DAY//9

And the winner is.......team STACKED!

After discussion our collaborators chose team's 'stacked' design as it was very flexible and customisable! Our collaborators are planning to make a sample of the design by the end of May!

PRESENTATION DAY!

Today it was the final presentation to our collaborators Vicky and Simi from Luna. Students presented their final models and booklet explaining their design process, materiality, connections and cost.

Simi and Vicky were very impressed of all the designs and had a hard time picking the winner!

COLLABORATOR FEEDBACK//
Today our collaborator Kevin came along to have a look at the work produced by the group so far. He praised the accuracy of our site model and stated that he was very impressed with the quality of work. We are likely to donate the site model to the project team after our exhibition in university.

DAY//8

Today was the last working day before the presentation on Monday! Students were working on the final touches on their models at the wood workshop as well as at the studio space. Other members of the teams were working on finalising their construction booklets in order to make it as detailed as possible.

Can't wait for the presentation!!

DAY 9

After students' presentations and Luna's decision for the winner we spent sometime with students to present them our work from 3rd year undergraduate course. This was a small introduction to students for the following years as well as the expectations for a 3rd year student in architecture.

DAY 9!

Members of the group "STACKED" cannot hide their excitement after the announcement of the competition winner!

Excellent work!!!

DAY 9

Final presentation day!
Students presented their final design supported with models and a construction manual to our event collaborators Simi and Vicky. They explained their design approach in depth to them and describe how the workspaces can be assembled and disassembled easily taking only a few minutes. (Luna's requirement for the design).

After the presentation Vicky and Simi took some time to analyse the designs and conclude to the one that fulfils the most their requirements. It wasn't an easy decision because as they have explained all of them have been really good and students spend a lot of time on them. But they have concluded to team "Stacked", a design proposal that was clever and enjoyable, as well as constructed easily using re-usable materials.

Today we are working on our teams final preparations ahead of tomorrow’s presentations to our collaborator!

As part of the submission, Group 3 have started re-collaging their response to the Merz art movement and the brief which just so happens to be a toilet seat, questioning what is art and the resourcefulness of unorthodox materials.

Enjoy

Interview done. Another part of the video completed. Brilliant to get the insight of our artistic collaborator, Tom Brown, who has been kind enough to give up his time to work with the students during Events. Discussing how he started, what his inspires him and how he has found working with us all.

Cannot thank him enough for all his help during this project!

DAY//8 |FINAL OUTPUTS

Now that we are heading towards the finishing stage of Events 2018, the 5th years decided to check in on the student works just to guide them in completing their Construction booklets that will be submitted to LUNA on Monday after their presentations. The students had a few issues regarding expressing their designs through the booklets. So we had a sit down with each group and worked on their outputs together.

It felt really good to see some distinct ideas not only in terms of the designs but also in every groups representation of their works.... Good Job guys!!!

#INTHEMAKING

Another re-discovered snapshot of some focused work. Incredible patience proven by all the teams cutting out all the little bits and pieces and working on everything as long as it took to actually create the interventions for the site.

TEAMWORK

Everything that was created would not have been able without the incredible teamwork within the teams that were formed in the first week of the program. It was interesting to see how the dynamics evolved and everybody grew closer – not only within the small teams but also the whole group.

#PROGRESS

The most crazy thing to see was how all the sketches and little bits and pieces turned into one large 1:1 intervention that could be potentially used, in form, for the site.

#RECAP

At the end of the week it was time for us to recap the week, muck out the images we’ve taken and get some undergrad feedback on the first video attempt. It has been two busy but productive weeks with a lot of firsts not only for the first and second years but also for us! Flicking through the snapshots of the work in progress makes us even more curious about what all the work is going to look like assembled at one space in paradise works.

Since hosting the charrette the team have been receiving some fantastic feedback from staff and students alike across the 13 northern schools of architecture who joined us on the day. The team have sought to gain a wider social reach through sharing posts and updates on social media- even catching the eye of RIBA President Ben Derbyshire who was 'super impressed' with the Northern Soul Charrette!

Tomorrow is the final presentation of students to our collaborator Luna. They will present their final idea to Luna along with their final models and a construction booklet.

After the presentation Vicky and Simi from Luna will have a discussion on the designs and decide the one that fulfils their requirements the most. On the same day we will announce to students the winner. Luna will have the construction booklet of the winning design and once they get their funding they will be able to construct the work space by following the instructions in the construction manual!

Almost there!

DAY 08// Visualise, draw, make! Day 08 consisted of a lot of drawing, testing and refining which was then translated onto a 1:20 model of the proposal. All students took on board previous feedback from the client and fifth year students and through critical thinking managed to solve many design problems. Not being resistant to criticism is always a challenge but once you learn to take both positive and negative feedback on board you can reflect and design better, which is something all BA students learned during this event.

As the week has continued on site, the återvinna team and the welcome centre community have continued to build a relationship we hope will continue long after the build is over.

We have been; treated to some brilliant food produced within their grounds, given guided tours of the chicken coupe and vegetable sheds, and even had our portraits painted by one of the locals. And this is to name just a few!

We cant thank the centre enough for offering an experience to the team not only focused around construction project and hope the diverse nature of the centre's activities have been as inspiring to the students as they have to us!
Posted 28 Apr 2018 20:08
Its been a tough week for all our students, constantly exposed to undesirable weather conditions. Nevertheless, we have continued to be impressed by there efforts to complete construction, with work completed on Friday exceeding that of the proposed schedule.

Similarly, as the prototype has continued to progress, many of the community members have expressed considerable interest in our chosen construction method. The project begun as a manual that could enable individuals to do so and it is a pleasure to witness the real world applications unfold.
