Today we starting bring all models into one group model in Unity. Test walkthrough the part of the model. We are currently working on developing convincing streetscape and atmosphere.
Posted 29 Mar 2017 12:56
In addition to creating building models we have created series of props to populate the street scapes. These props are essential for creating convincing and interactive virtual environments.
Posted 29 Mar 2017 12:54
During this event Year 1 & 2 students developed a working knowledge of 3ds Max and Unity as well as improved their Sketch Up skills. They have also learnt some useful techniques and workflows of how to model their designs.

Day 5: The students were then asked to cut up the model and take a piece of it away. They would then attempt to draw an architectural section through each piece.

Day 5: The 'final' model!
Posted 29 Mar 2017 12:44
Day 5: All students collaborated on the model to build it further in 3D using whatever materials we had to hand. By randomly partitioning 3D space the plan was to then use this as the start of a conceptual form.

Day 5: Our day started with scrunching up lots of pieces of paper, as a conceptual aid and form-finding technique!

Day 5: We analyse some overlays to learn how to perform similar techniques on our site for Events, in an area of North Manchester
Posted 29 Mar 2017 12:32
Day 5: Phil Watson talks to us about analysis and mapping techniques like layering and overlaying, and shows us examples of his previous students' work.

Day 5: Phil Watson, design tutor from Greenwich University (formerly of UCL/Bartlett Unit 19) came in to blow the students' minds (and ours!) with a day-long workshop on conceptual drawing, mapping and modelling
Posted 29 Mar 2017 11:34
Final group outcome from the drawing workshop with Phil Watson. Everyone had a piece of the site that they explore through drawing non-object driven architectures. All of the conceptual sketches than be montaged together to create an abstract representation of our site.

In a world driven by technology, its great to see students still using a pen! A fantastic sketch that really helps convey the scheme.
Posted 29 Mar 2017 10:29
Further tutorials were underway yesterday with teaching the students how to create animations, a simple but effective way to communicate ideas. Not only are these skills valuable in terms of communicating ideas to the client this week, they will also becoming useful in their studio projects!
Posted 29 Mar 2017 10:25
The beginning of this week saw the students making amendments to their designs following the presentation on Friday with the community group and architect. In preparation for the final presentation to the client, 5th years have been giving advice and tutorials on how to represent work.

Today's Dragon's Den presentation at MIF HQ went really well. The panel liked aspects of all of the designs and appreciated all the effort that had been put into the project over the past 6 days! Tomorrow, we head to Liverpool to continue work on our Threshold Festival structures.

Here is our first joint!.
As Frampton himself expressed, "...so much so that the generic joint becomes a point of ontological consideration rather than a mere connection.” :P :DDD
Posted 28 Mar 2017 22:54
In the afternoon, we started cutting out the joint plates and started to construct the pieces together. It was great fun to be in the workshop and seeing individual pieces coming together.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 22:52
This morning were got going from the start the team started to prepare for construction. Two groups had separate sections of the installation to work on and all of them came up with great solutions.

CAMRA pop up bar preview. We are pretty pleased with our students design and so where CAMRA. They are going to be taking it to a beer and cider festival they run in June in Manchester.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 21:55
Last push tomorrow guys! Becca and I will pick up the bar in the morning and take it in a van (courtesy of CAMRA) to the Pilcrow so we will meet you all at the Pilcrow at 2pm. Bring everything you need for setting up the exhibition and bar and we will see you there for a pint!

'Tessellated Tunes' installation slowly taking shape today in the Night & Day Café! Although the installation process went quite smoothly, we had to adjust the heights of the clusters due to site restrictions. Installation continues tomorrow!

The process of fireproof spraying of our individual modules took place on the 4th floor terrace! We made some good use of the nice weather!
Posted 28 Mar 2017 20:03
We've worked out a preliminary plan for the location of each piece or work... This could be subject to change as ideas develop!

Small scale to large scale! Some students have used different techniques to print onto fabric. This amazing piece by Ceri will be hung in a double height space in the GK Gallery.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:51
After a week of test printing and idea development we are beginning to see some great final outputs... like these screen prints by Jane.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:51
Before heading to the site today to assemble the first part of the
installation, we produced detail drawings with measurements and height variations to speed up the process.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:47
Not bad for a first try! The screen printing inductions went really well and were a bit of fun too.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:40
Initial attempt at screen printing!
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:39
To experiment with the arrangement of the installation clusters we
produced several 3D model variations. The design chosen transforms in scale from small-large to small clusters creating a dynamic flow in space. Due to restrictions in time and materials
we decided to construct only the central part of the final design.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:36
The colour selection for the test prints... We can mix our own colours when we create our final pieces.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:36
Screen printing inductions! We started off with a small drawing exercise to create images to practice printing during the induction.
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:33
The Pinterest board created for the students to share ideas is filling up nicely!
Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:28
Following the presentation from the graphic design students, we looked at a range of precedence and work that they had created. This was a great source of inspiration and gave us a chance to ask questions about how certain effects/ techniques could be achieved.

Posted 28 Mar 2017 19:21
On day two we had a presentation from the two graphic design students who are collaborating with us. They discussed a variety of printing techniques and explained how to prepare drawings for different processes.
