The final build of the 1:1 booth, complete with the DJ table. For Pangaea festival a UV light will be used to illuminate the string structure.
Posted 22 May 2015 01:18
For the final build we started off by constructing the pentagon frames together and then weaving the string in for the parabolic curve effect. We then attached the frames together and cladded the structure in translucent plastic. By assigning tasks we managed to work well as a group which made the process quicker.
Posted 22 May 2015 01:05
After completing the 1:10 physical model we had to spend time researching materials we could use for the final build which proved to be difficult since we had to take into account the budget we had been given. The design of the DJ table had been finalised and a rough plan was drawn up in order for the construction process to run as efficiently as possible.
Posted 22 May 2015 00:33
We developed the chosen idea by combining aspects of other pitches to produce the final design of parabolic curves in multiple pentagon frames, with the string being lit up by UV light. In order to gain an understanding of the scale and construction of the design we built a 1:10 physical model. This process was useful since the technical problems we came across when building this model meant that we could resolve these earlier and reduce time when coming to build the final model at 1:1.
Posted 22 May 2015 00:16
The next part of the process was for all of us to present our concepts and models to the Pangaea committee and workshop technicians, as well as answering their questions regarding cost, time and construction details. The panel concluded that the chosen idea to be put forward for development was the parabolic curve concept pitched by James Nutt.
Posted 21 May 2015 23:47
On the first day we got into groups and came up with initial ideas for the DJ booth. Our initial concept came from modelling geodesic domes and cutting panels out in order to translate the form into an enclosure. We continued to develop this idea by cutting voids and placing a translucent material underneath in order to mimic a fabric tension structure.
Posted 21 May 2015 21:36
Day 8, part 2. The first day away from the workshop, piecing together and bolting up our beautifully crafted pentagons. Let the stringing begin and the design unfold.
Posted 21 May 2015 20:23
Day 8. Stings strings strings, how you created nightmares with your nots.
Posted 21 May 2015 20:20
Day 7. With the wood sheets arriving we were able to start the production of our DJ booth. Shapes were cut out using the CNC machine and sanded and finished in the workshop. Issues with pieces fitting together and hole sizing arose, but we were able to resolve them in the workshop.
Posted 21 May 2015 20:19
Day 5. Now that we have a final design, its onto the details and construction timetabling to make sure the build runs as smoothly as possible. Four large structural pentagons and purlins acted as the fame, with plastic sheeting as the waterproof cladding. Three inner pentagons included holes to enable us to string the white rope within, creating the wormhole effect.
Posted 21 May 2015 20:12
Day 4, part 2. The final design incorporates uv string which we intend to light up using black lights in order to produce a wormhole like effect. This was inspired by one of our first design proposals, an infinity mirror. By editing the photo I am able to produce a more realistic visual of to how it will be seen on the night.
Posted 21 May 2015 20:02
The final 1:1 DJ booth constructed in the open studio on the eight floor. Through the test build we discovered a couple of issues such as the frame swaying laterally. To combat this we added extra bracing between the structural pentagons. We also built a DJ table to fit exactly within the front space of the booth since the strings and pentagons create a lot of spacial constrictions and requirements.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:54
Day 4. Model making time. As a team of 3 we built a 1:10 model of our final design.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:53
Day 3. Feed back from the panel after our presentations was to combine 3 of the proposals, the use of pentagon shapes from our geodesic dome idea, the shed like structure from another and the use of strings to create parabolic forms from the 3rd.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:50
After we had threaded the three full size pentagons we layered them against each other just to check for scale and that the DJ would be able to move freely and comfortably inside the space left in between
Posted 21 May 2015 19:50
This is the full scale first pentagon just after it had finished being threaded. The process was very slow initially but we became a lot faster with practice and hopefully the final build for the festival should be much faster than our initial build.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:49
Day 2. Presentation day to the client. We presented our 8 different proposals to a panel made up of people from the SU, Pangaea committee, 5th year architect students and Jim and Scott From the workshop.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:47
The proposal that was decided on had the loose theme of tension strings surrounding the DJ creating a permeable membrane. We then developed this idea until we had a final design made up of strings threaded between structural pentagons. This is the 1:10 model in development, testing the arrangements of the strings.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:46
My favourite proposal for the DJ booth was by Arjun Mistry and consisted of several infinity mirrors surrounding the DJ. To test the theory behind the mirrors Arjun made a scaled down version from mirrored acetate, LED fairy lights and wood. Unfortunately the proposal was too expensive for our budget so we had to focus on other proposals.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:44
Day 1. Using initial ideas to create and design our first set of proposals. As a group of three we looked at geodesic domes, using models to develop our idea. We experimented with shape and materials, for example looking at combining material and frame and the effect it created once lit up.

Second week- Sanding job
Posted 21 May 2015 19:37
To approach the design problem we separated into small teams and created some initial ideas. We created several sketch geodesic domes, then deconstructed them in various ways to experiment with the different shapes that could be created and how the DJ could interact with both the space and the crowd.
