Double Take Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum Visit:

Investigation of museum and gallery displays to get the thought process going. Double takers were asked to choose one display they found interesting, and consider its contextual and environmental effectiveness, or lack thereof..

Day one: Chocolate crispy cakes / Marshmallow squares // Museum Visits

Double takers will investigate artifacts in the MMU special collections, then split into five groups, they will choose one artwork from a selection of five, and one site from either John Dalton, Mabel Tylecote or the Brooks building, then design and build a vessel/plinth/housing to best show off the artifact in its context.

Meanwhile the fifth years have to bring in home baked cakes on each given day, as a form of mild bribery.

The first day of the Events started with research into CPO sites in East manchester. My group discovered an area on Eccleshall Road which had four remaining houses that protested against their demolition, creating an eery scene. To further our research into Clayton, we went to the central library to look into Manchester's archives.

On Monday we looked for possible CPO sites for our responses. My group chose the area, Clayton. Here we found a place called the Lost Street which only has 4 houses on it. The whole area seems barren and much like a waste land. We then went to the Central Library to further explore the history of the site and find starting points for our response piece. The idea of chemical corrosion and industrial focal points seem interesting.

Exploded Isometric of DJ Booth Proposal
Posted 12 May 2015 11:25
After laser cutting, the discussions on design begin. How do you redesign, re-work, appropriate something that existed in the past? Using Wittgenstein's areas of study the students will work up new iterations of the hut!

Day_01

We looked at a series of case studies which examined the different methods of reusing a site. These methods were divided into three categories: Intervention, Insertion and installation.

In small groups we researched individual case studies. My group looked at the Lullaby Factory at the Great Ormond Street Hospital- an installation by Studio Weave.

Believe it or not, wheelbarrow chair can be quite comfortable. We'll put one or two at our school's end-of-year exhibition, so everyone can try sitting in it.

Day 1
On our first day, we visited the Z-Arts Gallery and the Creative Development Manager took us on a tour around all the rooms in the gallery. She explained to us the activities that take place in the gallery and what we are required to do on the provided space to us.
Posted 12 May 2015 00:26
First day of event went very well. 1st and 2nd year students were divided into groups to fulfill the task of building furniture with re-purpose items. Drawings for each furniture have been provided to guide the process, however students are allowed to make changes to the design, construction method or the materials, in order to encourage creativity in them.

On our first day, we went on a site visit to the Z-Arts gallery. The manager of the Art gallery took us on a tour around the gallery and updated us on the history of the gallery and what they plan to do in the near future. It gave us an idea as to what is expected of us in these two weeks. We took a couple of pictures of which can be seen in the montage. As a group we measured the site and made a few diagrams.

We had real fun on Sunday at Ikea. Four trolleys full with thousands of hangers. Mark's blue car is certainly a tardis!

Day One

Tour of the Z-Arts Centre by Saskia Metcalf (Creative Development Manager)
Posted 11 May 2015 23:21
On the first day of our project we visited our site, Z - arts in Hulme, where we had a tour around the main facilities. We were introduced to the needs of the space from the creative arts director, a person who has worked there for a long time and has observed the space's functionality over time. We also talked about possible functions of the space and we discussed some first ideas about several spacial aspects that ought to be taken under consideration for the alternations that could be done in the redevelopment of the main room that we are assigned to work on. To begin with though, we measured the room with a tape measure, including the balcony, in order to be able to work further having a precise idea of the space. We also tried to diagram some crucial spatial aspects such as circulation and light. This is a photo of two members of my group measuring a surface!

Today in the introduction to our event we discussed the different types of re-use/rescue such as installation, insertion and intervention as discussed in 'Re-readings' by Sally Stone. In groups of 4's we then found case studies which showed one of these types of re-use/rescue. Our group picked Dresden's Military Museum which had a bold, politically motivated extension added (insertion). This was useful to begin thinking of different techniques we could use in our Cornerhouse projects.

Day 1
Our first day was spend doing research into CPO's in East Manchester. After an afternoon in the Central library we decided on the New Islington development designed by Urban Splash. Like many CPO's, a controversial project which at a glance looks to have left a hole in an East Manchester community.

Day 1 - Introduction with Prof Tom Jefferies & Harald Røstvik from Bergen School of Architecture.
Posted 11 May 2015 14:51
Once the grouped had a bit of a discussion we decided that we should all go away and come up with some ideas which we will then put together and look for the best one. We started to look at different structures or forms which we could make to project the image/video on to.
Posted 11 May 2015 12:35
Once we got to know the people who we had been grouped with we starting narrowing down what we had to do. We started looking for different areas/site we could use in Chatham. We came up with a few places which we could use. One of these places was the outdoor open space on the fourth floor.
Posted 11 May 2015 12:27
The first session was interesting in the sense that we got to grips with what we will be having to do over the next two week period. The more I learned about the project, the intrigued I became into seeing what the end product of the next couple weeks will be. The first plan of action was to split into small groups and start pitching ideas to each other.

We hope everyone has enjoyed the weekend after portfolio submission and is now excited about events! We will meet you on Monday at 10am in Chatham 714. As some of you already know, there was a slight change of plans and we are now working on a live project for the refurbishment of Z-Arts gallery space into a multi-functional children's area. We will discuss the brief together in the morning. Please bring tape measures, sketchbooks and pens as we are going on a site visit to the Z-Arts centre in Hulme in the afternoon.

Hey there Fooditects,

I hope you're looking forward to the events programme next week, it's going to be an interesting time exploring architecture through a totally different medium- food. We will be issuing the full brief and overview of the two weeks on Monday, but before that, it would be good if you can have a think about the following:

Select an architectural period (style) or design movement.

Examples include (but are not limited to):
- Modernism
- Post-modernism
- De-constructivism
- Structuralism (Archigram?)
- Neoclassicism
- Brutalism
- Gothic

Do some initial research on a particular architectural movement/style that you are interested in, and bring this along with you when you come on Monday(11th May). More details will be furnished to you then, so see you guys at 10am at Chatham 611.

Have a great weekend,
Team Fooditecture

In this, the first post on our Project/Project blog, we shall start as we mean to continue!

testing, testing, 1, 2, 3, testing...

Now that we've dispelled the myth that we will be treating this seriously; good meeting yesterday, don't panic if you weren't able to make it we will work hard over the next week to make sure we don't take it personally.

For now please can anyone who we didn't meet yesterday please email us at charles.s.butterwick@stu.mmu.ac.uk to gather your email addresses all in one place. I have also set Naysan and Luka to chase you up for them so there's no escape basically.

We will be sending out a group email in the next few days to reiterate the meeting and link you into the materials you'll need before we start this overly ambitious but massively fun project.

Hope you're as excited as we are!!!!!! (yawn)
