Coach screws - removable fixing to attach the 'wings'
Posted 25 Apr 2018 15:56
Now we're having a question time- what do the policy makers think of our academic ideas, and what do the academics have to ask the policy makers? We've had questions covering care homes, developers, the multi-generational household, cultural change, dementia friendly housing and quality of architecture in different parts of the country. Now to the undergraduate students, what questions do they have?

Starting the project with a magnificent tour of the Town hall led by Kevin Planit-IE. Learning about the history, architecture and current issues that are related to the town hall. For examples the stairs were used as heating cores with large heating pipes placed inside the staircase chambers in the basement.

We also started to look into any interesting details such as the beautiful mosaics above, this will later help student in the coming project.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX//
This is a great example of one students work who has taken the installation brief and altered the actual form of the partition in a way to suit the specific square she is designing for. Remember the template we have provided is just a guide of dimensions so it's great to think outside the box with your structure as long as the dimensions allow for people to walk through it.

INSTALLATION DESIGN PROCESS//
You have all shown some great design process today! Here is a good example of how you can take certain elements which interest you from within your square and then develop them into a design to suit the installation brief.

Us 5th years have learned a thing or two about 1:200 trees this morning. We have realised that our undergraduates are potentially better model makers than us.

In response to our trip to the Lake District, take a look at Hooke Park Rural studio. It is a designed as a place to think and create in the rural. Aspects enabling or restricting peoples ability to experience the rural is an important theme for our event. As the urban environment becomes more and more ubiquitous, places like Hooke Park become more and more important....

DAY 6: Looking into the main canopy's design. Working to solve problems through the detailing of the structure.
Posted 25 Apr 2018 15:08
We've heard lots of short presentations from our collaborators on their really interesting and insightful research and why they are interested in housing for older people. There's a consensus that housing for older people hasn't been given enough thought, and it's good to hear that other Universities have been researching this in collaboration with architectural practices.
Posted 25 Apr 2018 15:08
DAY 6: A really productive morning of planning the site model. After a few issues with it yesterday, both first and second years have really collaborated well today to ensure that it will serve a good purpose, and primarily look good to host our proposals to show the client.

Hi guys!

Just a quick reminder for tomorrow!! Get ready for an exciting model making day!! Bring materials, cutters and glues!

DAY//6

Students have been working on their final design looking into the final details regarding connections, materials and cost. They focused on preparing the files for the models that they will present to our collaborator on Monday!

There will be models in 1:5, 1:10 as well as 1:1 connection parts!

Looking forward to an exciting model making day!!

DAY 6

Students focused on finalising their idea and prepare their files for the last models that will present in Luna, in 1:5 or 1:10 as well as 1:1 connection detail.

They have also started preparing their booklet considering the construction process of their design proposals.

Well done guys! Tomorrow will be a great day. Model making day!!

#TEXTURES

This afternoon the students are continuing to construct their 1:1 interventions. One group is experimenting with making textured tiles to form paving for the site.

DAY 5// FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

GROUP A
This group came up with the idea to make a compact box that can be pulled out revealing a number of tables to be used. The challenge that comes with that is the type of joints that they will use. The sketch shows the development of the joinery being considered and those that can be used for the project!
Posted 25 Apr 2018 14:37
Finally we started to put all the tubes together! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
Posted 25 Apr 2018 14:26
The structure fully assembled on site - ahead of a check from the structural engineers!
Posted 25 Apr 2018 14:23
DAY 5// DETAIL DEVELOPMENT

GROUP C
This group utilises slits and slots all across the furniture piece. Coming up with the idea is the easy bit, figuring where the slits to be is the hard part! The sketches shows certain considerations that they need to take into account as to prevent the furniture from toppling.

DAY 5// DETAIL DEVELOPMENT

GROUP B:
In order to make the bench work, this group has drawn up a mock-up detail of the joints. In this group they have decided to use a rod and hole system whereby the holes are created all across the structure of the table allowing for flexible heights of the tables!

The final structural component (timber bracing) is being fitted. Hopefully with all of the decretive elements and roof it will start to come to life.
Posted 25 Apr 2018 14:16
The coach screws that fix the stud 'wings' to the pallet base line up perfectly.
Posted 25 Apr 2018 14:15
All components are now on site and we are waiting for our collaborators to arrive so they can watch how it is assembled.

The first of our three big events during this week has kicked off!
We're hosting an academic round table, discussing with 13 academics and policy makers in Greater Manchester the work we've been doing on housing for older people, and their experience of the dynamic between researchers and policy makers...

The Soapbox is being transported over to site before the engineers come and inspect in later on today. The structure is complete so if everything goes as planned we can start adding the decorative elements that our design team have been working on.

The option of having the communal areas and circulation space situated around the main atrium of the tower seems to be the best option for this project.

Group 3 will continue to develop this idea today ready to present to Pozzoni Architects tomorrow.

Let's see what they think!

Posted 25 Apr 2018 13:08
Group 3 have been developing the circulation for their scheme, trying to find out which arrangement will work best in relation to the large atrium space.

They have decided to use Owens Park Tower as accommodation for residents with staff and students located in the adjoining block.

DAY 6//
Progress was made today on the partitions with the installation group finalising their designs for each square. Tomorrow you will be making your 1:100 installation models to go onto the site model, which was also completed today. Please bring with you any equipment and materials you will be needing in order to produce your models. It would be nice to use the partitions as a way to bring more colour into the model and the square so think of some creative ways to do this. Remember you can chose your own materials for the installation so try to make it stand out! Looking forward to seeing the final versions tomorrow!

#LIGHTWEIGHT

We are encouraging the students to build their interventions out of materials that can be easily transported to and from Paradise Works. This makes it possible for them to begin the construction process on site before arriving at Paradise Works.

DAY 5//
Today everyone worked collectively on the site model which is coming along nicely. The model of the Town Hall is almost complete along with the monuments in the square itself. Tomorrow we will go back to working in two groups with the installation group finalising their partition designs.

#PARTOFAWHOLE

First, the students spent a day designing and testing their intervention through sketching and model making. Next, they identified which part of their intervention they would build at 1:1 for the final exhibition and got to work!

This design for a bug and bird hotel has been designed based on the work of artist, James Ackerley. The students are building the bird feeders that would make up the intervention.

#EXTENSION

Yesterday we visited the Manchester Art Gallery. As well as observing the architecture of the extension, which combines old and new, we also observed the extension of the body.

Much of the work on show represents figures and how the body interacts with others. This is something the first and second years may choose to move forward in their own designs.

To my surprise, there are plenty of interesting facts about Manchester like, why worker bee is a symbol of Manchester, and why there's a huge Vimto monument commemorated in North Campus and the existence "The Six Apple Trees", the scions of the tree at Grantham under which Sir Isaac Newton is reputed to have conceived his Theory of Gravitation.
