Cracking on planning out the timetable, we've been working hard to ensure we've packed in as much as possible whilst keeping activities varied, interesting, and engaging for the whole team.

The team are also happy to announce our collaborator from Decordia will be dropping in during the project to see how it's progressing as well as some design presentations from the first & second years!

We're expecting the events weeks to be hard work but it will result in some very satisfying and tangible rewards for both the team as a whole and each member!

Design Alert: This week we chose to represent a piece by Connection furniture, more specifically their straight modular platform seating. Their approach to this piece is to allow more seating space for groups as well as modular storage. It's easy to built, interactive and adapts to your needs whether it is to store more MSSA tshirts and totes or have an MSSA meeting. Remember, this is an inspirational piece of furniture.

#PICTORIALSPACE

Jo is currently undertaking a Practice based PhD at the University of Leeds which examines Painting and Materiality. She previously studied Fine Art at the University of West of England and completed her MFA at Manchester School of Art.

Her practice is concerned with hybridised forms of painting that have resonance within the phenomenological ambitions of Minimalism. She considers how the compositional and material components of painting affect the experiential basis of the viewer, not what the painting means but what it does. Her observations become translated through the construction of three-dimensional pictorial compositions ‘in between’ the space of painting and architecture.

The practice aims to provoke an artistic reorientation towards painting that engages the sensorial and brings painting back into a materialist dialogue with real things in the world. She creates a re-evaluation of a painting’s relationship with space, where painting is matter and space, real and physical; allowing the viewer to establish a dual physical and optical relationship to the work.

#TIPPINGTHESCALES

Today we visited the new exhibition at Paradise Works called Tipping the Scales presented by Kieran Leach and Precious Innes under the moniker Show.me.up.

The exhibition features UK based artists who are all are varying stages of their careers and has an emphasis on sculptural work. The piece shown above is called 'The grant or failure to grant such approval or the making of or failure to make such objection or any such inspection of or failure to inspect' by Precious Innes.

The exhibition is open from 1-5pm on weekends or by appointment until the 31st of March and is definitely worth a visit!

To all fellow Footbuilder's ...

Please find below a link to a 3D Visual Fly-through of the first stage of the proposed Wythenshawe AFC Plan of works for the site. The video was released upon completion of the Clubhouse in early 2017. The Stands/Seating shown in the video are yet to be built and designs have changed slightly. However, this is a representation of the first stage in the clubs further vision of upscaling. Our design will be centered around extension and growth of the scheme outlined in this video. Quick update for team Footbuild!

Quick shot of Jack getting a feel for the site after a meeting with our collaborators. Alongside all first and second year students, we will aim to meet with our collaborators as frequently as possible throughout the 2 week programme and arrange a visit to site within the first few days to get to grips with the site and clubs vision, this will be imperative to the projects success.

Quick update for team Footbuild!

Here is a panoramic shot pitch-side from a raised embankment. Wythenshawe AFC alongside all FA affiliated clubs must meet certain criteria to accommodate spectators as they climb the football ladder. Discussion has been made in regards to a phasing strategy to allow the stands to grow alongside the teams footballing success'. A lot of scope for development and creativity here due to the sites topography and scale, alongside our collaborators vision for the club moving forward.

#FOUNDOBJECTS

Lucy Harvey is the co-director of Paradise Works and works in the studio herself as an artist. Within her work she uses found objects, materials and process to explore the documentation of the human condition and explores the ideas of how we, as humans create meaning within our lives.

Often her research led work culminates as sculptures and installations but she also creates public activities such as talks and tours. Her use of found objects could be interesting to pull inspiration from when undertaking your own design!

If you want to take a closer look a Lucy Harvey’s work you can either visit her profile on the Paradise Works website or visit https://lucyelsieharvey.com/

#REUSE

Driven by materiality, contemporary artist Precious Innes often uses throwaway and ad hoc substances to create pieces that question her medium's original function. To do this, Precious uses different techniques and magnitude of manipulation, which alter her materials' structure.

Precious says, 'Exploring a material's structure is vital to the playful process of my work; often using gravity as a means to push the object, forcing the object to react in a way that it may become free standing.'

Furthermore, Precious chooses to work with a mixture of objects that are relatable to the everyday, as well as those that are in a pure or raw state, such as plaster or expanding foam.

Personally, I enjoy Precious' work due to her use of readily available materials - something that we are encouraging during this year's events programme.

08//Detroit – Manchester - Zones of Urban Experimentation

Factory Records: For those of you who are curious, the man in our Events poster is Tony Wilson. In 1978, alongside Alan Erasmus (right on the photo above), he started a Manchester-based British independent record label. The bands with the most numerous releases on Factory Records include Joy Division, Happy Mondays and New Order. The Hacienda (Mexican for ‘big beautiful house’) opened on May 21st 1982. This impressive new space acted as a music venue to record’s own musicians. The Architectural Review declared the club, “a pioneering interior”. On your first time Hacienda was an immersive experience in aesthetics of design which simply took your breath away. Ben Kelly, an interior designer of Hacienda realised a unique vision of how things should be – changing the expectations of UK club-goers.

Film Recommendation// “Control” (2007), shot entirely in black and white, it tells the story of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division.
“24 Hour Party People” (2002) , the story of the emergence of Manchester as a major musical centre in the late- 1970’s and 80’s. The story is told through the eyes of Tony Wilson.

Hi group 12!

After meeting with our collaborators last week and visiting the site we have started brain storming initial design ideas for the Soapbox.

It is now the time to start thinking about what this soapbox may be? Will it be physical? will it be virtual?

We want you to help us - We want your ideas!

We are currently in the process of organising a design session where we can discuss these ideas to see what's feasible. We will be discussing these ideas with our collaborators to ensure we meet all requirements from their behalf.

We will be posting some precedents on this blog to hopefully get your creative minds going but feel free to send us your ideas via email!

Northern Soul: The scene emerged in Britain during the late 60’s. The work of leading African-American recording stars on the Motown label was sought after by collectors in Britain. From the late 1960’s this was known as the ‘rare soul’ scene, and it grew substantially in the north of England.
Five principal venues were key to this growth: the Twisted Wheel club in Manchester; Blackpool Mecca (referred to as the ‘Mecca’); the Golden Torch in Stoke-on-Trent and most famously the Wigan Casino Club. It has been estimated that in the 1975 Northern Soul was attracting up to 100000 followers per week at it’s various venues. (Hewitt, 2000, p. 141)

Film Recommendation// “Northern Soul” (2014), an insight into 1970’s working class northern England. The film is a fictional story that authentically reflects the youth culture, as it depicts a story of two young boys whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of African-American soul music.

Gothic Revival is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England. Its popularity grew rapidly in the early 19th century, when increasingly serious and learned admirers of neo-Gothic styles sought to revive medieval Gothic architecture, in contrast to the neoclassical styles prevalent at the time.
Gothic Revival draws features from the original Gothic style, including decorative patterns, finials, scalloping, lancet windows, hood mouldings, and label stops.

06//Detroit – Manchester - Zones of Urban Experimentation

Greystone Ballroom: Around ten years ago, there was a global outrage when it was revealed that the then-abandoned old Motown ballroom was being demolished in order to be replaced by a parking lot. During the demolition of the infamous venue, the air was filled with invaluable old papers, some were invoices signed by various Motown stars. Within the Events week, we are going to be exploring how the extraordinary music history of Detroit has been allowed to crumble and be discarded as a result of political corruption.

Film Recommendation// “Detroit: Ruin of a City” (2005), an intriguing documentary about making a documentary about Detroit. The film looks back over the history of the city in the twentieth century: over the rise and fall of the social system identified by social theorists as ‘Fordism’.

We are now working on drafting a detailed Timetable for all days and activities.

05//Detroit – Manchester - Zones of Urban Experimentation

Motown: A portmanteau of ‘motor’ and ‘town’, is a record company that was founded in Detroit in 1959 by a former boxer and an automobile worker, Berry Gordy. It played an important role in the racial integration of popular music as an African-American- owned record label and quickly became another Detroit factory. Berry Gordy claimed to have learned from working with Ford “how production can be efficiently organised and automated for the highest quality” and for a “highly consistent product”. Musicians and singers were configured as production workers, as opposed to songwriters and producers who designed the final product. During Events, we are going to be capturing the link between musical and motor industrial role in the city – the link that is present in the history of Manchester.

Many current care hotel schemes incorporate an element of intergenerational living. Children’s nursery spaces are integrated within this care hotel in the Netherlands (pictured).

#ARTISTICINSPO

During the Events week we will ask you to select an artist, who is working at Paradise Works, to base your work on. Your initial design proposals should aim to derive from artistic inspiration and illustrate topics which are highlighted by one of the artists. Established in April 2017, Paradise Works is currently home to 28 proactive, intergenerational, contemporary artists; working across sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, design, film, audio, performance, photography & curation.

Over the course of this week we will be posting a few profiles to give you a flavour of the expanse and range of all the artists to choose from.

If you want to see the full list of artists working at Paradise Works, have a peek at their website here: https://www.paradise-works.com/artists/

Manchester Town Hall was opened in 1877, and since then it serves as ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council but also as a civic and administrative centre of the city.

To celebrate Town Hall's 140th anniversary, it was decided on it's renovation. This means that the Town Hall will be closed for visitors for the next 7 years.

If you never seen this exceptional work of architecture and craftsmanship from the inside, we are glad to welcome you to be part of our team and bring your own contribution to the city.

Over the course of the events weeks, the Ca[re]:Generation student team will have the opportunity to collaborate with Pozzoni – a multidisciplinary architectural practice based in Altrincham, just outside Manchester.

We will be working closely with associates at the practice to develop new concept models for intergenerational living and in particular the ‘care hotel’ model, using research conducted by Pozzoni in the Netherlands. This is an exciting opportunity to be directly involved with the development of a concept design for new care facilities with the aim being to eventually introduce the ‘care hotel’ model to the UK.

During the events weeks, we will be splitting our time between developing concept drawings and models at MSA and participating in design reviews, presentations and an exhibition at Pozzoni’s office in Altrincham.

More details to follow soon!

Interested in our collaborator Paradise Works? - This Saturday (3rd March), Paradise Work’s latest exhibitions opens to the public!

The exhibition, ‘Tipping the Scales’, focuses on sculptural work, and features UK based artists at various stages in their careers.

Curated by Kieran Leach and Precious Innes, the show exhibits a sense of art imitating life, and approaches play and societal pressures.

We’ll be heading down on Saturday, if you want to join, message Sandhya.

If not, please feel free to head down by yourselves - The exhibition is open on weekends from 1-5pm, or by appointment.

Following on from the productive meeting with our collaborator last week, we've certainly kept the ball rolling!

Whilst refining our design, we are collecting quotes for our shortlisted materials. By doing so, this has enabled us to put together a list of activities and potential hazards that may come about whilst using these materials for the risk assessment. Not the most glamorous of tasks but an essential and very important one to ensure the team will be working safely!

In the background we are also producing a 3D CAD model. This will initially aid our collaborator in further understanding the design in terms of aesthetics and form, whilst later providing us with accurate working dimensions for construction!

The incorporation of light is a key part of our brief, as the installation will need to really stand out during the night!

We visited the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford this weekend to spark some more ideas as to how we could use and manipulate light onto, within and/or from our piece, potentially creating different view-ports providing varied effects!

Some interesting and exciting ideas developing!

'Remodeling is a process of providing a balance between the past and the future. In the process of remodeling the past takes on a greater significance beause it, itself, is the material to be altered and reshaped. The past provides the already written, the marked 'canvas' on which each successive remodeling will find its own place. Thus the past becomes a 'package of sense' of built up meaning to be accepted, transformed or suppressed.' (Image shot from Town Hall inner courtyard.)

Splitting Up The Tasks: The intention for the 9 days is to split up tasks of the film, tours and magazine between us as a group and for us 5th years to lead each of the separate teams. The reasoning behind this is so that you can take part in which ever area you are most interested in or even rotate as the days go on. This will result in a better work flow as we will spread ourselves across different tasks as opposed to all working on one.

Manchester Town Hall is one of the many critical and special spaces within the city. It has just been closed for 7 years to undergo some important and necessary works to ensure the town hall is in it's best condition to continually provide a space for the city to use.

The Town hall is host to a variety of annual programmes; seeing thousands of visitors each year, visiting every single day!

We just had a great meeting with the Manchester City Council discussing this historical space, what it means to Manchester and the plans they have for the future.

Following a successful meeting in Bruntwood's offices to discuss our project scope, we were accompanied by the team for a site visit to discuss the potential proposals and ideas for the exhibition to show the work at the end of the Events weeks. We're now developing a detailed schedule of our 2 weeks and starting to come up with the competition teams we'll be dividing into during those weeks!

First meeting with our collaborators Ella and Karen from the Manchester Histories Festival. We discussed potential ideas and requirements for the Soapbox design with a particular emphasis on the Histories Festival themes of protest, democracy and freedom of speech. Key requirements were a means of amplification for the speaker, dimension in terms of how many people might be using the platform at one time and accessibility. There may also be the opportunity to collaborate with MMU illustration students who may be designing a logo for the event.

We also visited the site for the Soapbox in All Saints Parks which will not only host our Soapbox design but a CND structure and an area for posters to be displayed. We discussed the overall masterplan of the park and how our design might fit in with how the park is decorated for the festival.

Great meeting this week with our Client from Decordia!

She was very excited to see all of our fantastic ideas! The final design will now be taken forward to the rest of the Decordia team!

We will now be looking to develop the design and provide an idea on cost, material and how it will be manufactured!

We are hoping the students that will be working with us in Events will contribute to the design in their own unique way! It will be a very exciting couple of weeks!

Cheers!

03//Detroit – Manchester - Zones of Urban Experimentation

Magazine: The culmination of the film and tour will be a magazine which will document everything we found when doing research into Manchester and Detroit. The magazine will also include maps, data analysis, infographics and more which spot trends and comparisons into the two cities. If you are interested in compiling research, this will be a great opportunity to learn such software as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

For an example into the kind of publication we will look to produce. See the book; Living in the Endless City. “An in-depth and multidisciplinary examination of our rapidly urbanizing world.” Edited by Ricky Burdett and Deyan Sudjic.

01//Detroit – Manchester - Zones of Urban Experimentation

Film: One of the main outputs for the events week will be to create a short 3-minute film. However, we will look to use this film to bridge our two other outputs together. The film will be made as a documentary, not only for our progress and work but the research and footage we have found over the course of the 9 days. If you are interested in filmmaking, this will be a great opportunity to learn such software as Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro.
