Today was a day of intense production in the studio, with the students getting involved in the making of the actual installation that will be displayed at the Whitworth. Inspired by the monochrome imagery, drawing techniques and scale of Deanna Petherbridge's work, the students embarked on a drawing exercise that would necessitate the entirety of the workspace and a lot of creative imagination. The installation is built around the theme of change, particularly focusing on the drastic regeneration of Manchester.
Posted 29 Mar 2017 23:46
Once the structure was up, we coordinated spaces for mounting our artwork and adding a vaiety of materials to the structure. We also started to paint it for more more visual effect. Here it is disassembled, we can't wait to construct it on site tomorrow!!
Posted 29 Mar 2017 22:55
In the afternoon, we managed to complete all the joints and tried constructing the installation in studio to see if it stand up and give us an idea on the scale of our design.
Posted 29 Mar 2017 22:52
Spray painting our mount boards to bring colour to our installation! It is coming together really well.

Day 4

Group 1 laser cut drawing preparation. we started preparing the model from one single beam construction details, then we designed the joints between floor boards and beams, roof panels and beams.
Posted 29 Mar 2017 21:52
Group 1 design process, y1 and y2 students made a detailed sketch up model to test all the joints. We also discussed how to join to modular unit together to avoid a double beam in the middle of the room We chose flexible joint for the beam, which could be removed easily. Day 8:

Once all required components had be cut and lap joints completed, the assembly of the main structural frames could begin with all hands needed to sand, shape and assemble the pieces.
Posted 29 Mar 2017 20:22
On Tuesday the group started prototyping models for the installation. They explored the use of tracing paper further within the space under the stairs and developed a method for attaching the sheets.

Whilst this was going on, the others were producing the drawing package and pulling together a presentation ready for the presentation to the Whitworth on Friday.

Our feedback from last week was to try and do a dry joint in the tripod stool. That means working the timber to make the fit as perfect as possible, otherwise it'll fall apart. Wait and see the finished thing!
