Behind the scenes!
“trying to capture every single moment of the events”
Posted 8 May 2018 03:12
At the end of the the busy period of events the students produced their concept models, final models and construction manuals booklets. All of the three groups produced amazing work for that short period of time and all of the 5th year were very proud of them! In addition, our collaborators from Luna were also very impressed from the work of the students and tje final decision was not an easy case!
In the end of this journey all of the groups have tested several ideas and the most important was the application in real life! They had to think very carefully every aspect and every detail of the design!
I believe that the team that won the competition should be very proud of themselves because their design will be soon constructed in 1;1 and this is the biggest achievement for them during events!
However, all of the groups have worked very hard to produce their tasks!
Well done to all 1st and 2nd years and good luck with your portfolios!

The booklet has been an important part of the process where students had to analyse and consider every detail of their construction sequence in order to be easily understood by anyone who wants to create their design.

EXTENDABLE BOX TABLE
Sample of pages included in the construction sequence booklet. Students created the booklet as a step by step construction sequence including dimensions, cost and assembly process in order to be easier for our collaborators to create the workbench.

SUPERSLOT
Final line drawings from 'Superslot' team. Students considered cost and materiality and due to the tight budget they used standard sized materials while aiming for the least possible waste of material.

As we come to the end of EVENTS '18, the students have worked hard and fun at times on their workbenches. These are the final products by the three competing groups : Construction Booklets that give you an understanding of what the product is?, how efficient they are?; how to build/assemble/store them? and finally the cost and materials to make the product. Good job guys!! A copy of these booklets were given to LUNA (our collaborator) for them to choose the best design from.
It was fun working with the WORKBENCHERS!!

DAY 9
Final presentation day!
Students presented their final design supported with models and a construction manual to our event collaborators Simi and Vicky. They explained their design approach in depth to them and describe how the workspaces can be assembled and disassembled easily taking only a few minutes. (Luna's requirement for the design).
After the presentation Vicky and Simi took some time to analyse the designs and conclude to the one that fulfils the most their requirements. It wasn't an easy decision because as they have explained all of them have been really good and students spend a lot of time on them. But they have concluded to team "Stacked", a design proposal that was clever and enjoyable, as well as constructed easily using re-usable materials.

DAY 5// FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
GROUP A
This group came up with the idea to make a compact box that can be pulled out revealing a number of tables to be used. The challenge that comes with that is the type of joints that they will use. The sketch shows the development of the joinery being considered and those that can be used for the project!
Posted 25 Apr 2018 14:37
DAY 5// DETAIL DEVELOPMENT
GROUP C
This group utilises slits and slots all across the furniture piece. Coming up with the idea is the easy bit, figuring where the slits to be is the hard part! The sketches shows certain considerations that they need to take into account as to prevent the furniture from toppling.
Posted 25 Apr 2018 14:21
DAY 5// DETAIL DEVELOPMENT
GROUP B:
In order to make the bench work, this group has drawn up a mock-up detail of the joints. In this group they have decided to use a rod and hole system whereby the holes are created all across the structure of the table allowing for flexible heights of the tables!
Posted 25 Apr 2018 14:17
DAY//5
After the discussion with our collaborator Simi, students took their design proposals a step forward considering materiality and connections in detail. Students looked into different providers and the materiality dimensions in order to minimise the waste of materials.
Looking forward to the final drawings and models!!

DAY 5
After their talk yesterday with Simi, students took their design a step forward and start designing the detailed connection of their proposal as well as having a look at the cost of the design by looking at different providers. They try to keep the cost to the minimum as possible and reduce the material waste!
Keep going and I can't wait to see your 1:1 detail model of connection and your 1:10 model of your final design!

DAY 4// PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
We are designing an ‘extendable box table’ which is very durable thanks to its compressed design it is not an issue to manoeuvre around as there are discreet locking wheels built into the base of the legs and a gas mechanism helping to lift and lower the unit. Our table is able to serve a couple of people at the same time while it can also be used by individuals. The Extendable Box Table is designed to suit any space. Tables are adjustable so they can meet the user needs. Additionally, it has a secure piston system in place which allows it to hold this weight. Our product can also be used as laptop desk, drawing board (thanks to its lift-up ratchet), group activities purposes, storage for any tools or belongings etc.

They had time to present their work so far to Simi and she explored in detail their models and concepts.
After the presentation she also get around the groups to give feedback to them and to discuss further their concepts.
She mentioned that students should concentrate on materiality and cost of the design and advise them to put some colour on the design since it is for artists and it needs to be creative!
Great work from all benchworkers. Simi seemed to like all of the preliminary ideas. Keep up the hard work! Almost there!
