We decided to base our "Architecture as Actor" project on the animated fantasy film "Howl's Moving Castle". It is an amazing film and we were very inspired by it.

So we started drawing sketches, thinking how we can interpret the film into our project.

Day 2
All the groups had to laser cut the parts from the Hut and spray it in white. The only bits we had to spray in different colour were the extension parts. Our next task was to start thinking of an interpretation of the original Hut, relating it to our research on Wittgenstein's logic.

Our Site Analysis sheet shows the differences between the Cornerhouse's and HOME's position within Manchester, its accessibility and the way it sits with the surrounding buildings. Throughout this project I have felt that although HOME has some very valuable facilities, it lacks the connection with Manchester that the Cornerhouse does. As well as lacking in character, and style.

We filmed a character taking a stroll, the character would then have his day messed up..
Posted 21 May 2015 14:39
In preparation for tomorrow's presentation and hand in, we have created a site analysis sheet and a proposal sheet. We have created diagrams, plans and perspectives to illustrate our ideas (as discussed with our year 5 group leaders as the best imaged to create to sell our idea). I believe that these images successfully show how we imagined our scheme to be and help give a sense of the atmosphere we wished to create with our installation.

Once we had the frame constructed and stable, it was a case of making it comfortable for its user. We firstly added clear PVC to the circular end (wind-break), thus allowing the user the clearly see where s/he is going. Cardboard was then added along the entire length of the design which would provide the base for the bubble wrap to be placed upon. Bubble wrap was decided upon after a hardship in finding a more comfortable 'spongey' material. Bubble wrap was a cheap and practical. yet 'comfortable' alternative.

Placing the skeleton on the site.
Posted 21 May 2015 14:19
Day 3- When the frame was ready we headed down to the fabric store to look for different fabrics to cover the garment. The main aim was to find a breathable, lightweight material to cover most of the garment and also a stretchy material for the straps. At the end we decided to use an ivory nylon netting to cover the garment and a transparent material for the face so the person wearing it would have a clear vision.
Posted 21 May 2015 14:16
The frame was mainly constructed using 15mm MDF and was supported by 25mm dowel pieces. The design involved a hinged folding piece in order to enable the user to more easily carry the item. For further structural support where the hinges are, addition fold-able legs were added. Without this addition, the design would not be structurally sound.

We fixed the internal padding to the wooden structure. We used rolled up newspaper wrapped in layers of wadding to create this. The padding is fixed using a staple gun, so as to ensure a strong hold.
Posted 21 May 2015 14:07
Our next step was converting the design from potentiality into actuality. With the aid of the CNC cutter. we started to fabricate the model.
Posted 21 May 2015 14:06
DAY 8

We set up camp in the heart of Hulme, in Kim by the sea as we spent our last day editing our film. The main frame and structure of the film was complete, leaving today to add music, edit transitions and add effects using the program, After Effects.
Posted 21 May 2015 14:05
Day 5
Day Five was our first day of filming and recording interviews with Hulme residents that lived in or around the crescents. We also produced posters that helped advertised the screening of our films.
Posted 21 May 2015 14:05
Day 4
We went to the workshop and began the construction of the garment. In doing so, we decided that the separate panels should be connected using hinges, to ensure it remains rigid.
Posted 21 May 2015 14:04
On our second day, we brought together our different concepts and finalised the design. Through sketches, 3D modelling and photoshop, we were able to propose our idea and understand it in greater depths.

Posted 21 May 2015 14:03
Day 3
We finalised our design, deciding that we should build it using a wooden frame so as to ensure that the item is lightweight and therefore wearable. We also looked at different materials for the covering, settling on a polyurethane fabric which would give the garment a waterproof exterior.
Posted 21 May 2015 14:02
We started our Events task by a site visit to Spinningfields, in order to investigate the concept of public and private space. After determining and identifying specific features and observations about the site - such as its lack of comfortable seating areas or lingering spots - we went back to the studio to design an item that responded to these findings.

Day 3-The metal frame of the garment after being connected with welding
Posted 21 May 2015 13:59
Day 2
We created some quick models from our initial sketches to try and assess how any possible ideas might be used. We decided that something like in the image above would work well, enabling the user to wear the item as a cape, and then easy fold it out to form a seat/bed.
Posted 21 May 2015 13:59
Day 4
After a morning of After Effects tutorials we had a lecture with the creative director of Dogs of Heaven, Michael Mayhew. He spoke briefly about his experiences of Hulme but mainly focused on furthering the discussions about our films.

Day 6
Day six was an easy going day as we completed the physical model the day before, in day six we started to complete the idea behind this whole model. So we added the people that we were trying to show they were a good community and they all had a good friendship with each other which the CPO has ruined because they had get separated and leave the place and go to another area to live in.

Day 2-During our time in the studio we started brainstorming ideas about our garment. The main idea was to provide oxygen in this privately owned public space. We searched for different masks and hats that would cover the face. We wanted to create something that could be worn but could be easily be carried so it wouldn't be a burden to anyone wearing it. At the end of the day we came up with this idea of a breathing mask that anyone could carry to "filter" its own air in order to avoid the dusty environment/air created by the two construction sites. The mask would be covered by a lightweight material and would have straps in order for the person wearing it to be able to carry it.

Posted 21 May 2015 13:14
Following the first 2 days we started having group sessions every day. One of the first concepts that we developed for the intervention was the restoration/installation of a roof. Its a restoration cause the roof would be a reflection of the original roof which used to be there. But its also an installation cause its not the exact reflection. We decided to adapt the original shape of it but add a design to it. This design was particularly interesting as it reflected what had happened when it was bombed. The concept was that, the original roof had trusses supporting it, but when it was bombed, the wooded trusses were destroyed and laid burnt on the ground. So we decided to do a quick experiment. We made a scissor truss, identical to the original one, broke it into pieces and dropped those pieces from the height of the roof at a 1:100 scale, repeating it for each truss. Thus, emerged an interesting pattern. We used this pattern to make gaps in the roof through which light would enter into a rather dark atmosphere inside the church.

Posted 21 May 2015 13:09
The first step taken was to cut the metal rods and then weld them in the desired shape. Continuing we wanted to use a fabric to cover the metal structure and used a transparent fabric to succeed this. Finally we added cotton on the top of the structure with plants which would bring oxygen to breathe for the visitor of the site.

[Day 6] Finalizing
On the last day before final presentation, we were visited by Ian Hunter, the owner of MERZ Barn. He was satisfied with the project we had, and we have seen some good work from the other subgroups, especially some nice viusals. After the presentation we have decided to make more interior perspectives.

Day 5 (Workshop)
In day five we started leaser cutting the pieces for the physical model and started to figure out how to put everything together as we have planned the day before. We also faced some problems with leaser cutting which was we ended up leaser cutting the wrong side of the piece of wood. When we overcome this problem then we started to think about the materials that we use for putting everything together and keep everything neat and clean. We also thought about using hinges to attach the four different parts which shows different types of buildings.

Day 11: Today is our final review day, each of the four groups had 10-15 minutes to present our design. This is one of the pages extracted from our presentation which explains our concept of the installation:
Playing with light and fragments suspended from the ceiling as a remembrance of the war.
Posted 21 May 2015 12:49
The site given for the P(R)UBLIC was Spinningfields. The brief given instructed building a wearable equipment to make a private space public. Thus we noticed the construction sites that brought polluted air into Spinningfields and decided that our scheme would be based on bringing your own air into the site.

Day 4
In day four we decided to complete our idea of creating a college showing different ideas on the same piece but we also thought that we should come up with a physical model that would show our response to the CPO site. We spent the whole morning thinking of a way to show the response and the afternoon getting everything ready such as the auto cad file etc.

Day 6 - In the workshop making the model, by laser cutting the proposed pillar structures and creating an inlay floor plan to be able to place our proposed installation within the Church model. We made a 1-100 and a 1-20 of the altar end of the Church to express the anchor point of the altar to encourage people towards this central point.
