Notes made during the MERZ Barn Tour, Kurt Schwitters influence by the likes of El Lissitzky and Van Doesburg ~ his pure abstraction of lines and colors meant to represent these utopian ideals of this harmonious society.

Kurt Schwitters, a German artist that worked in many medias.

Everything had broken down and new things had to be made out of the fragments; and this is Merz - Kurt Schwitters

DAY THREE // Today, we participated in a workshop run by NAVARS. After explaining the basics of different sound editing software, we were able to edit our recorded sounds using Reaper. This allowed us to create different soundtracks for our Multi-Sensory Installation.

Today, after discussions with one of the leaders of the Cornerhouse protection campaign, we have decided to go forward with our idea of a projection installation. Myself, and Laura, wish to draw attention to the character and warmth that the Cornerhouse had with its previous program by keeping the current state of the building and adding an exhibition of projections within the rooms that show images and videos of the building when it was in use (such as with the precedent image attached to this blog post). On the exterior of the building we will also show images of the building deteriorating and being demolished to show the people of Manchester what could happen to the loved building. This installation will hopefully show the lack of character of the new HOME building and potentially restore the Cornerhouse to its previous program and glory.

Day Four

Presentation from Polly Bentham of the 'Save Oxford Road Corner' campaign followed by a discussion of our own proposals. This led to a conversation around how our own work can help raise awareness of the campaign through capturing imaginations.

On the first day, we were briefed on the aims for SketchFest Manchester 2015.We are to participate in sketching workshops with the end result being an exhibition curated by the group in the Northern Quarter next week. We ventured to Central Library to participate in our first sketching workshop; and captured the infrastructure from the Library entrance to Albert Square. I found capturing the movement and ambiance of the city challenging, especially considering the time restraint placed on us. A useful technique I learnt was using a horizon line to ensure that the figures in the sketch were in perspective.

We had a couple of objectives to complete today. The first one was making or finding some sort of animation software which interacts with real-time videos. In the image I have shown the software that we have found and how it interacts with use in the real-time video.

For my research for modern transportation systems in futuristic cities I watched iRobot and Minority Report.
Both these films use the automatic driving systems which is what I am aiming for in my scenario.
Segregation between manually driven cars and automatically driven cars is what i have taken from these films. The automatic cars will be elevated above the normal traffic

Day 2, today we have divided into small groups and developed our design further based on yesterdays idea.
Posted 15 May 2015 03:34
mark was angry with this, as you can see, the dimensions aren't exactly right. but i think that we should always make the best of what we have. I think it looks great. and the different levels makes the whole thing that extra bit interesting.
Posted 15 May 2015 02:49
we used the chairs to make shelves, and now we have no chairs to put in the room. ironic, ha?
we might have to borrow some chairs, so if you have some, let us know. kinda fits in with the whole "borrowers" theme. I like that.
Posted 15 May 2015 02:46
probably my favourite thing in the room. i love plants and i hate plastic bottles. yes, one more thing that is actually recycled.
I do love it, shame that i cant drill in my room.
Posted 15 May 2015 02:44
my first thoughts were, "nothing is really recycled in this room". but then comes ghada, and now we have a chair/desk asda cart. pretty creative i'd say. and very much recycled. not sure if comfortable, but definitely innovative.
Posted 15 May 2015 02:42
a more technical approach to the making of the base. definitely more sound and more stable. the cad file is currently in the metal workshop. as we await the manufacture of the base. I have hope for this one, maybe the 5th attempt won't be a fail after all.
Posted 15 May 2015 02:39
another shape, perhaps more stable. we never got to found out. the base is still too ugly, and colours are too bright for my taste. but still interesting.
Posted 15 May 2015 02:36
5 colours. 2000 hangers and 2 partitions.
second attempt at making the partition stable. a failed attempt
Posted 15 May 2015 02:34
more comfortable than it actually looks. way more comfortable

Our group met on day four in order to finalize the idea we agreed on in the previous meetings. We started researching all the necessary images for our project and the actual methods needed to implement everything.
Posted 15 May 2015 02:25
The first day of events began with a rainy Manchester and a surprisingly sunny Liverpool. We started off by visiting St. Luke's Church, our site and spending about an hour taking pictures, sketching and diagramming. Then we headed off to the RIBA Stirling Prize winner of 2014, the Everyman Theatre, where we had coffee and got briefed on our project. This was followed by a visit to the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, which was an absolute spectacle. I had never seen anything like that before. After spending some time admiring the revolutionary architecture of the cathedral, we came out, still stunned by its sheer presence, and headed off in search for a place to have lunch in. The end of lunch also marked the end of the fun and refreshing journey as we broke off and went our own ways.
Posted 15 May 2015 00:31
For day four, we had a morning of sanding the rough surfaces of the wood tables. There were newly 'borrowed' wood pieces giving the ladder shelf a new look with a better function.
Posted 14 May 2015 23:57
The Borrowers session plan. Everything seems to be in the right track!

Have a go to create the single transport in the future..

This kind of car has two modes. It can fly in the air powered by the special handled fire, which has quite high speed. Once the car is broke down or the driver is drunk, the car can change to the common mode by itself. Car will be on the ground and it can be drived by computer to safe place if the driver is drunk. In that case, no car will broke down in the air so that fewer traffic jams will turn up.
Posted 14 May 2015 23:51
After spending the whole morning reassembling our model, in the afternoon, we presented our final results and discussed our designs.
Posted 14 May 2015 23:45
Today we brought materials to create test models. Test models are to understand our material's strengths and weaknesses. We found our initial idea of stretched fabric for walls would look too sketchy, and so we tested more solid, common materials used for crafts.

In the first day of our 3D Graffiti Event we received the brief by the 5th years student and they show us examples of what is 3d projection mapping. At first they divide us in 3 groups and they told us that the following day we have to discuss about the site that we are going to use ,how to relate transgression architecture with our concept and how we are going to use the projector in our work.

Casting wax: wooden mould and wire mesh structure.
Posted 14 May 2015 22:49
Today we tested casting wax and painting wax onto a wire mesh structure. The casting didn't come out as we planned as some part of the wax stuck to the mould. Next time we will give more time for the wax to dry and find methods for it not to stick to the sides of the mould.

[Half-completed, stretched painting by Le Corbusier, acrylic on mounting board]

The symbol of modernism. A fascist, some have dubbed him. A living contradiction. Or perhaps, just a show off, this Le Corbusier. Yet who could deny the change he had inflicted in the world of architecture?
Posted 14 May 2015 22:10
Coming in on our day off, we decided to work together to develop our concept/design further and also we were assigned to the task of making the site model. So we were trying to figure out how to make the site model the best we could in the time given.
Posted 14 May 2015 22:04
The first years in the group were tasked with the design of the DJ's table, and we ended up with an asymmetrical wedge to fit into the corner of the pentagonal frame while leaving the DJ room to enter and exit easily.
Posted 14 May 2015 22:03
The day after the site visit, we split into four groups and started to create quick concept diagrams about how we saw the site being used. Whether it was a procession or a deconstruction route, each group had different and unique ideas which made it interesting.
Posted 14 May 2015 22:02
On the first day, we travelled to Liverpool and carried out some site analysis on St Luke church. We looked at how people used and treated the site and how the church fit in with the surrounding context. We took some photos, quick sketches and the picture below is the sketch up model of the site, something we used as a starting point in our memorial installation.

Day 4 - Discussions on working reconstructions
Posted 14 May 2015 20:54
A matte black blackboard paint is being painted onto the partitions so we can write on it. We taped around the corners to create a frame like shape on it and to ensure a neat finish.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:34
Today we made the first element of our main course and got to grips with cooking equipment and techniques, with help from all the kitchen staff. The output of today was a ratatouille dish.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:25
We also decided to try a new method and started to experiment with melting the wax. We melted tea lights over a metal tube to see how the wax would flow and move naturally.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:24
Day 02: Today we started working on different ways to create curved walls for our building. We used a plethora of materials and techniques. Then we split to 3 different groups to discuss how to design our own interpretation of the idea. We decided to find a word that describes Le Corbusier and use is as a starting point of our design. Tomorrow we will present the ideas and further develop our concept.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:16
Day 4. Painting the wooden partitions in matte black so that it can be used as a blackboard.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:15
Here we are discussing the issue we could raise and how to convey the message. We got together and continued the project.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:13
Planning the panels according to the area we have chosen to project our idea.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:11
Day 4
A mock up of our final output - a 3 dimensional puzzle made up of the different communities in East Manchester, each piece stained differently. The black space signifies the void in the area and the councils unwanted interventions. We feel it necessary to show the canals in our puzzle because not only does it give some geographical reference but it is the reason this area was chosen for development as land value increases if there is water near by.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:08
Day 3 - We had to display our analysis of the site then our proposals for the site. Within our group we had the ideas of re creating the bomb:
1- By hanging objects of the ruined church off a steel truss system
2- Exploded objects out laid through out the church (^Above)
3- A protective net/web that creates a protective wrap around the church (chosen one)
Posted 14 May 2015 20:04
Today we experimented by pouring more wax over an existing model. This created a cave like space. We will try to explore this method more in the next session and include it in our final model.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:04
Day 3
After choosing the site in day 1 and visiting it in day 2, in day 3 we have decided what would the final output will be which is a photo collage of people and buildings of the area. so this image shows the begining of the process and we are experimenting with different photos that we took from the site.
Posted 14 May 2015 19:38
As our ideas coalesced into a single theme, the specific necessities of the site became more and more obvious. We had an idea of the size of the space we required and the nature of circulation around it, the number of routes into the space and the number of people likely to use it. In this way we systematically eliminated sites until we were left with our chosen space on the third floor.
Posted 14 May 2015 18:54
Day 4 - We were working on the Model for the whole day and we are nearly done. We had a short presentation with Proff Tom Jefferies and Harald, and they suggested us to play with the patterns by breaking it and reconstruct it until the point we can't proceed.
Posted 14 May 2015 18:53
Day 2 & 3- We got all the pieces cut out and sprayed paint it. We had discussed our rough idea with Harold.
Posted 14 May 2015 18:48
We spent a while in our sub groups collaborating and combining ideas through sketches and diagrams and explaining our modes of thought to one another. Having settled on a few more completed ideas that effectively utilised site and conveyed the theme; we presented to the rest of the group.
Posted 14 May 2015 18:41
Day 1- Introduction. I was placed in the Reason group.
Posted 14 May 2015 18:41
On the second day we met up as a group and discussed our ideas, narrowing down our concept and decided what we wanted to project and where. We then pitched this idea to the rest of our event group and event leaders for some useful feedback.
