Day 1.
The main activity of the day was visiting the Z Arts Gallery from Hulme, palce that will hold our project development . We started by taking a tour of the building and ended in one of the main gallery rooms. Here we have listened to our client specifications for the project and took measurements of the room. The task was to create an educational and fun interior playground for kids.

DAY 09
Finally! After long hours of sewing and knitting we eventually managed to finish our installation. Each material represents different site - St Peter's Square, Whitworth Art Gallery, Afflecks Palace and Mancunian Way. The shape is the transition of a sound wave received from our recordings. However exciting it sounds, it was very time - consuming idea. Although, worth it!
Posted 21 May 2015 21:20
we managed to create a very exciting and colorful space
Posted 21 May 2015 21:19
On 20/05 we shoot some videos around Chatham which we wanted to project on our installation. We needed at least 8 videos for each face of the cubes. We were filming that day the movement of people around Chatham in different time of the day then we made a compilation using 'IMovie' and ' MovieMaker'

On Friday we met with Polly, involved with the Save Oxford Road Corner Campaign. I presented to her, some initial designs of our modules for the beds, kitchen and shower. Currently we are unsure as to the aesthetic of the modules, although we know they need to be lightweight and want them to be colourful. Above, is an initial image I created to try and show the idea of trucks carrying the modules.

We decided to create a Homeless Shelter using a modular system that would close into standard cuboids to fit into a truck for transport to new locations. These are our initial sketches.

Having decided on the level of details to be included, the materials used and the means of production, all that is left to do is start the CAD drawings. After assembling the first few pieces we realised that it was a good decision to use several layers in order to highlight the details and give a sense of depth.

Today we got to present our final group proposals to the creative arts director, Saskia. After presenting our ideas she seemed really happy with our ideas, which was really gratifying for us after the work and the enthusiasm we put in this project. Overall this project was an amazing experience for me that gave me an insight on the way real life projects are approached.

Posted 21 May 2015 20:38
On Tuesday each one of us developed a specific part of the design creating perspective images based on the 3D model that would portray the textures of materials and indicate the scale by the addition of human figures of both the interior and the exterior. Having worked on the images beforehand on Wednesday we got the opportunity to discuss technical improvements we could make to make our concepts even clearer. At the end of the day we started out planning how the presentation would be organized.
Posted 21 May 2015 20:34
During our first meeting after the site visit we split into four groups, each with a different approach to designing the memorial. Every group had to come up with their design proposal while also doing a task that would benefit the whole group. Here we are discussing how we could do the site model.

Posted 21 May 2015 20:23
Finally, after a lot of hard work and a lot of fun, our final physical model stands tall just like St. Luke's Church, a reflection of the suffering and destruction, as well as a reflection of the bravery and resilience of the people of Liverpool.

Posted 21 May 2015 20:20
Day 7. With the wood sheets arriving we were able to start the production of our DJ booth. Shapes were cut out using the CNC machine and sanded and finished in the workshop. Issues with pieces fitting together and hole sizing arose, but we were able to resolve them in the workshop.

After visiting the site we took a detour and visited the Liverpool Cathedral, which is based of one of Giles Gilbert Scott's designs. We also had the chance get a bird's eye view of our site from the tower of the Cathedral.
Posted 21 May 2015 20:13
Day 5. Now that we have a final design, its onto the details and construction timetabling to make sure the build runs as smoothly as possible. Four large structural pentagons and purlins acted as the fame, with plastic sheeting as the waterproof cladding. Three inner pentagons included holes to enable us to string the white rope within, creating the wormhole effect.

Final outputs: Model of Wittgenstein's redesigned hut; Box kite
Posted 21 May 2015 20:04
One of the drawbacks of our initial concept was that we failed to unite all the elements in our concept. This brings us to our final concept. After a lot of brainstorming sessions and heated group discussions, we finally came to a conclusion. In order to unite all the elements of our concept, we decided to not showcase the broken fragments in plinths. Instead, we decided to hang them from the roof using several strings and wherever these strings are connected to the roof for each fragment, we took out that portion of the roof and hung it below the fragment using strings, thus uniting all the elements.
Posted 21 May 2015 20:03
Day 4, part 2. The final design incorporates uv string which we intend to light up using black lights in order to produce a wormhole like effect. This was inspired by one of our first design proposals, an infinity mirror. By editing the photo I am able to produce a more realistic visual of to how it will be seen on the night.

Posted 21 May 2015 19:54
On Monday we worked in our group trying to finalize an idea of how both the interior and the exterior will look like. After discussing our ideas and sketching out some general ideas of how specific elements would work within the space we realized that in order to materialize our idea we had to make significant changes to the level of the floor, by lifting it and adding ramps to the two sides. We managed to visualize the design more accurately by making a 3D model with Rhino, which a second year student was really good at and helped us through.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:54
The final 1:1 DJ booth constructed in the open studio on the eight floor. Through the test build we discovered a couple of issues such as the frame swaying laterally. To combat this we added extra bracing between the structural pentagons. We also built a DJ table to fit exactly within the front space of the booth since the strings and pentagons create a lot of spacial constrictions and requirements.

Posted 21 May 2015 19:53
Day 4. Model making time. As a team of 3 we built a 1:10 model of our final design.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:53
The wax forms were photographed, lights were used at a variety of angles to help show different details within the wax, as well as show the translucent properties the wax
Posted 21 May 2015 19:52
Our initial concept had the roof design which represented the destroyed trusses, the gaps filled with shattered glass representing the shattered souls and the broken fragments of the lost elements of the church showcased in plinths. Each glass plinth showcased an element. Spot lights above the plinths and diffused light coming out from the bottom of the plinths were installed to portray a subtle image, a reflection, an idea. The idea was to create a subtle image of bombs hitting the ground. If we can imagine a bomb hitting the ground and freeze the image at the very moment it touches the ground. We'll be able to a trail of smoke behind the bomb and fire just about to rise from the part of the bomb which hits the ground. The concept was to create a subtle reflection of this through the lights where the plinths act as the bombs.

Day 3. Feed back from the panel after our presentations was to combine 3 of the proposals, the use of pentagon shapes from our geodesic dome idea, the shed like structure from another and the use of strings to create parabolic forms from the 3rd.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:50
After we had threaded the three full size pentagons we layered them against each other just to check for scale and that the DJ would be able to move freely and comfortably inside the space left in between

Designing a wearable furniture allowing users to be able to sleep while standing up. In the process of planning and building a prototype from scrap materials.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:49
This is the full scale first pentagon just after it had finished being threaded. The process was very slow initially but we became a lot faster with practice and hopefully the final build for the festival should be much faster than our initial build.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:49
After creating the hanging wax forms, they were melted back down in order to create more forms, this time focusing on creating thin, waving sheet type structures. These were created by pouring the wax slowly on top of the water

Day 6:
In the morning we continued to take more interviews and find out more about Hulme. In the second part of the day we started to edit the footage.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:48
Day 2. Presentation day to the client. We presented our 8 different proposals to a panel made up of people from the SU, Pangaea committee, 5th year architect students and Jim and Scott From the workshop.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:47
The proposal that was decided on had the loose theme of tension strings surrounding the DJ creating a permeable membrane. We then developed this idea until we had a final design made up of strings threaded between structural pentagons. This is the 1:10 model in development, testing the arrangements of the strings.

I watched the famous Star Trek Into Darkness as my precedent film. The film shows us lot of different cars flying in the air. Some of them are like today’s sports cars, which can move very fast while
some are like bus which move slowly but smoothly. This inspired me
to create different levels for the future transport system.
Meanwhile, roads are still exist, not only on the ground but also in the air.Roads in the air can be supported by thick columns. In the film, cars on the ground still use wheels to move which reminds me future cars can have two status. Ground cars move slowly but safely which is suitable for accident cars while roads in the air can be for special institutions such as hospital police and some big
companies. Air roads are like tracks which can move very fast and safely without requesting drivers’ much attention.

My favourite proposal for the DJ booth was by Arjun Mistry and consisted of several infinity mirrors surrounding the DJ. To test the theory behind the mirrors Arjun made a scaled down version from mirrored acetate, LED fairy lights and wood. Unfortunately the proposal was too expensive for our budget so we had to focus on other proposals.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:44
Day 1. Using initial ideas to create and design our first set of proposals. As a group of three we looked at geodesic domes, using models to develop our idea. We experimented with shape and materials, for example looking at combining material and frame and the effect it created once lit up.

A rainy afternoon spent in the pub...
We treated ourselves to a pint and conversed with the locals who have memories and experiences of living in Hulme in the 80's/90's. Some of which have lived in the crescents, and others who spent there youth partying in Hulme - once the hotspot for music and raves. Everyone was super friendly, but most shied away from the camera. We had a great evening partying with the drunken locals and jamming to reggae and jazz. Great shots were taken !

To approach the design problem we separated into small teams and created some initial ideas. We created several sketch geodesic domes, then deconstructed them in various ways to experiment with the different shapes that could be created and how the DJ could interact with both the space and the crowd.
