Day 8
The day was spent editing the footage collected. Hours of film had been collected from the past few days which had to be sifted through to generate a concise flow. Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects were used.
Posted 22 May 2015 15:31
Day 7
Tuesday was a full day of filming, interviews were the main item to produce. a total of 6 interviews were made which helped to give us material t generate a story and argument. There were some challenges with getting good quality audio, and consistent audio.
Posted 22 May 2015 15:26
Day 8
We visited Homes for Change today, the space where we present our films on Friday night.
Posted 22 May 2015 15:24
Day 6
We spent day filming cut scenes around Hulme. It wasn't a great day so a lot of the film portrayed Hulme as a dead place with very little life.
Posted 22 May 2015 15:19
Day 7
We continued editing our film today as well as starting to planning the exhibition.
Posted 22 May 2015 15:18
Day 5
First day of filming commenced. Kelso, who we had previously met from our tour of Hulme kindly agreed to be interviewed to offer his perspectives on the crescents. He spoke really well, exclaiming himself that it was "the best he's ever spoken". We chose to do the interview in a setting comfortable to the speaker. He chose the subway near his house where he had tagged (painted) many times.
Posted 22 May 2015 15:07
A parallel between the past and the present Hulme that will be a part of our film topic.
Posted 22 May 2015 14:50
Our film is based on the music influence that came from Hulme in the period of the crescents and how the locals that lived and partied back then are keeping the music alive today. In order to find more informations and document the "present Hulme", we went to the Junction, the only pub that was built back then and it still stands today. There we found that the music is kept alive through the bands that perform weekly at the jam nights. This is a screenshot from the editing process.
Posted 22 May 2015 14:43
In order to promote the event, each group had to create a poster based on the topic of their film. This was one of our first attempts.
Posted 22 May 2015 14:25
DAY 8//Editing, editing and more editing
We spent our day at Kim by the sea, a nice little bar/cafe not far away from our venue for Friday's exhibition. The biggest part of our short film - trimming and putting all the clips together - was finished, so we were left to do the details: adding transitions between the clips and music.
Posted 22 May 2015 14:20
Michael Mayhew is an artist who was part of the group Dogs of Heaven which put the spectacular show for the End of The Crescents. Having lived there, during that period, he gave us a lecture on the history of the crescents. We learnt that at the beginning they were considered an utopian project meant to revolutionize the concept of housing for families, but in the end they became exactly the opposite. At the end of the lecture we had a brainstorming session where we started developing the storyboards for our films, under his superivison.
Posted 22 May 2015 14:16
The final stages of film development were interesting as we had to make use of new kinds of software in order to edit the images, footage and sounds that went into the final film.
Posted 22 May 2015 14:07
A visit to the Homes for Care exhibition space helped us plan out how we wanted to display our films.
Posted 22 May 2015 14:02
We developed on our initial story board and came up with a more clear understanding of how we wanted our video to progress.
Posted 22 May 2015 14:01
Michael Mayhew, who was an artist that took part in the End of Crescents bonfire, organised by dogs of heaven, gave us a lecture on his memories of the area and spoke to us about our film ideas. He encouraged us to develop our ideas by drawing and writing out thoughts out on the wall.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:59
We also had a tour of the Hulme Hippodrome, a legendary place where bands like The Beatles performed. This used to be the majestic main entrance of the building, now in decay.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:57
We had a skills session on adobe After Effects where we were given the basic skills required in film making. This gave us a basic understanding of the software which we later built on using video tutorials.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:56
After developing a rough understanding of what we wanted our finally video to be, I created this image to illustrate the idea of overlaying old images of the crescents with new edited images.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:53
We spoke to an artist, Dot, who has experience in recording ideas using only audio. He gave us more insight into old Hulme and helped us develop rough story boards for our films.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:51
DAY 6
During the morning we interviewed Tony Kelzo. Later we then began editing the sound on After Effect, creating a rough draft to present along with a poster.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:50
We were given a tour of Hulme by a graffiti artist named Kelzo who grew up in the Hulme crescents. He showed us different areas of Hulme along with images of what it looked like in the past.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:49
Having met up to get to know each other and discuss the project, we visited the Hulme Hippodrome. It was interesting to listen to the history of the building which helped us understand the social conditions of Hulme during the time it was in use.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:45
In the first days we had the opportunity to visit Hulme with a local graffiti based artist named Kelzo who showed us how the area has changed over time. It was really interesting to see that certain parts of Hulme keep alive the history that goes back to the crescents and the music festivals that took place there. The first picture was taken from where one of the blocks of flats used to be.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:43
The first day we met we had a bbq in Hulme to help put as all at ease so that we can all meet each. Later that day we visited the hippodrome to have a look at it's current condition.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:35
On this day we visited the Manchester Library to do some historic research on Hulme. We were able to use the National Archives data base to source some very good information.
Posted 22 May 2015 13:30
We met together as a group today to discuss and work on our film making and making sure everything was running smoothly.

Posted 22 May 2015 12:54
Day 4
As the event was film based it was imperative that we had a basic knowledge of some film editing software. The morning of day 4 was spent learning Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.
In the Afternoon former Dogs of Heaven member Michael Mayhew facilitated a workshop. He began by exploring the role of the crescents in Manchester, describing it as "the groin area" in an analogy where he likened Manchester to the human body.
Posted 22 May 2015 12:25
Flyer for Advertising
We designed and printed many flyers and distributed them to the public
Posted 22 May 2015 11:32
Day 3
We were asked by this point in the project to have a rough story board of our film. Each group took turns presenting, comments were offered and criticisms voiced.
From our presentation we received some useful comments. Our concept we were told was strong however there wasn't enough evidence of how we planned to articulate it through the medium of film. We had an idea but we didn't have a film.

Film editing
Editing and compiling the footage to create our final film.
Posted 22 May 2015 11:24

Hulme based graffiti artist Kelzo gave us a short presentation on the conditions and culture of Hulme during the crescents. Having lived in Hulme since the 1980's he has seen the dramatic shift in the landscape over the last few decades. He gave us a tour around Hulme in which we were given old photo's which Kelzo had collected (photos can be found at
www.exhulme.co.uk). We were then taken around and told stories about the area, compare how the neighbourhood looks now compared to the old photos and of course have some Caribbean food.

A rainy afternoon spent in the pub...
We treated ourselves to a pint and conversed with the locals who have memories and experiences of living in Hulme in the 80's/90's. Some of which have lived in the crescents, and others who spent there youth partying in Hulme - once the hotspot for music and raves. Everyone was super friendly, but most shied away from the camera. We had a great evening partying with the drunken locals and jamming to reggae and jazz. Great shots were taken !

Sunday 17th May 2015
Once again, we walked around Hulme taking shots of the residential areas, The Hippodrome, Shops and Hulme park. These will be used in the film to compare Hulme's past to the present. It was a very grey day, perfect for the atmosphere we were trying to create.
