DAY 2

Our second day was walking around Hulme with Kelzo, a local graffiti artist, who led us on a walking tour around places of interest in Hulme. After lunch, we then took our ideas for filming to the drawing board and presented them to the rest of the group.
Posted 18 May 2015 11:33
We then split up into smaller groups and forwarded our narrative, so we tried to join his paintings and trace a common circulatory pattern over it

Day 5

Today, we had a visit from from Polly Bentham from the Save the Cornerhouse Campaign. She talked about their efforts to save the Cornerhouse from demolition after it was relocated to HOME, further down Whitworth St West. After listening to what the group are trying to do, we took it in turns to pitch our ideas to her, and receive feedback on them to help develop them further. We then carried on refining our ideas and producing our sheets for the presentation on the 22nd.

We wanted our floors to be corbusier's paintings as we were designing alsmost a 'Corb Museum'
Posted 18 May 2015 10:56
We then made a test model of how we want our model to stand up
Posted 18 May 2015 10:55
We wanted to test out some materials for our scheme and see what would suit our design the most, so the above picture shows some test maquettes
Posted 18 May 2015 10:54
Once we had chosen a concept design, I 3d modelled it and had a go at creating some perspectives to have an idea of how it would look like.
Posted 18 May 2015 10:52
Day 2,

We looked at Le Corbusier's Paintings and concluded the one we would like to use... my group decided on the one with the most prominent black lines.

Day 2,

The second session we brought materials to create test models, so we can experiment on different materials to see which ones work well together and compliment each other. We also went on to Painting the different levels of our facade.. which did not end up being used since we were all reshuffled and sub divided into smaller groups. but we begun to understand the project much more...

Started working on the basic working of our design today. Deciding we wanted to be ambitious and work in one big group. Noted down all the things that we found were not working on site and compared it to the more successful all saints park.

We chose to use mainly recycled materials for our design, deciding on old pallets and plastic bottles.

Posted 18 May 2015 10:33
Day 1 - Today we spent an hour on site, coming to the conclusion that as a space for public gathering it is overtly unsuccessful. There was a distinct lack of shade or shelter and the space is barren, with know obvious or successful attempts at getting people to stay and not simply wander through.
Posted 18 May 2015 10:32
Day 1
Research into the past of Clayton, an area of East Manchester which saw a large amount of houses demolished for regeneration. However much of the space where there was housing is now left empty.
Posted 18 May 2015 10:21
Saturday at Chorlton Arts Festival. We spent the afternoon sketching with some urban sketchers again. After a few hours we prepared an exhibition by hanging our sketches with some thread around a sculpture we prepared with boxes. We had some trouble because there was a lot of wind but we finally managed to make it stand up.
Posted 18 May 2015 10:13
Day 5, draw and cut the cardboards. Thick cardboards were chosen as the material for our playful furniture. :)
Posted 18 May 2015 10:10
Day 3 (Group 15 Tan Zhi Jie)
We joined the Manchester Urban Sketchers for the sketching session of Whitworth Art Gallery. We interviewed some of the sketchers regarding their experience on sketching. Those tips are really beneficial and vital. A group sharing session was carried out in the end of the day.
Posted 16 May 2015 02:58
Day 2 (Group 15 Tan Zhi Jie)
Second sketching session took place at Piccadilly Gardens and the shopping mall Arndale. We also learnt how to sketch the essence of each building by doing sketch within 15 seconds.

Day 1 (Group 15 Tan Zhi Jie)
We were introduced to the event Sketchfest. Hakym briefed us about the event schedule. We did our very first sketching session at the Central Library and the Town Hall.

With the support of Hendo Technology, the hover board is not a imagination anymore. When we talk about magnetic levitation, the easiest way is to use two permanent and strong magnets to repel each other to achieve a simple object that floats. It all sounds very simple and feasible until Earnshaw's Theorem comes in. It states that when two strong permanent magnets are repelling each other, one of the magnet will then flip and attracts to the other one, no matter the size of the magnets, given an amount of time. Hendo's technology then decided to use the simple theory of Lenz's Law to create its own magnetic field and uses the Magnetic Field Architecture (MFA) to concentrate and generating stronger magnetic field to sustain human weights. The only problem is that it can only levitate over copper and aluminium surfaces since the Earth's magnetic field itself is still too weak. With the latest proposal of Floating City, I believe we are able to install our own magnetic field in the sky by then. And with this technology, I believe that hovering transportation is not just a dream anymore.

i grew up loving colours, even though i quite dislike the colours of those hangers. I must say with the right effects, the partition looks pretty decent
Posted 16 May 2015 01:07
Given the knowledge that the Earth might be covered in water in 100 years and because of urbanization due to population growth, I would imagine people of the future will start living in the sky.

Scenario:
With the rise of the amount of Methane, Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide in the air, the future of the Earth in 100 years doesn't seem very optimistic. World leaders are finding a solution to generate more energy rather than fuel and coal, but bearing in mind that mother nature is always ahead of us. Here's the question: Will the Earth still it be the same in 100 years?
By 2030, our population will hit 8 billion people, reservoir starts to evaporate and food rationing will begin due to not enough clean water.
By 2070, sea level will increase significantly due to the meltdown of Greenland, causing the remapping of Earth's surfaces. Cities start to drown.
By 2080, virus starts to breakthrough and causing death to human without proper meal and clean water. Population slides down to 4.8 billion people.
By 2115, which is the agenda's target, the civil society depletes and human will go back to the dark ages, fighting for food, for energy, for clean water, for what is left.

Today we presented our proposals for the refurbishment of the z arts gallery space. The use of models proved to be especially helpful when pitching to the client as it allowed him to visualise and understand our concepts much more successfully. The proposals which included models seemed to have much more impact and stir more enthusiasm in the client compared with those which didn't, showing just how crucial models can be in developing and communicating an idea.

The Real Ale Trail-

"The Transpennine Real Ale Trail is a unique voyage to a selection of Yorkshire and Lancashires best real ale pubs - on a train! All the pubs are within a stones throw of their respective Railway Stations, so finding your way there (and back) couldn't be easier."

The addition of Oxford road station would increase people coming through Manchester, which is one of the main reasons for the closure of the corner house and redevelopment of the area
Posted 15 May 2015 21:18
Today we attempted to make a stained glass window plate.
Posted 15 May 2015 21:11
Day Five (15th): Morning

Presented proposal to Polly Bentham- a key figure in the 'save oxford road campaign'. She reacted really positively to the scheme. Prior to presenting she talked about how it was unlikely that any proposal that acted as a threat to home(the new corner house) would not be considered by the developers, however, if it somehow complimented the new venue it was likely to succeed. To progress the brewery design I came up with the idea of a special corner house beer- which would be solely distributed to home, and similarly each of the surrounding pubs could have their own too. Visitors to the brewery would be directed to home, and understand the relationship between the brewery and the new cinema- which would increase popularity for both.

Day Four: Morning

Presentation poster by myself and Florence. Used the Guinness factory/ storehouse as a precedent- similar scheme of re-approprating space, both informative and industry focused.
Posted 15 May 2015 20:55
Today, Polly Bentham came in to talk to us abut her 'Save Oxford Road Corner' campaign. She spoke about the issues her and her team have faced, and helped answer any questions we had. We then spoke briefly about our ideas, and discussed how they could help raise awareness of her campaign. She also helped with the development of our proposals by providing some information we were unaware of, and provided some suggestions for some of our projects.

Day 4- Through diagramming the procession through the church this led to the idea of having a greater density of mass of the material in the less used areas. Then through a number of maquettes we decided on a string pattern to help with creating the weaved density of material, it also allowed us to apprehend the atmosphere and lighting created by it.
