Having approached various concepts, we decided to pursue the idea of experimenting with netting and string, and began to look at ways in which this idea could manifest itself. Originally, we planned to create a chaotic intervention within the church, which would represent the smoke and rubble of the explosion. However, once we started experimenting with a more elegant approach, with all the string being focused into 2 points, at the altar and the tower (symbolically, the most significant features of the church), we decided this idea suited the nature of the site far better.

Day_04
Each group presented their ideas to Polly Bentham - founder of the 'Save the Cornerhouse' campaign. She provided feedback and discussed with us how we might to continue to develop our concepts.
Posted 18 May 2015 17:05
In order to develop our initial ideas, we made a sketch model of the church which we could use in order to experiment with various ideas. The theme of our intervention was destruction, so we originally planned to capture a freeze frame of the church exploding, and we came up with 3 concepts which we could use to achieve this:
-hanging objects off beams
-having objects exploding through windows using metal structures
-using net or string to create the sense of an explosion within the church itself

Day 5:
On day 5, we put our final ideas together and did a narative about it. We also walked around Hulme in order to take interviews and find out more about the place. In the meantime, I also worked on designing the poster.
Posted 18 May 2015 17:04
Day 4:
We had a skill tutorial for Adobe After Effects in the morning. We learnt how to animate still pictures. For example, we learnt how to make a picture with smoke on it to look like is moving and growing.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:53
Day_03
A day spent in studio coming up with initial ideas for the possible reuse of the Cornerhouse. These ideas were developed through diagrams and diagrammatical sketches.
The principal element of our concept is to influence the movement of commuters, and encourage them to pass through the Cornerhouse. To do this we would create a sort of passageway which would also provide a service for commuters.

DAY 1//BBQ and tour of the Hulme Hippodrome
We spent the afternoon of our first day getting to know each other and having a fun BBQ in Hulme Park, followed by an amazing tour around Hulme Hippodrome, originally known as the Grand Junction Theatre and Floral Hall. Sadly, once a grand and beautiful venue, the Hippodrome now looks nothing like it's old self.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:50
Following our site visit, we were given the task of compiling our site analysis in which we looked at factors such as climate, sound, population, use and nature of the site. All this data was used to help us develop our interventions, and progress our designs.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:47
Day 3:
We started the day with a lecture given by Dot. On the second part of the day we discussed our film ideas and also did diagrams about it. At the end of the day we all shared our ideas and tried to improve them together.

Designing the cage for our artifact. Going from a cylinder to an octogon.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:40
As part of the events week we were asked to attend the Manchester Wakes: Workers at Play event at the Central Library. A diverse range of acts inhabited the Central Library, reimagining the building not as a quiet and studious space, but as a venue for spoken word, choirs, ukulele bands experimental soundscapes.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:37
Day 5 - Today we discussed our final concept design for the memorial installation for St Luke's, and started to figure out how to construct the model and the view points for the perspectives. With both aspects we wanted to enforce the the anchor point for the altar to demonstrate that all the strands connect at one central point.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:32
As a group we began to explore how we might visually convey the sound waves generated in an installation piece. We looked at the works of artists Maggey Casey and Anne Lindberg, drawing inspiration from their use of wire and fabric. Our final proposal drew from investigation of our sites, and aimed to convey the different motions and sound generated at these locations in one comprehensive artwork.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:31
Day_02
Site analysis. We visited the old Cornerhouse site in pairs and completed some diagrams and sketches. Afterwards we went to the new cultural hub, 'HOME' designed by Mecanoo.
From our analysis of the site, we concluded that a suitable reuse of the Cornerhouse would compliment one of the surrounding buildings. We considered the train station to heavily influence the site and the ideas we develop are likely to follow on from this.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:30
Day 2:
On our second day we walked around Hulme with Tony Kelzo, who offered us a great insight in what used to be there and what it is now. On the second part of the day we discussed our first film ideas.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:02
Finished building cube nets for our final output. The whole group was involved in cutting the cardboard. We cut out different sizes to allow the user to interact with them in different ways.
Posted 18 May 2015 16:01
DAY 3 AND 4 //
We finalized the analysis and put them into visual presentation. We also started on the filming of our video which would be the prototype of our installation.
Posted 18 May 2015 15:59
Day 1:
On our first day we were taken on a tour around the hippodrome in Hulme. After visiting this great building, we were stimulated to be more interested in the history of Hulme. It is also sad to see such an edifice being covered in pigeon poo and forgotten by the world.
Posted 18 May 2015 15:46
The web system will be supported by lace columns and get denser in the less used areas allowing natural light and shadows.
Posted 18 May 2015 15:45
After further analysis of the site we changed our installation design and decided to wrap the altar-the main focus for a religious ritual, with a web constructed to connect each part of the ruins to it.
Posted 18 May 2015 15:37
The floating pieces would stick out from the windows gradually overpowering the site with the bomb explosion.
Posted 18 May 2015 15:27
Our first proposal for the memorial was to create an image of explosion inside the church and make an overwhelming impression of the bomb attack by exploding the walls elements out
Posted 18 May 2015 15:21
Final test model (1:5)- we allowed the frame to remain open at the front of the design, to allow an unobstructed view of the Femur stool.
Posted 18 May 2015 15:15
Test model (1:5)- starting to adapt the frame to interact with the site, flowing up the steps of site 3.
The plastic container is used to represent the Femur Stool. This model raised concern over the frame's bracing obstructing the view of the stool.

Our design scheme is to create a memorial intervention within the church. The commemoration to the WW2 is being reflected by the frozen explosion scenario. As you can see from the image, the structure in the centre of the church represent the twist made by the falling bomb while the random brick-like material on both side represent the loosen material of the church after WW2.

Before formulating our own response towards a scheme in group, we were told to advance our knowledge towards the bombed out church in the historical aspect.
Posted 18 May 2015 14:54
On Friday we presented our individual proposals to the the 5th year students and a member of the Z arts. After a discussion we were split into groups and told to in cooperate all our ideas into one. The perspective shows the idea I wanted to create of changing the exterior space into a space in which the kids can interact with nature and their surroundings.

This photograph shows the way Cornelia Parker's work has been suspended from the ceiling at the Whitworth Art Gallery. Strangely enough, we took inspiration from the method of suspension, and not of the actual work of art.

Posted 18 May 2015 12:44
Day Three - On Wednesday we started to develop ideas and our initial concepts. We began with the idea of creating an interior garden space and then developed it further by linking it to the Cornerhouse cafe/bookshop building. We presented our ideas to the fifth years, who gave us some precedents to look at and gave us some ideas on how we could present our designs.
Posted 18 May 2015 12:41
Initial design sketches and analysis of the Femur Stool, Assa Ashuach studio. 'Exterior Optimisation', was a main focus for this project, making use of 3D print capabilities. We propose extending the polygon surface of the stool, in order to create an organic framework which would surround and exhibit the product.

Day 1
As we were not sure of what CPO (Compulsory Purchase Order) means, we were asked to do a little research about CPO and what it meant. After that we were asked to choose a CPO site in manchester and do a full analysis plus a response to that specific site. We chose West Gorton to focus on as it was an area that the council keeps making decisions about doing a CPO on every two or three decays.
Posted 18 May 2015 12:26
We then decided to make the painting 3D so we planned te bits to extrude and we laser cut them

Day 1 (11/5/2015)
We started off the day with a briefing at Chatham 513 by the 5th year students, Hakym, Akmal and Siew. They told us the aims and plan for the whole two weeks of SketchFest. We also received our sketchbooks, badges and t-shirts to represent the group. Hakym taught us the basics of sketching aspects such as lines, shape, shade and perspective.
After lunch, we gathered in front of the Central Library to do our first sketch walk. Having the Central Library and its surrounding as our main subject, we did our first sketch there before moving on to Town Hall area and Albert Square. The target is to do at least 3 sketches a day. Looking forward to the next sketch walk session!
