The Hydrocraft will be the main form of transport in the future. With it being powered by electicity stored in the fuel cell converted from hydrogen.

We were given a tour of Hulme by a graffiti artist named Kelzo who grew up in the Hulme crescents. He showed us different areas of Hulme along with images of what it looked like in the past.

DAY - 6
This was finishing off the wind chimes and continuing with the cutting out of the cardboard nets for the cubes. Fortunately it was a nice day and we were able to use the balcony on the 4th floor! The whole group was there and we worked together with a system that meant we got through the cutting asap.

Today was the Final Review and our last day of Events. We presented our schemes to three tutors, and to a lecture hall of our peers. It was an interesting experience, and we also got an opportunity to see the work of other groups.

When the foam had completely dried, we attempted to spray the entire model black but then we realised that the foam did not take the paint well and that we needed a better finish for the product. So we had the idea of using fabric to cover up the foam. This solution solved many problems, the fabric covered up the negative spaces between the foam and also provided a more comfortable backing for the user. The back board was covered in black paint, creating a nice contrast between the striking blue fabric.

In the future, because of the abundance of water, hydrogen will be the main source of energy. Fusion energy will also be sustainable. Electricity converted from hydorgen will be the main souce of power.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:46
Day 6 - 9 : After finalising our concept, we created a sketch up model to visualise our idea, then we experimented with breaking parts of the truss and made them all fall from an equal height to gain a jagged sky light pattern for the roof, this is used to express the narrative of 'fragments'.

Having met up to get to know each other and discuss the project, we visited the Hulme Hippodrome. It was interesting to listen to the history of the building which helped us understand the social conditions of Hulme during the time it was in use.

Day - 5
On the final day of the week me and Rosa began building the wind chimes that would be placed inside the sound boxes. The morning involved researching and designing the chimes, with the afternoon consisting of a metal workshop induction and the actual cutting and filing of the chimes themselves. This posed many problems but was quite therapeutic at the same time!

In the first days we had the opportunity to visit Hulme with a local graffiti based artist named Kelzo who showed us how the area has changed over time. It was really interesting to see that certain parts of Hulme keep alive the history that goes back to the crescents and the music festivals that took place there. The first picture was taken from where one of the blocks of flats used to be.

On Day 4 we had a visit from Polly Benthem, who is currently campaigning for ‘Save the Cornerhouse’. She explained what they are trying to achieve and her reasons for setting up the campaign. We then presented our ideas to her, after which she gave us feedback and ideas.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:39
Getting the right lighting was important to explore our concept of implementing the shadows into our design. We took over the 4th floor of the Benzie building to achieve this.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:39
On Day 3 we spent the day in a design workshop, refining and developing our ideas. This culminated in a brainstorm, before putting all of our ideas on paper.

At the end of the two week period of the Events this is our final model. These are photographs from different angles to demonstrate every detail and to show the plants inserted in the final model.

We began with a few concept sketches, exploring how the aesthetics of our design relate to the work of Le Corbusier. We opted for a tiered system, joining the plan with ramps to create a unified form, attempting to adopt Le Corbusier's 5 principles of architecture.

The inside of the car is minimalist to reduce ware and as this cars would be inconstant use this would help keep them clean and usable, the car itself has sliding doors on each side to allow easy access and would seat six people with ample room for any luggage.

On Day 2 we conducted a site visit to both Oxford Road Station and to the new Home Complex, to better understand the brief. We both thought that the new building has yet to develop any character, and is isolated from the cultural and cosmopolitan heart of Manchester. This inspired us to develop our ideas for the original site. Whilst on site we took photographs, sketched the areas of interest to us and diagrammed the flow of people through the site.

THOUGHT PROCESS OF HOW WE SHOULD REPRESENT DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE AREA. WE THOUGHT ABOUT HAVING DIFFERENT HEIGHTS OF BLOCKS FOR DIFFERENT LAYERS, LEAVING ALL THE BLOCKS IN THE SAME HEIGHT AND LIFTING UP THE CPO ED AREA WITH RODS.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:33
On Day 1 we were introduced to the project, and given an idea on how to tackle the tasks we were set. We started by doing some research into precedents and coming up with ideas. In our pair we decided early on to focus on the façade of the Cornerhouse, preserving it whilst doing something completely new with the interior of the building. We found a suitable precedent in the Museum of the Arts of Asturias by Franco Mangado, which has a similar mix of façade and modern interior.

On this day we visited the Manchester Library to do some historic research on Hulme. We were able to use the National Archives data base to source some very good information.

At this point Dylan and I began to work on a back up idea while Nick figured out the logistics of filming with a tilt shift lens and live streaming this footage through a projector adjacent to the site we were filming. After watching ’12 Angry Men’ we decided to try and change the way people viewed their environment. This would have come through a perspective warped photo on an unremarkable brick box in the northern quarter.

On a larger scale there would be a network of one way streets that would cross through the city allowing quick access to anywhere in the city, because there is no friction between the car and the road the cars can run at speeds around 250 mph, and due to the cars being self driving this can be done safely.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:26
Following discussion with other group members these ideas combined with ideas generated by watching ‘The Wings of Desire’. To become something surveillance based. We looked initially at phone boxes to see whether or not we could draw people in through calling them but the ring turned out to be too quiet.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:26
My mode of transport is a hovering car that is self driving, in the scenario no one would own a car, the car would be in constant motion working like a taxi and could be summoned with a smart phone like device. Once a car is requested the closest available free car would come and collect you and take you to the location requested through your smart phone.

One of the ways in which Gattaca expresses social hierarchies is through scale and level. In these concept diagrams I have looked at how similar effects could be achieved through the change in level on a street and the interaction between objects at different scales.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:23
Day 3: As our small group has been assigned the task of creating a physical site model, we spent the third day planning out the production. We have left our meeting with a clear idea of what scale we will create it in and what material. This process also involved laser cutting.
Image shows process between day 3 - 9.

Coloured water in each bottles will give a beautiful marbled effects inside the shelter when the sun shines through.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:23
As my scenario called for a mode of transport that needs fuel I started to look at methods to reduce the waited energy such as heat and noise, one way I found to do this is to use superconductive magnets to hover thus removing friction as a factor. I also looked at self driving cars as if human error could be removed from the cars accidents would be reduced, speed could be increased and the car would always be driving at its most efficient.

On day 5 we cut out all the pieces of the puzzle from MDF. We found the MDF boards from the leftovers in the workshop. However we wanted to make the pieces look neat and elegant, so we decided to cover the pieces in plywood. We had to cut the pieces again from plywood and stick them on top of the MDF. Then we sanded them together, so that both looked unified. Painting the shapes was left for the next day.

Posted 22 May 2015 13:20
The modernist architecture in Gattaca serves serves as a backdrop to the ideas of social hierarchy within the film itself. In a world where an outlying eyelash can have potential to ruin a man, the sterile, hard lines of modernism enforce the notion that to exist in this perpetual modernist concept one has to be more than human.

My scenario is that of an overpopulated world that is running low on both space and fuel, for these reasons the population of earth now lives in 4 super dense cities to free up land for the production of food and due to the limited fuel left on the planet low energy modes of transport are needed.
