Events 2018

A productive and intriguing visit to the fabric shop this morning with some of the members of our team. We explored the various types of printing methods and fabrics available to print on ,which gave us an insight into costing and production time. 📌

Wednesday 18th: groups of three undergraduates spent time researching the history of Cornerhouse and in the afternoon presented their findings to each other.

Graphics and Booklet Team

Whilst the construction team have begun work on building the Soapbox the graphics team have made a start on designing panels to decorate the Soapbox! Each member of the team has picked one of the festival's themes so we've got plenty of different graphics ranging from CND posters to a Speaker's Corner timeline.

Day Two: Yesterday we visited the town hall to understand its history and each group found the part what they liked. This morning meeting, each group briefly introduced the parts they were preparing to start and then began collecting relevant information.

I think we need a bigger car.

Thankfully we were able to get them delivered the following day instead! The majority of the materials have arrived and the remaining are on schedule to arrive tomorrow.

Research on materials
The group are divided in to two. One works on the Skin of the shelter and the other work on the Structure. At the end of the day they will share the information among the member of the group and develop to the design on the next day.

The first morning of work is complete and we aren’t far off a complete stud ‘wing’! Great progress and great weather = happy days.

The stud wall is starting to take shape! The noggins have been sawn to size and the first of the two timber ‘wings’ in coming together.

Scorcher! What a day to start the build.

The construction team have been preparing the final drawings and ensuring all dimensions are correct before the first timbers are cut. The other team are off to a positive start and have already proposed great ideas for the perspex design.

The students have been split into two groups. One half of the team will be constructing the Soapbox whilst the other half will be putting together a construction manual and leading the design for the perspex panels.

Making the most of the rare Manchester sun and checking the Sketchup model before construction starts tomorrow.

#WORKING

After a morning of research and experimentation, we are spending our afternoon getting creative!

Some final preparation before we start the build! This afternoon we met with our collaborator and took the pallets over to the site to ensure they were happy with the proposed location for the Soapbox.

Here are the rooms we will be working in from Monday onward.

Be sure to refer to this as we are in a different room every day!

Day Two: A trip to the library.
Group 5 are researching window details prior to heading down to the B15 Workshop tomorrow. There is no better place than the library to extract this information and prepare some drawings.

Day 2// Hailey Hao // Competition Design by group 2 - Hailey! I am honestly so impressed with the ideas these students are giving us. It's unbelievable.

Recap - Yesterday we were lucky enough to receive a tour of Manchester Town Hall. The team were then split into sub-groups and selected an element they found most interesting. We have a total of 5 sub-groups, all researching precedents of their chosen element.

Second Day!! Voting for design
The best design are voted by everyone in the events group and our collaborators. Then it will get developed for the final.

The wealth of knowledge within the books the students have gathered from the All Saints Library will provide essential insight into the theories and methods within Neo-Gothic Architecture

Second day !! Present the ideas
After the hard work of yesterday, everyone got chance to present their interesting designs and concepts. Different type of ideas have been explored through sketches, 3D-models, Photoshop and physical models.

What a great day for sitting by the window and getting creative!

The team has been split into two - the first group are concentrating on designing a community engagement event, including games, workshops and questionnaires to find out what older people want from housing in Greater Manchester.
This will be a key event in our events week!

Day 1// Chun Pui Charles Ho ‎‎ // Roland Buit // Yeun Lee // group 2, Charles can be seen diligently gathering the needed information concerning fire resistant materials for the project.

Day 1// Michael Adebayo‎‎ // Roland Buit // Yeun Lee // are the members of group 2, they collated all the prevalent information concerning fire regulations for the specific site.

Taking teams 1 and 2 for a tour of the Copper Street entrance of the Town halls to gain a contextual analysis of the entrance.

This morning we are working in teams to produce site analysis. Using pictures and sketches from the site visit yesterday, we will be sharing this with the rest of the group this afternoon.

Yesterday, we had our first consultation at St.Marys school. Kids were very excited, to learn more about architecture.

On the first day we had a guided tour through the courtyard to familiarise ourselves with the building as a group.

Day 1// GIORGIANA PADUREAN // Giorgiana is from Group 1 also and she and FELIX EXTON-SMITH from Y2 were both engaged with the 3D modelling of the existing site on sketch up after gathering all the site survey measurements.

Day 1// ZITING HAO// We divided Y1 and Y2 BA into 4 groups yesterday. Hailey is from Group 1 and they did a wonderful accurate site survey of the Lobby space which was then converted into clean existing plans for the space.

[DAY 1] Ship Rack Design - By Kjestyn

In the afternoon, initial design session was held. Everyone participated well with their ideas about pop-up cinema. We talked through our impression on the site visit and the town.
At the end, everyone including master's students came out with masterplan design of pop-up cinema and we shared all the ideas for the next design stage. It was a nicely-done design session and well done for everyone!

We used diagrams, sketches and photographs as means of documenting our site visit. Findings will be later presented to the whole group, as a part of a morning of brainstorming!

We met up as a group and had a wonder around the site to understand the immediate context and site conditions.

There is an interesting history behind the river and its relationship to the site that we think would be exciting to research further.

Incredibly pleased to announce our new collaborators... The Memoirs. Nottingham's five piece, twin guitar, alt-rock band hail from the same university that gave us London Grammar an Amber Run. The Memoirs, having recently supported homeless charities in Nottingham, have provided exclusive access to their single 'Matter of Time'. We will be featuring the single in our final production video.

TOUR ESSENTIALS//
As with the tour of the Town Hall today, tomorrows tour will be sure to give you a lot of inspiration and information which you will no doubt want to capture and record to use later in the events programme. So don't forget to bring your essential tour items: sketchbooks, pens, a camera and anything else that you think will help you better document the character of the outdoor spaces you will be visiting.

First day today. Great talk from Leandro discussing our role within Prefigurative Architectures and big thank you to Mark Greenwood from the Wai Yin Welcome Center for coming down and meeting the group!

Great to meet everyone! We have done an introduction in the morning,going through our project and risk assessment! Hope your guys have a better understanding of our event!

Today group 11 was introduced to health and safety regulations which were followed by the tour around Towan Hall. Students had an opportunity to analyse and study architecture and neo-gothic elements for their further research.

The 1:1 team and Paul from our awesome collaborator In-Situ in front of Brierfield Library (our studio for the day) after a great Site Visit and an inspiring Design Session.

Discussions on design ideas

Once we have our material curated and exhibition designed, we will need to build a prototype for our final events.

Our preferred prototype uses canvas fabric to display our work, but also keep the exhibition lightweight and easily demountable.

Today we have explored some of the options available for printing directly onto textiles in the School of Art.

As mentioned this morning, by the end of tomorrow you will be divided in two groups. These groups reflect the two parts of this project, A: Designing the installation (partitions) and B. Putting together the above model of Albert Square.

Following the Induction and Tour, the 1st and 2nd year students are getting to know one another and slip into teams to begin the events programme we have prepared.
