We’ve had some samples delivered!

As you will have seen from the previous post with our sketch model, we are incorporating string/cord into our design in a combination of ways. Due to being on show day and night at the festival, we are exploring the use of UV reactive products and lighting to create a more interesting and stimulating installation.

Welcome students of Architecture. My name is Dylan Thompson and I am also a member of the CPU Atelier. I will be around to assist you during the events week with your final outputs and for anyone who is interested in developing their skills on a new software.

Above is the current two week programme for the event.

The schedule comprises of a site visit, design charrettes, as well as opportunities to test designs in a variety of mediums such as by hand and via a series of models. The proposals can also be developed in two and three dimensional form in order to create a coherent and fluid response to the brief.

The final day will consist of presenting the finalised designs for Alberton House. Colleagues from the collaborator Bruntwood will be present at this event, providing a valuable opportunity for students to liaise with and gain feedback from the client of the live-project.

Ahead of our meeting with Decordia & Phil (fabricator) on Monday, we have been working to make sure we can provide as much information and detail as possible to communicate our ideas and designs.

Sometimes a rough and quick physical-model (like this one) can demonstrate an idea much more effectively than a series of drawings or CAD models.

#ARTONTHESLY

At ART X PARADISE, we cherish collaborative work and admire actions that support artists. One of our first year members has organised an event called Art on the Sly. Here all art is welcome, nothing will be rejected. Their mission is to create a night of appreciation, pride and community. They are working with Love C.O.P’s who host and co-produce inclusive, community-centred events.

Art on the Sly will be held on Friday 16th March at 10pm with the location yet to be announced. Check their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/185963142013370/

During the Art X PARADISE events programme, we aim to focus on collaborative working environments, community engagement and social support of creativity. Perhaps Art on the Sly could inspire your designs and intentions for the site that we will be working with during your events programme?

Paradise Works want to see design interventions which promote social engagement that could kick-start development of the site and be welcoming to the community.

Today we visited the Love For The Streets Exhibition at the Whitworth. We used it as an opportunity to learn about how to curate as well as different ways of displaying the work. This started to provoke some questions as to how we would like to approach our event, which will be discussed in length at our next meeting.

#WORKSHOPS

Throughout the Events programme, we will each be hosting a workshop aimed at introducing creativity. We are currently discussing the prospect of providing you with workshops that vary in materiality and focus on craft. The concept of making and testing techniques is something we encourage. We are excited to see your artist talents and hopefully these will inspire your designs.

As well as sending you over a programme by email and facebook, a brief outline of what we are planning will be posted on here in the next few weeks. Keep a look out !

Big news!

Thrilled to confirm our collaborator has had the sign-off and approval of our design with the Festival!!

This means we can really push on with materials, costing and detailing. We have been researching and exploring various possible materials to use (with samples on their way!) as well as how the BA 1st & 2nd years will be able to have their own personalized design inputs into the installation!

We have another meeting booked in for next week with Decordia, and hopefully a fabricator, so we can thrash out any structural or manufacturing issues whilst clarifying and confirm the final design.

It's been said before and will definitely be said again but genuinely exciting things are happening!

In just over 6 weeks time we will be welcoming 13 northern schools of architecture to Manchester to take part in the 2018 RIBA Northern Soul Charrette!

We look forward to circulating our promotional poster around the schools so they can gather interest from students who wish to take part, of which there will be a maximum of 10 from each school- representing all 5 years of study.

The success of previous years of the Northern Soul Charrette has been the way in which the subject and location of the brief remains a surprise up until the day of the charrette itself. For this reason we have worked closely with the RIBA regional team over in Liverpool to put together a poster that gives very little away to students.

Group 12 - Soapbox

We are meeting with our undergraduate students to develop the design of the Soapbox on Thursday 08/03. We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone in our group what a Soapbox is, and encourage some ideas for what a 'contemporary soapbox' may be.

In it's simplest form, a soapbox is a box or a crate used to elevate a public speaker. Our task is to create a 'contemporary soapbox' which aligns with the themes for the Manchester Histories Festival. These themes are: protest, democracy and freedom of speech.

A contemporary soapbox could take on many forms. Could the soapbox double up as a piece of art? Could it utilise recycled materials and act as a statement in itself by doing so? Could the soapbox be mobile? Or could the soapbox utilise a more modern form of freedom of speech – social media?

We are very excited to develop the design of the Soapbox on Thursday!

#DONATE

In order for our project to be successful, we must raise £100 in order to rent the gallery space at Paradise Works in which the final workshop will take place.

Renting this space will provide students with the invaluable opportunity to engage with such an exciting organisation, as well as constructing parts of their intervention on or near the site.

Over the next few weeks, we will be asking local artists and architects to support the relationship between the two by donating, as well as organising a variety of fundraising events.

To donate, please visit:

12//Detroit – Manchester - Zones of Urban Experimentation

Looking for inspiration? Start by exploring iconic photographers such as Corinne Day, Nick Knight, Mark Leckey and a legendary graphic designer Peter Saville. All artists carefully examine the contemporary artistic and stylistic representations of the north of England and the effect of geographical space on creative output and the importance of place.

11//Detroit – Manchester - Zones of Urban Experimentation

The interior design of the Hacienda can be translated into the stylistic patterns that were used across posters, album design and advertising of the music that was played inside. “People’s Palace”- the space within the club was painted in cool blue, with brightly clad balcony supports and diagonal stripes painted on columns. The urban theme continued with bold directional markings, neon bar signs and cat-eyes that mapped the floor.

Publication inspiration: We are starting to formulate a series of precedents for which our magazine could look like. Seen in the image above is the "YOU CUT ME OFF" book by Virgil Abloh. To our Northern Soul Charretters!

A quick update to let you know we will be taking you all on a quick tour around the city to take inspiration from the secret hideaways that Manchester has to offer. Digging a little deeper below the surface can turn up some surprising finds which will hopefully assist you all in curating the final exhibition.

Remember to bring a good pair of walking shoes. We're really looking forward to meeting you all!
