JOINTHETEAM
'Hi, I’m Shiv! I’m from Sri Lanka and moved to good ol’ Manchester to study architecture and never left. During my year in industry, I worked at BCA Landscape, who are a Liverpool based Landscape Architecture practice. The project I most enjoyed working on was a large themed play area as a part of the islands project for Chester Zoo, which was an amazing experience. Despite being back on an architecture course, I am interested in the design and organisation of the surrounding landscape in addition to the architecture.'

Meet Rosie!
'Hi, I’m Rosie and I am looking forward to meeting you all for our events project! I am new to Manchester School of Architecture this year after studying for my undergraduate degree at Leicester School of Architecture as part of De Montfort University. After this I took two years out working at a residential practice in London where I mainly worked on high end residential projects. I loved the time I spent at work as seeing drawings become a reality through construction is what really excites me about architecture. I am currently part of CIA and really enjoy the challenge of designing projects based on a realistic brief that could easily become reality. I am really excited about our events project and the opportunity to combine art and architecture. I can’t wait to see what you all come up with!'

Meet Nick!
#JOINTHETEAM
'Hey! I'm Nick and I'm really excited to be part of Art x Paradise. Originally from London, I completed my Part I at the University of Edinburgh, which I absolutely loved. In my placement year, I had two jobs. Firstly, I worked for Weston Williamson + Partners, an award-winning architecture practice, specialising in infrastructure, urban regeneration and place making in the UK and abroad. Here, I worked primarily on Paddington Crossrail Station. Secondly, I worked for Charcoalblue LLP, which is an innovative theatre and acoustics consultancy firm; this gave me the opportunity to combine my love of architecture and theatre. I am currently in USE and enjoy design that focuses on iterative production, model making, and alternative theory. I look forward to meeting you soon!'

Meet Sandhya!
#JOINTHETEAM
'Heyyy – I’m Sandhya. I’m from Nottingham and I did my undergraduate degree at Manchester. During my year out, I worked for Leonard Design Architects, who are a design-led architectural practice with offices in London, Nottingham, Kuala Lumpur and Sydney. The practice’s work varies in typology and scale: from the masterplanning of city centres to the design of one off boutique retail units. I worked predominantly on a range of residential projects, which included apartments, private homes and mixed-use masterplanning. The atelier that I am currently in is USE. I love combining architecture with art and having the chance to test the boundaries of traditional architectural discourse. I love being creative through painting, drawing and making. Working with the artists at Paradise works will be such an exciting process – I can’t wait!'
