For my high speed trains that travel along the sea bed I will need advancements in water hydraulics and valves used at extremely high pressure. However, my future technology is the vac train - a airless tubular tunnel that the trains run through at thousands of miles per hour.

DAY 08

Today was a long day of construction process. We began with stapling down the mesh and hammering the legs in to create the frames of our installation. After that we moved on to stitching through the threads and then sewing in the sound waves of St. Peter's Square and Whitworth Art Gallery. We still need to add 2 more waves tomorrow but however knitting is quite a tiring task we are enjoying ourselves while doing it!

Posted 20 May 2015 20:48
After finalising the sketched designs we then made a sketchup model to see how we could create this model in reality. By making a sketchup model it made it a lot easier for us to figure out how and what we could use to make this structure. At the point we were starting to think in dept about materials and the components we would need to make this structure solid so that it could hold a persons weight when they lie on top of it.
Posted 20 May 2015 20:47
In preparation for the presentations, we formulated a document showing the narrative and process of our design approach. This document discusses how we went from the three initial schemes to our final scheme, and the reasons for certain orientations and placements.

By Observing the area and coming up with a whole new design which would be within the limits and rules and regulations of spinningfields…

We came up with this dramatic yet very interesting design "THE PREDITOR".

We sketched 12 different ideas as a group and came up with this final design.

This Design is for a foldable structure which is used for multipurpose for example you can use it to lie on or you can use it to protect you from the wind by wearing it like a backpack.

Session 1 Site visiting.
Chosen site= Spinningfields, Manchester

Spinningfields is a private sector owned by a private company so therefore there are certain restrictions in this area, which we going to discover on our first site visit.

On our first day of events we went to visit this area to discover what the area is like and what are the restrictions for example what is forbidden in this area?

We discovered that the spinnignfields does not allow bikes, skate boards and homeless people sitting around, they have security guards operating majority of the times and they have CCTV pretty much all around spinningfields.

My scenario is set in the future when climate change and extreme weathering have taken place and the earths surface is too dangerous to live on so everyone lives underwater.
Posted 20 May 2015 20:29
Our second week of the event was held at SpaceportX. The first task was to doodling on the cardboard box where it will become a part of exhibition later. We also had a group exercise on how to create narrative by connecting some random sketches.

Testing Reactions

We put the skeleton in the actual site and photographed the drama students' reactions, getting some very odd looks. Not entirely sure if they thought it was creative, or just plain weird!

The Skeletons!

We put the real skeletons to the test today and hung them up using clear fishing wire, which proved strong enough. We blacked out all the windows in the entire room lit the corsets from different angles. Very spooky!

Model Prototype

Today we made a replica model at a 1:10 scale of the real situation. This was really helpful to see what the final version would look like. We tested out 1980's clothes in collaboration with the corset and put the models in a black box to give us an idea of what the room would look like blacked out.

Tuesday 12th May 2015

Kelzo - a popular graffiti artist in Hulme, toured us around the area, showing us the comparisons between Hulme Now and Then using old photographs and his valuable memories. Its fascinating to see how much Hulme has changed. It was a great kick start to the topic! What to base our film on...

Another render I made today and finished on photoshop. I think the lighting has proved very subtle and inviting.
Posted 20 May 2015 19:18
After visiting the sites and seeing the artefacts from Special Collections we started working on our design. We decided to choose the 3D printed Femur Stool. The initial idea is inspired by Nelson Mandela sculpture in South Africa. The suspended from ceiling structure allows to explain the use of the stool by showing a representation of a person using it, without distracting attention from the object.
Posted 20 May 2015 19:17
After bringing the structure in separate pieces, we re-built the shelter on site.
Posted 20 May 2015 19:15
Final step-assembling the bottle roof. The bottles were fixed to the bamboo frame, with some ink added to the bottles to create a colorful pattern.
Posted 20 May 2015 19:09
We also visited Manchester Museum. Compared to the Gallery it seems to be more traditional, but was also a good opportunity to study the exhibition and allowed us to come up with ideas for our own designs.
Posted 20 May 2015 19:06
The assembled shelter at the end of the 5th day, almost ready to be brought on site.
Posted 20 May 2015 19:03
Testing one of the suggestions on how to attach the bottles to create the roof.
Posted 20 May 2015 19:02
As one of the main components of the structure was plastic bottle roof, we collected the bottles from recycling points on campus.
Posted 20 May 2015 19:01
After visiting the site, the group decided that the appropriate structure for the purpose of improving the site was sheltered seating.

DAY 7//Third day of filming and venue visit

On the third day of filming we got the majority of our footage. We also went to see the venue at which we are hosting the exhibition.
Posted 20 May 2015 18:52
Today was the final exhibition day. We designed and prepared the whole exhibition using the work we had done during these two weeks and some sketches which had been sent through Instagram from Malaysia.
Posted 20 May 2015 18:50
DAY 6//Second day of filming and presentations

Our group continued filming interviews and various shots for the film. At the end of the day we came back and presented the footage we had.

Posted 20 May 2015 18:48
On day one we visited Whitworth Art Gallery. This allowed us to observe how objects can be exhibited considering not only the way of displaying them but also the use of light.
Posted 20 May 2015 18:45
Post 5- Once we finished the physical model of our design, we fitted it onto the site model to see it with the surrounding context. Playing around with shadows and light was also interesting. We managed to get lots of amazing photos and had learnt a lot from this experience.

Technology for the Tycoons Transport (Upper Class)
The automobile that the Tycoons will be driving in 2094 is going to be self-driven with a manual overdrive. They will have the freedom to control where they go unlike the automobile that the Fugalites have. The Fugalites will only have automobiles at ground level whereas the Tycoons will have the ability to fly around their Ultra Rich, luxurious skyline city allowing them complete freedom. The technology that is used within these automobiles will be the same as the Fugalites vehicles, therefore jet power but with a dragonfly main tail rotor to allow the dragonfly (transportation) to fly in different directions, therefore up, down and sideways. The main tail rotor will be connected to the jet power engines; the rotor will then start to spin creating a torque effect, which then allows the dragonfly (transportation) aspect to maneuver the vehicle in any direction. The primary objective of the technology is thrust and speed with maneuverability being a key factor.
Posted 20 May 2015 18:22
Technology for the Fugalites Transport (Lower Class)
The automobile that the Fugalites will be driving in 2094 is going to be self-driven. The Fugalites will have a limited sense of freedom, as they will only be allowed to go to the preset destinations contained within the vehicles satellite navigation system. They will be propelled using the same jet power technology as the Tycoons but without the dragonfly rotor. Again, the primary objective of the technology is thrust and speed but with restricted maneuverability unlike the Tycoons vehicle.

Posted 20 May 2015 18:02
A few projection videos we tested on the white cloths hanging in our site.
Posted 20 May 2015 17:58
We tried to tie up everything and experiment on how to set up the cloths and try out the projection mapping onto our site.
Posted 20 May 2015 17:57
The site chosen by our group is the area behind stairs because that space is not being used and also can be easily seen by the people sitting at benches in cafe area. As the site is quite bright, it would be difficult to see the projections. Hence, we decided to put black cloths at both sides to block out the sunlight coming from buildings' glazing.

Lake district. Kurt Schwitters. Merz barn. The treasures that this place holds amaze every visitor and passer-by.
Posted 20 May 2015 17:56
After deciding on the cloth choice, we carry on by buying the cloths and cutting hole on it, with holes in the middle rotating and becoming small in sizes in different layers.
Posted 20 May 2015 17:50
Our final idea is to do projection mapping onto few layers of cloths. Therefore, we bought some samples of thin white cloths and experiment with the projectors to see if it works alright.

Exhibition day! Today we materialised the exhibition that we had curated. We presented our sketch books; doodled boxes; sketches from our partner sketchers in Malaysia; and had a model from local illustrator Philip. It was great to see our work collected! We also had an illustrative workshop from Phillip.

On the second day in our exhibition space, we started our sessions with a talk from Hakym about Sketch Fest as an organisation and movement. In groups we then created a poster that represented our sketching workshops using pen and orange paint to sketch. Finally, we then continued to doodle on boxes in preparation for the exhibition tomorrow

Using mount board, we quickly built some white cubes that we then projected onto. We were able to project a live feed from a video camera and a webcam.
Posted 20 May 2015 16:52
VLT is the projection mapping software we found to use. We spent a few hours experimenting with the software and teaching ourselves how to use it as well as learning the limitations of the software.
Posted 20 May 2015 16:50
The early part of the second week of events was spent getting to grip with the projectors, webcams and other technologies required to create the installation. We worked out the ideal surfaces to project onto as well as ideal lighting requirements.
Posted 20 May 2015 16:50
We now had access to projectors and began working out the technicalities of the project. We soon got it up and running with the correct cables and accesories

QUOTES FROM INTERVIEW WITH LADY WHO LIVED IN ANCOATS.

"You still fight it, but you don’t win. You can’t.”

"There is no sense of community compared to when I was a little girl.”

“Apparently this kind of regeneration is happening all over, in Germany, Holland, France…the same sort of thing.”
Posted 20 May 2015 16:48
Our chosen site on the third floor, whilst an interactive but not overcrowded space, was not able to support an installation of the kind of size and complexity we were dealing with as some of the elements would have caused an obstruction and been in breach of health and safety. We had a look at other locations, particularly in the Shed, but in the end decided on a different space in Chatham.
