Atelier: CPU

We then decided to use corbusier's rule of a ribbon window and continuing the idea of circulation, we designed a grey facade with primary coloured frames for the ribbon window
Posted 20 May 2015 15:24
We then used the spraypaint workshop to spray paint the extrusions grey to make it look more Corbusier Style
Posted 20 May 2015 15:22
We then decided to extrude lines as walls and since some of them were curved, we used heat guns to bend and curve sheets of plastic
Posted 20 May 2015 15:21
We then laser cut the bits that we want extruded from our paintings
Posted 20 May 2015 15:19
This is the box built up into the shape of the structure. the colored pieces create a landscape and the light creates an exploded painting when sourced within the cube.
Posted 20 May 2015 00:19
This is stage 2/3 of the painting stage. The cut out sections of the cube have been painted and the edges sanded so that the net cube can fold back into them, creating a painting when unfolded and a cube of light when it is not.
Posted 20 May 2015 00:18
We began to paint the design using the three primary colors. This is stage 1/3 in the painting sequence.
Posted 20 May 2015 00:16
The CAD model has been laser cut and checked that it works correctly. This project has been challenging due to using software and tools that we have not come across before, although stretching beyond our comfort zone and being successful has been worth the effort.
Posted 20 May 2015 00:13
On the second day we split up into 4 groups each making individual outcomes. My group discussed our ideas and decided that we were going to make a Le Corbusier "museum". We are extruding different shapes from his painting making Le Cornusier art into its building. Going backwards. Expressing La Cprbusier architecture through his art. On that day we decided on design of the "building", materials and sketched out all the extrudions.
Posted 19 May 2015 23:56
On the first day of a project we worked as a whole group discussing Our event as a whole and talking about different options/ideas what can be done over the next 2 weeks.

Day 3, Today we have come up with a story board and a sketchup model. The model has been exported to CAD file and is ready to be laser cut tomorrow.
Posted 19 May 2015 04:15
Having designed a cube to fold out into a net, we cut the cube from 3mm MDF using a laser cutter, unfortunately the net did not work as the cad file was incorrect. Knowing what caused the problem, and what could advance the design further, we took to Sketchup to create a detailed model of the cube at 3mm as to be absolutely sure that the form would fit together as intended.

Building the extrusions
Posted 18 May 2015 19:33
Day 4
We did a test assembly of our model to see whether it works before moving forward and discussing what to do with the interior.
Posted 18 May 2015 19:07
Day 4
The idea to use Le Corbusier paintings and extract from them pure forms for the envelope of our 'structure' being realized by laser cutting MDF sheets.

Posted 18 May 2015 19:06
Day 3 (15.05.2015 )
Concept developing for our group in progress . After splitting into smaller groups we decided for our group to use some of the paintings of Le Corbusier and generate an structural envelop.
Posted 18 May 2015 18:59
Day 2 (14.05.2015)
While we were doing the paintwork others were testing our idea to create a structure.
Posted 18 May 2015 18:58
Day 2 (14.05.2015)
Painting in progress. We decided that the Le Corbusier paintings would be our starting point toward purism which we were to apply to our design concept for a 'Museum'. This was our basic idea before dividing into smaller groups.

Final configuration.
Posted 18 May 2015 13:18
Transform Le Corbusier's painting into 3D and find the connecting circulation between 3 paintings.
Posted 18 May 2015 13:14
Revealing three paintings by Le Corbusier that were chosen to be the floor plans of the model.
Posted 18 May 2015 13:07
We then decided to make the painting 3D so we planned te bits to extrude and we laser cut them

Day 4,

Day 4,

Maquette model showing lighting scheme.

Posted 18 May 2015 12:14
Day 3,

We went on to our smaller groups and did more brainstorming, and decided on what 3 paintings we did, and generated a plan from the black lines we picked out from the paintings.
Posted 18 May 2015 11:44
We then split up into smaller groups and forwarded our narrative, so we tried to join his paintings and trace a common circulatory pattern over it
Posted 18 May 2015 10:58
We wanted our floors to be corbusier's paintings as we were designing alsmost a 'Corb Museum'
Posted 18 May 2015 10:56
We then made a test model of how we want our model to stand up
Posted 18 May 2015 10:55
We wanted to test out some materials for our scheme and see what would suit our design the most, so the above picture shows some test maquettes
Posted 18 May 2015 10:54
Day 2,

We looked at Le Corbusier's Paintings and concluded the one we would like to use... my group decided on the one with the most prominent black lines.
Posted 18 May 2015 10:48
Day 2,

The second session we brought materials to create test models, so we can experiment on different materials to see which ones work well together and compliment each other. We also went on to Painting the different levels of our facade.. which did not end up being used since we were all reshuffled and sub divided into smaller groups. but we begun to understand the project much more...

Testing models, casting shadows.
Posted 15 May 2015 19:49
Day 2, today we have divided into small groups and developed our design further based on yesterdays idea.
Posted 15 May 2015 03:34
Today we brought materials to create test models. Test models are to understand our material's strengths and weaknesses. We found our initial idea of stretched fabric for walls would look too sketchy, and so we tested more solid, common materials used for crafts.
Posted 14 May 2015 23:43
[Half-completed, stretched painting by Le Corbusier, acrylic on mounting board]

The symbol of modernism. A fascist, some have dubbed him. A living contradiction. Or perhaps, just a show off, this Le Corbusier. Yet who could deny the change he had inflicted in the world of architecture?
Posted 14 May 2015 22:10
Day 02: Today we started working on different ways to create curved walls for our building. We used a plethora of materials and techniques. Then we split to 3 different groups to discuss how to design our own interpretation of the idea. We decided to find a word that describes Le Corbusier and use is as a starting point of our design. Tomorrow we will present the ideas and further develop our concept.
Posted 14 May 2015 20:16
Today we all brought in materials to make test models for the extruded walls. Our initial idea was to use fabric stretched out and fixed on vertical poles. But then we found it did not give much stability as expected. We then started to test on other materials.

Our event, Performing Architecture, had the first session on 13th May. Our fifth year coordinators showed us a short film about the life of Le Corbusier. After having a brief introduction to his life, we started a group discussion about what we wanted to produce for our performance.

At the end of the day, we decided to make a model of a building incorporating the 5 elements of Le Corbusier's buildings, with three of his paintings as our building plan. By extruding lines and planes from the paintings, we aimed to create rooms and circulation out of the paintings.

Our performance at the end would be a short film showing how we assemble the model, and how the floors transform into individual paintings.
Posted 14 May 2015 12:28
Day 01: Today our group had its first meeting. We brainstormed on how to present an architectural idea through performing. Inspired by the life and ideas of Le Corbusier , we decided to create a building based on his paintings. After some research we found four paintings that we will use to create our own building based on Corbusier's 5 points of architecture. Our performance will be a choreographed assembly of our building made out of the four paintings. Tomorrow we scheduled to start working on some sketch models to test our ideas.

Day 1,

This was the first day of events, whereby we got information about what we are about to do for the next 2 weeks. We had to brainstorm, come up with ideas based on Le Corbusier's 5 points of architecture. So far so good...

Day 1, Today we have come up with our design based on Le Corbusier's five points of architecture philosophy and started to draft drawings on mount boards.

Day 1 putting all our ideas together
Posted 13 May 2015 10:35
Today was a brainstorming day in which we all presented ideas and tried to weigh the pros and cons of each one. I felt though, that the brief for this event was quite ambiguous and flexible so it was more difficult to get people to finalise on one thing quickly
