Atelier: Re_Map

Day 5 (19/5/2015) -
Then we started to add layers to make the bed more comfortable to lie on.
Cardboard (fixed in place with screws) --> Bubble wrap (Stapled in place)

Day 5 (19/5/2015) -
First thing we did today was to add a PVC layer on top of the bed. We drilled holes and screwed in the screws to fix the PVC sheet in place.

Today the group split into two with one group working on cutting the back and leg boards and the other creating the personally moulded back and leg support.

Day 4 (18/5/2015) -
At the end of the day, we finally tried to lie on the bed to test whether it could support a person's weight and fortunately it didn't snap and is quite strong!
The photos on the left show the general idea of how will the bed be carried by a person and how would it fold away.

We will be back tomorrow to add the strap for people to carry and layers to make the bed more comfortable.
It was a nice day.

Day 4 (18/5/2015) -
However, after the structure was ready, we discovered the part where the hinges were installed was so fragile that it would definitely not support a person's weight.
So, we then added two blocks under to support it more, hinges were also installed so that they could be folded away.

Day 4 (18/5/2015) -
Later on, we inserted the dowels into the holes to test whether they need further amendments and then we glued them in.
We also added hinges in the middle to enable the bed to fold to the back.
The primary and secondary structure of the bed were done.

Day 4 (18/5/2015) -
Went to the workshop this morning and our pieces done by laser cutting were ready.
We then started cutting out the pieces from the sheet and sanded the edges, finally they were ready for us to assemble.

After creating a shape based on the human bodies dimensions we finalised the overall shape of the back board and added two knee joint supports.

We ordered materials and planned the construction timetable for next week.
Posted 18 May 2015 20:28
Today we decided on a device to allow sleep whilst standing upright. We created a life size model made to my dimensions and tested it out.

We also considered various colour schemes and shapes of our final piece of 'furniture-clothing'.

Day 1
At the site, Spinningsfield. In search for a specific spot to design our wearable furniture for.
Also to take note of the type of users within the space and analyse what kind of wearable furniture would cater to their needs.

Day 1- We visited our site (Spinningfields) in order to determine the target of our project. Due to the construction sites the area is really dusty, so we wanted to make something to make the quality of the air better

Metal stripes are welded to form the frame of the proposed garment.
Posted 15 May 2015 16:51
In order to provide oxygen in this privately owned public space, a garment could be worn, so that the visitor could carry his own clean air when visiting the site.
Posted 15 May 2015 13:47
There are two ongoing constructions in Spinningfields. The dust coming from the sites affects the quality of the air in the area.
Posted 15 May 2015 13:42
Today we ventured into Spinningfields to discover the extent and impact of privately owned space. Once aware of the change in land ownership and sole commercial interests of its inhabitants the area became unwelcoming and hostile.

We talked to a security guard who, when asked 'what are the rules around here' swiftly replied 'what aren't the rules, there is nothing you're allowed to do here!'.

We noticed the instant cleanliness, the narrow demographic of users and the hostility to the space being used in any other way than adhering to the for profit motif.

Touches of 'homeliness' had been attempted with sorry looking 'meet me here' litter bins and the addition of a false area of grass named 'The Lawns', which we were soon told we could not used as this was 'Private Property'.

Day 2 (13/5/2015) -
Today our group came up with a final design, inspired by the sleeping zone in learning commons. It is a wearable bed.
Robert and Rameezz first sorted out the structural problems and together we started drawing the main structure on a piece of paper in order to know the dimensions accurately.
Rameezz then started drawing the shape on Autocad, and it is now ready for laser cutting, which would happen on the coming Monday.
We've made good progress so far :)

Day1(12/5/2015) -
Went over to Spinningfields for a site visit and asked about the regulations for the private space there.
Came back to studio later on and sketched a few initial ideas based on the theme our group came up of---to create a wearable shelter for homeless people, allowing them to sleep on site without violating the rules.
