Behind the scenes!
“trying to capture every single moment of the events”
Posted 8 May 2018 03:12
At the end of the the busy period of events the students produced their concept models, final models and construction manuals booklets. All of the three groups produced amazing work for that short period of time and all of the 5th year were very proud of them! In addition, our collaborators from Luna were also very impressed from the work of the students and tje final decision was not an easy case!

In the end of this journey all of the groups have tested several ideas and the most important was the application in real life! They had to think very carefully every aspect and every detail of the design!
I believe that the team that won the competition should be very proud of themselves because their design will be soon constructed in 1;1 and this is the biggest achievement for them during events!
However, all of the groups have worked very hard to produce their tasks!
Well done to all 1st and 2nd years and good luck with your portfolios!

FINAL MODELS

Final models were very important for our collaborators decision for the winning team. Models helped them understand joints and construction details in order to make the best decision.

DAY 9

After students' presentations and Luna's decision for the winner we spent sometime with students to present them our work from 3rd year undergraduate course. This was a small introduction to students for the following years as well as the expectations for a 3rd year student in architecture.

DAY 9

Final presentation day!
Students presented their final design supported with models and a construction manual to our event collaborators Simi and Vicky. They explained their design approach in depth to them and describe how the workspaces can be assembled and disassembled easily taking only a few minutes. (Luna's requirement for the design).

After the presentation Vicky and Simi took some time to analyse the designs and conclude to the one that fulfils the most their requirements. It wasn't an easy decision because as they have explained all of them have been really good and students spend a lot of time on them. But they have concluded to team "Stacked", a design proposal that was clever and enjoyable, as well as constructed easily using re-usable materials.

Tomorrow is the final presentation of students to our collaborator Luna. They will present their final idea to Luna along with their final models and a construction booklet.

After the presentation Vicky and Simi from Luna will have a discussion on the designs and decide the one that fulfils their requirements the most. On the same day we will announce to students the winner. Luna will have the construction booklet of the winning design and once they get their funding they will be able to construct the work space by following the instructions in the construction manual!

Almost there!

DAY 7

While some of the students have been working at the workshop the other members of the team are preparing their booklet that is also submitted to Luna. The client wants to exhibit both the models and the booklets.

The booklets contain information on the design proposal, construction process, materials and cost of production!

DAY 7

MODEL MAKING DAY!

Students have been using the wood workshop in order to make their final models done! They also had a chat with the guys at the workshop in order to solve some issues considering their models.

Can’t wait to see your final models!

DAY 6

Students focused on finalising their idea and prepare their files for the last models that will present in Luna, in 1:5 or 1:10 as well as 1:1 connection detail.

They have also started preparing their booklet considering the construction process of their design proposals.

Well done guys! Tomorrow will be a great day. Model making day!!

DAY 5

After their talk yesterday with Simi, students took their design a step forward and start designing the detailed connection of their proposal as well as having a look at the cost of the design by looking at different providers. They try to keep the cost to the minimum as possible and reduce the material waste!

Keep going and I can't wait to see your 1:1 detail model of connection and your 1:10 model of your final design!

DAY 4

Students presented their initial ideas with models to Luna's co-founder, Simi.

They had time to present their work so far to Simi and she explored in detail their models and concepts.
After the presentation she also get around the groups to give feedback to them and to discuss further their concepts.
She mentioned that students should concentrate on materiality and cost of the design and advise them to put some colour on the design since it is for artists and it needs to be creative!

Great work from all benchworkers. Simi seemed to like all of the preliminary ideas. Keep up the hard work! Almost there!

DAY 3

The group of students developed their initial concept ideas for a foldable work space further. Sketch models were essential in order to examine their ideas.

Group "Stacked" developed a work bench with rods that can be placed in different places to create work spaces of different heights as well as exhibition areas for the artists.

Great work from the team! As a further step they will examine the connection and the stability of the work bench!

Hi, I am Thomi Steliou, 5th year student in USE atelier.

I had my Bachelor degree at Manchester School of Architecture. For my year out, I worked for Forum Architects in Cyprus, on a confidential project in Saudi Arabia. I am really interested in the spatial experience in architecture and study the psychological and emotional behaviour of objects and spaces.

Therefore, our event project offers a connection between the user and the object and I am over-excited to start examining different possibilities for our output. Our work bench proposal should be a combination between studies of ergonomics, as well as, an inspirational unit for the user (artists).

PS. I love model making!!

After another meeting with our collaborator from Luna, Vicky! We discussed some further details about the work bench project. Also we just completed our risk assessment along with the technical team of the to make sure that everyone enjoys safely our events. Along with the risk assessment, we developed a detailed timetable to make sure that our work is on schedule!

We also have a small surprise for you!
