DAY 7 //
Today a lot of progress was made with all of the models. The site model is almost complete with the exception of the base which will be added tomorrow. Some of the installations were also modelled at 1:100 scale. The installation designs for each square were then presented to the whole group before a vote was taken to decide on the winning partition.

Day 7 (26 Apr)
We reviewed the panels again and discussed how to improve the quality of the drawings, the clarity of the diagrams as well as the flow and layout of the final presentation.

Group C has split off and half of them are working on the model. This bunch is figuring out how to make a nice looking booklet for the final submission to the collaborator!

Day 6 (26 Apr)
We received good positive feedback from the staff at Centrepoint for our interim presentation! They were delighted and impressed with our proposals and appreciate that we incorporated most of their needs and requirements into our scheme. They are looking forward to our final proposal next Tue. Day 6 (25 Apr)
Well done everyone! Here are the highlights of our interim presentation. We were very happy with the positive feedback from the staffs and everyone is working hard on the design development in response to the suggestions.

Stencil Design

The design team are now working on stencil design to spray paint the ply wood panels for the soapbox! These designs continue to follow the histories festival themes of democracy and freedom of speech.

This morning we made a second visit to site - Alberton House, Manchester

Day 7 - Refinement

Day 7: The data collection continues. Everyone's working on a specific theme (i.e: music, art, architecture, industrial evolution, etc)

The Town Hall Model is nearly finished just waiting on the base so the students can put the installations models. Exciting times!!!

Perspex panels will fill some of the gaps in the timber stud wings. Others will be filled with laser-cut designs or left open.

Fixing the canvas roof:

In preparation for the canvas roof that will cover the soapbox, we have drilled fasteners into the timber stud frame

Our canopy model finally starting to take shape. Once completed we can start to create diagrams and a phasing strategy for the football clubs evolution up the league tables.

#SPRAY

One group are spraying their 1:1 tunnel cladding panels with found patterns from left over laser cutting sheets.

After days of modelling and testing, connections and Joints appear key to the success of the design, simplicity seems to be the way forward.

The turf has been laid on the site model. Just waiting for the grounds man to head over with a bucket of white paint.

Film: Some of the themes covered in the film will be; Music, Art, Culture & Politics. As well as this there will be footage of the tours which took place and students conducting research.
The film will be 3-5 mins long.

Film: The aim of the film is for the students to collate both found and shot footage into a coherent film which reflects both what has been researched and understood regarding the relationship of Manchester & Detroit, and also what they have been doing throughout events week.

Film: As well as the publication, we are aiming to produce a film which reflects and summaries the research conducted into both Manchester & Detroit. Students have been collecting footage throughout the week during the tours and site visits which have taken place.

Day 08: Editing of the publication continues and all the works are compiled together and the layout of the magazine is being monitored, information of the topics chosen by the students are uploaded and editing texts has begun for the final publication output and the filming group continues to work on the tapes and its editing.

The remainder of students have started on their final scaled working models of their designs.

A part of the students have been working on detailing their final construction booklet which will contain all the details of their final design. The 5th years have been guiding them with their outputs.

Group presentations to Decordia (collaborator) were received very positively.

Each group presented creative diverse design proposals including the process they undertook to reach their final design proposal.

DAY//7 | FUN WORK

Students have been finding some interesting places and ways of working. Good to find that the students are involved in working for Events. The students are working on their final outcomes today. Work is going well.

First day Introduction went well before making paper maquette models of the icosahedron.

Productive day with the students, weather-resistant varnishing almost completed on the cladding panels. Once the varnishing has finished drying in the MMU workshop spray booths, then it will be ready for transportation to the site.

This week, the students have been very productive both on site and in studio, exceeding all expectations that we had of them. Already achieving something that they hopefully found enjoyable and posed a different challenge to regular studio commitments

Today the students divided the work to model making and booklet making. While some students were at the wood workshop making models other students were working on the booklet at the studio!

DAY//6 | Discussions

The students had discussions with the 5th years and assistance from the Workshop Staff regarding the joinery details and finalizing the design details. The students are simultaneously working on the Construction Package and the Scaled model for the final output.

A handful of students went to revisit the site in the morning, taking further measurements, photos and videos to support their on-going designs!

While some of the students have been working at the workshop the other members of the team are preparing their booklet that is also submitted to Luna. The client wants to exhibit both the models and the booklets.

The booklets contain information on the design proposal, construction process, materials and cost of production!

MODEL MAKING DAY!

Students have been using the wood workshop in order to make their final models done! They also had a chat with the guys at the workshop in order to solve some issues considering their models.

DAY 07// FELIX EXTON-SMITH // The key is in the details. We want to provide the client not only with standard GA drawings and visuals but also with detailed drawings of all modular elements and the proposed joints. Due to the location of our site near a fire escape route, one of the key requirements was to provide modular elements that could be rearranged and removed if needed. Felix explored different ways to achieve that through a number of sketches.

Now we’re connecting them together, I’m existed that we will see them stand up!

DAY 07// Today we started with a design review on the modular elements, their design, function and the proposed detailing. Everyone are working hard on the final drawings and we are more than excited for the outcome.

Throwback Thursday - when we arrived at the town hall last week we had a team meeting before the inductions and wondered what the students would come up with. Just over a week later we are pleased to say they are surpassing our expectations, keep going everyone!

Cast elements are drying nicely, though it will be several weeks before they have fully dried, so some shrinkage is expected!

Whilst the students have been working hard to produce the models we have been busy recording their progress and making a film.

This week has involved lots of testing to decide on materials and finishes, such as layering wood stain, pictured above.

Final improvement before a big day tomorrow, Model Making!

Students focused on finalising their ideas, organising materials for 1:5 / 1:10 models and preparing a construction manual booklet. A VERY INTENSIVE & PRODUCTIVE DAY!

Experimenting: As the editing of the publication finally begins, all students are working on personal reflections inspired by their chosen research topic. From abandoned buildings to music, there is an array of topics that the students have covered, which would be a valuable aspect of our publication.

Getting It Together: On Day Seven, we are finally compiling the information together. Diagrams, photographs and text are being carefully edited. The information gathered during the 3 Tours are fuelling our reflections and research, making our response not only verbal but visual too.

Day Six: In the morning a small number of us worked on the book then in the afternoon a few more of us joined us on a visit to the museum of science and industry. This was a great way of getting first hand research for the industry section of our publication.

Some of the design team are currently putting together a document for the client that will show all of the design process and ideas that were involved with the Soapbox. Other members of the design team are finishing of the construction manual.

All groups are constructing this morning and we are so excited to see the projects coming together!

Today the teams are bringing all their sketches, drawings and models together to start creating presentations ready for our mock crit tomorrow.

As part of the charrette day, we organised tours for the students and staff. This was an exclusive opportunity for those participating and we hoped the tour of the building would generate some inspiration for their

Great first session back from the expedition to the Lake District, analysing the site response with Group 3. The group chose housing and the commodification of the rural as their emerging themes for their site response.

By using scrap materials and hand painting, the group's chosen site will be documented on a map through the medium of collage.
