Reflections of the past: the final part of our concept. When the church was bombed, a lot of its elements/organs were destroyed as well. Elements like the columns, the altar, the bells, the tapestry, the benches, the trusses, the beams, the sculptures, the stained glass, all burnt, all destroyed. We wanted people visiting the church to experience the destruction, we wanted them to see a reflection of what used to be there but isn't there anymore. Therefore, our concept included fabrication of these elements in white color. Our intervention has broken fragments of these elements hanging from the roof at different heights. Thus, a reflection of the past.

Thursday 14th May 2015
In the afternoon we had a lecture with the director of Dogs of Heavan, Michael Mayhew. He had a lot of memories and experiences to share with us which helped us to further discuss our film ideas.

On our first day we went to Liverpool to familiarise ourselves with the site and its surroundings. Given the fact that we were to design a war memorial inside the ruined church, context was as important as the intervention itself.

Wednesday 13th May 2015
In the afternoon we made our way to an urban design firm named Urbed, and The North West Film Archive to search for valuable materials that could help us with our project.
Posted 21 May 2015 19:06
The next part of our concept was to fill the gaps in the roof created by the design, with 4000 broken pieces of glass. These 4000 pieces of shattered glass represents the 4000 shattered souls, the 4000 lives which were lost during the Liverpool Blitz which also destroyed the church.

Posted 21 May 2015 18:28
Site visit day , the goal is to integrate the display into the fabric of the building , and by observing the built environment we will get to know more
Posted 21 May 2015 18:27
The Grid
We decided from the precedents in the Whitworth that it would be a good idea to hang our entire display from the ceiling. We decided to make a metal grid, consisting of 1m lengths and welded them together to create a strong structure.

Our group's proposal for the exterior space is to make use of the natural lighting available and create interesting patterns using coloured windows. This will create a vibrant space when the shadows are cast on and it would change constantly with the direction of the sun.
Posted 21 May 2015 18:24
DAY 5
We spent the day putting our ideas together and made a storyboard. We then wrote out questions for the interviews and contacted the people who we thought would be good to use in our film.

Day 8//
Looking for inspiring precedents
Posted 21 May 2015 17:53
Using scalpels we created tracks travelling down some of towers. We then pushed a wick into the gap and then covered it with hot wax using a small brush. This will allow us to melt the wax towers down in a controlled fashion.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:53
Final site model: we used layers to create thick wall and also to achieve the depth in windows

The final output on site. The roof with the bottles was transported and the palettes were reassembled on site. The two attached to each other to create the final output with the plants and flowers integrated into the palettes. The coloured roof and flowers worked very well in creating a welcoming, vibrant seating area.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:49
Day 7//
I created sound diagrams on the location maps in order to show where the majority of sound was coming from in the recordings.

We have compared the Cornerhouse site and the HOME site through diagrams, in order to understand the degree of enclosure, the circulation around the building, geometry and how accessible they are.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:44
The plastic bottles were collected from recycle bins and bamboo was used for the frame. The bottles were then filled with coloured inks and hung to the frame. The roof was not meant to be 100% waterproof therefore there was spaces between them.

The above photograph shows how hangers were placed on the rod.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:42
My final design was based on the sci-fic universe ‘Star Trek’. And the transportation method I designed comes from the existing idea in star trek, the transporter. In this universe, the people use the trap sorter to beam people to and out of the spaceship.
My idea was to apply this technology on the planet, allowing people to used this method to have international space travel for the people across the globe. This methods allow people to instantly travel anywhere on the planet.

Monitoring the process of creating the new base in the metal workshop.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:38
Construction commences: We decided upon an L-shaped base as this is more sociable than squared seating; students will find it easier to talk to one another. The palettes on top are not set so can be easily moved to suit the students to create different levels of seating.

Searching for a dark and narrow alley in the city centre, to place our model (for the final scene of the movie)
Posted 21 May 2015 17:35
On the last day of events, each group made a presentation of their final concept development sheets as well as a physical model of the installation. The presentation went well and it was really interesting seeing all the installations and interventions created by the other groups as they all had different approaches to the church. Reflecting back at the beginning of the events, it is really fascinating to see our development from day 1 through the final presentation today. I really enjoyed this project, it was a memorable and enjoyable leaning experience.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:34
Some finishing touches before the final presentation. Models were used to sell our whole idea as it would be the best way to show how the interactive walls operate.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:34
Day 6: We continued to work on the boxes for the exhibition and also worked on creating posters to advertise the event. We were supplied with only orange paint in small groups and could only use our hands to create the poster.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:34
Atmospheric and cosy reception area welcoming visitors at the entrance to the office.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:33
We explored precedent for both the base and seating as well as the roof. We decided upon palettes as these would be ideal for moveable seating. For the roof we decided upon plastic bottles as these would be easy to collect from bins and provide a colourful, welcoming area.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:32
Day 7: We spent the day building our final exhibition by arranging the boxes. We displayed various drawings that were collected from Instagram by hanging them from string and also put our sketchbooks out for people to look through. We then talked about our work with guests who visited the exhibition.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:32
Reception area include furniture such as sofa made of black bottle holder boxes and reused cushions, table made of catalogues and wooden palette as well as hangers made of no longer used chairs which are perfect for hanging the coat. There are also wooden benches. In the kitchen area, there is a flower installation on the walls where plastic bottles were used.

DAY 4
We had a skills After Effects tutorial by Inda in the morning. Teaching us how to animate still photographs. Later, we had another lecture by Michael Mayhew, who spoke about his experiences about Hulme.

DAY 3
Wednesday morning started with a lecture by Dot about Hulme Memories app through stories and tours. This was then followed by a group discussion and presentation about film ideas.

Our final model placed on site (a narrow alley in the city center).
Posted 21 May 2015 17:21
This image shows the wax towers all in place on the base. The base has still to be painted. However, it gives us a good indication of what the final design will look like.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:21
We are working on different components of the final proposal. This is the beginning of a model of a drawing wall where there are paper rolls for children to draw on. Lots of colours are going into our proposal as it is going to be a fun space for kids.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:20
We listed the pros and cons associated with the site to determine what our final output will be and came to the conclusion of creating a singular intervention as opposed to multiple ones. The final idea would incorporate moveable seating, planting area for students to pick out herbs, and a basic coloured roof made from accessible, cheap but stable materials.

Posted 21 May 2015 17:19
A look at the individual trains themselves and the advancements in aerodynamics to prevent air resistance and increase speeds.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:18
We decided to spray paint some of the towers. We tested it on some left over wax first and then decided that we liked the finish enough to implement it in some of our design.
This allowed us to have more variety of buildings without having to alter the design too much.
Posted 21 May 2015 17:18
On Friday, a representative form Z-Arts came and we each presented our individual proposals for the given site. It was interesting to see all the different fun and unique ideas from other group members. At the end of the day, concepts from different people were grouped together to further improve the ideas for the final group proposal.
