We joined the Manchester Urban Sketchers on the third day at the Whitworth Art Gallery and got to know some useful tips in urban sketching. We mingled with them and I found myself learning quicker by getting to know how the more experienced sketchers sketch.

I wanted to capture the sense of the space and tried out the distorted perspective composition in one of my sketches.
Posted 19 May 2015 19:12
These three pictures were the final drawings on Monday. When I was drawing on the box, I wanted to do something abstract as we have been sketching real subjects for four days. So the idea of this random pattern was inspired by the pattern of the timber flooring in Spaceport. And the portrait drawing was just following the style of the last pattern. The third picture was from the group exercise.

We started to prepare for our Sketchfest Exhibition in SpaceportX on Monday. We doodled on the exhibition boxes, then we did a group brainstorming exercise in groups of 6. Each of us got to say a random word and all of us need to draw the word and pass our paper to the next person. This process stops when we get our first paper back, this session was fun and creative, different people think differently and the drawings we produced was so unique and interesting.
Posted 19 May 2015 18:37
On Monday morning we worked on our floor plans and further developed our concept, and in the afternoon architect Jim Chapman came to talk to us about our projects. We explained what precedents inspired us, why we intend to use Cornerhouse as an exhibition and how the exterior projectors and artistic installation will change the building's facade without actually altering it. After the presentation he gave us feedback and some advice in order to improve our scheme.
Posted 19 May 2015 18:29
On our next session we started experimenting with projection mapping on a box that we found in our studio room. After we explored how the VPT software works we created our own shape on which to project. The next step was discussing what videos to project. We decided to make short movies of circulation in Chatham and Benzie buildings. We also managed to create a live stream video in order to make our installation interactive
Posted 19 May 2015 18:25
We stayed at Chatham on Friday to prepare our exhibition. Our event group was decided into small groups which responsible for different things. There are film making group, painting group and booklet group. I am in the booklet group and we discussed the layout and collecting sketches from event group members. We spend our afternoon to sorted out sketches and put them into Indesign to form our booklet.

DAY 07

Today we spray painted our laser cut elements. We also prepared metal poles and finalised the drawings for the final booklet. Next step: sewing and assembling all the pieces together!
Posted 19 May 2015 18:00
We went to the Chorlton Arts Festival on Saturday. We all did our sketches on A2, and this is a much bigger scale compare to our A5 sketchbook. We also set up our exhibition sculpture roughly and hanged our sketches with some thread around the sculpture to see how it will look like. At the end of the Festival, we also had a chance to see the sketches from the urban sketchers. It has been a unique experience and great opportunity for me, live drawing diffidently challenges my sketching skill and made me learn faster.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:55
DAY 06

After presenting and discussing our installation idea with the coordinators we processed to laser cutting the wooden elements in order to assemble them later on. Throughout the rest of the day we worked on the analysis necessary for the booklet.

Day 6//
After polishing off our soundscape we started filming the video which will help us promote our installation.
We used 3 swinging lightbulbs in motion with the beat of the soundscape.

Day 4//
Workshops with NAVARS.
We were shown the ropes of programs such as 'Reaper' to get us started on making our own soundscapes.

The final hanger partition. The levels of opacity vary at different viewing angles.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:44
We used recycled plastic bottles as planters which we then suspended on rope from a beam balanced between two ladders. The screen is placed in front of the window so that the plants benefit from the natural light.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:42
Today was our second day at spaceport. We had a brief presentation on kl sketch nation's evolution and we then continued doodling on the exhibition boxes. Finally, we did a quick group activity. The fifth years explained that everyone could sketch with whatever material, so they gave us some paint with no brush. We were asked to sketch people sketching only by using our hands. We got really messy but we learnt that even with the most primary materials, we can keep sketching.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:38
We decided that in order to brace the base of the hanger partition, it would be easier to make it out of one solid piece which the metal poles would be welded to. We drew a CAD plan of the curved base design and overlapped the physical hangers to double check the dimensions before it was taken to the workshop for cutting.

This image is an axonometric done AutoCad of our concept showing the ruins and our intervention.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:35
The new model was much more stable and we devised a numbering system in order to overlap the hangers as we stacked them whilst also creating an even distribution of colour across the partition.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:34
The image above shows two rendering of our concept done on SketchUp and photoshop.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:33
Day 6- We went to the studio to meet up with our tutors and discuss our work so far with them. Their advice was really helpful as they clarified what we need to do to make sure that our concept is finalized and that our drawings and work shows everything we want to. They also approved of the concept and helped us with technical problems and with precedence. Afterwards, we decided on how our model will be made and agreed to laser cut it. As of the drawings, they are almost done but they need some adjustments and we need to adapt the tutor’s advice to make sure that the work is on the right track.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:32
We attempted to resolve the stability problem by creating a double curve base using six hangers rather than five.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:32
As we built the hanger partition higher it became more and more unstable due to both the weight of the supporting poles and its curved shape, it eventually collapsed.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:30
Experimenting with creating an even distribution of colour across the hanger partition.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:27
Day 2 - adding wooden bases under the poles to test the stability and alternating the stacked hangers to create potential for a more triangulated base structure.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:24
Day 5- After the tutors advice, we met as a group with an aim to discuss and finalize our concept. Eventually, we ended up with even more precedence, which lead us toward a better and more detailed concept. We did a sketch model of our concept and we made a checklist consisting of the following: An axonometric, a final photomontage of the installation, and various diagrams for a better understanding of the concept as well as a final model.

Posted 19 May 2015 17:22
Day 4- on that day, each group had to make a presentation describing their work and analysis and basically the whole purpose is to have a complete and full understanding of the site, history and all the aspects related to the church. So we went first and we presented our timeline, analysis as well as our precedents and initial ideas and concept. Later on, our tutors discussed the idea with us making sure that we are on the right track towards a final concept concerning our architectural intervention in the bombed out church. Afterwards, the other groups presented their work and it was really interesting seeing the work of the other groups as well as their concepts and their approach to the church,

Day 1 - creating a test model for the hanger partition using metal poles to secure the hangers in place.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:20
On Wednesday, we visited the Whitworth Art Gallery and joined a group of urban sketchers. We were able to see some great sketches from the urban sketchers and learned some great skills from them. One of the urban sketchers taught me to focus on the general atmosphere of the space and indicate materials with watercolour. Also it is important to keep the sketch simple and clean so it is easier to read. He told me to sketch quickly and frequently. This will help to find my own personality and style of the drawing I produced. So most of my drawings on Wednesday are coloured, I found colours are great to indicate materials and creating atmosphere.
Posted 19 May 2015 17:20
Day 3 – We met as a group (the 4 of us) and we started off by doing some research about the history of the church as well as collecting and assembling the photos we took to include in our research. Later on, we decided to divide the history into three main parts: Construction of the church and pre-bombing usage, the bombing during WW2 and finally post-bombing events and state of the church. Concerning the presentation, we decided that we would create a timeline showing the main events of the church alongside relevant pictures.

Ian Hunter came to visit us in the studio to see our design proposals. Discussions went well and he approved of some changes that we made to his initial visions. He was happy with the alterations of the semi-circular plan and with the visual perspectives.
Posted 19 May 2015 16:39
After the conversation with Ian on his ideas of the museum space, we began brainstorming ideas on alternative orientations that suited his vision. We wanted to get away from the semi-circular shape that Ian proposed by putting out alternate orientations that referred closely to his proposal.

Today I have brought the idea of low cost, efficient LED lighting into the works. It's nice to see something I visualised in my head on paper. The LED lights will provide a warm feeling to the site and entice people to explore. I have had the idea to place these LED strips along the bottom of the cantilevering bricks, so they are hidden, but give the bricks a sense of levitating.

The scenario I envisage happening in the future is how people will travel, not from city to city but from building to building. When skyscrapers are hundreds of storeys tall, a meeting at a neighbouring tower will be a trek! The fastest elevators at the moment run at 20 metres per second, to make this journey quicker I will imagine ways to traverse these buildings using futuristic transport and technology.

The second day started with sketching on the Piccadilly Garden. Before moving to the Market Street, Hakim gave us a brief tutorial. He taught us how to frame the sketching by deciding the main subject of the drawing. He also suggest us to do a small sketch just focused on one small subject. Then we moved on to the market street. We did few 15 seconds sketching exercises and an interior sketching in the Arndale.

Day six; Salted caramel and chocolate brownies // Consultation with MMU property services, health and safety and security

Today the double takers informally presented their schemes to MMU staff from health and safety, security, IT, facilities and capital projects, who offered their time to help with advise on potential technical detailing of the work.

The exercise was to allow double takers to consider their designs in a working environment, allowing for parameters and obstacles that they might encounter in a live project.

The advice offered was very useful and informative, and the feedback from the MMU representatives was positive across the board.

Cracking work all round!

To create a scenario and for inspiration, we were asked to watch sci-fi films. A common theme which runs through these movies is the war between human versus intelligent machines. The Matrix also challenges the idea of what reality is and imagines the possibility of our lives being unconsciously controlled inside a computer system. Many ideas of the future are dystopian and depict over populated cities with sky high mega structures such as those seen in Bladerunner.

Day 2 - Site Visit
After visiting the site, we were inspired by different objects, features and people that we came across. We have found that New Islington is being reshaped into an extension of the city centre and therefore is being redeveloped. Many core residents of New Islington were made to move away from Manchester to more suburban areas or different cities, where they needed to buy a house from the money that the council has offered them for their, soon to be demolished house, which left everybody involved in debt. It was clear that this is the dark side of Compulsory Purchase Orders, which did not consider the outcomes that would affect people’s lives for many years after.

Day 2 – On that day, we firstly introduced our selves in order to be more familiar with each other and then we individually stated what we particularly liked in the church as well as sharing our individual concepts. Eventually, we got divided into 4 groups, each working on a different concept as well as a site related aspect. Our group had to prepare a presentation about the site history.
